Édouard Batiste was a French composer and organist born in Paris on 28 March 1820, and studied at the Imperial Conservatoire as a teenager, winning prizes in solfège, harmony and accompaniment, counterpoint and fugue, and organ. In 1840, he won the Prix de Rome together with François Bazin.[1]In 1842, he became the organist at Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs church in Paris, where he remained for 12 years, before becoming organist at Saint-Eustache Church. While at Saint-Eustache, he performed the organ in the premiere of Hector Berlioz's Te Deum in April 1855, conducted by the composer.[1] He died in Paris on 9 November 1876. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768511). The Mass no. 2 in G major by Franz Schubert, D 167, was composed in 1815. This is the best known of the three shorter mass compositions which Schubert composed between the more elaborate first and fifth masses. In addition, the later Deutsche Messe or German Mass, D 872,and the ultimate sixth mass would be longer. The mass no. 2, commonly referred to as Schubert's Mass in G, was composed in less than a week (March 2 to 7, 1815), the year after his first mass had been successfully performed in Schubert's home parish.The second mass was originally more modestly scored than the first, requiring only a string orchestra and organ in addition to the soloists and choir. However, in the 1980s a set of parts for the mass were discovered at Klosterneuburg which are dated later than Schubert's full score.They not only include minor changes throughout the work, which would apparently represent Schubert's final intentions,they also include trumpet and timpani parts. Apart from some passages for the soprano soloist, the solistic interventions are very modest. Characteristically for Schubert, he is more interested in an overall devotional mood of a religious composition than in individualistic romantic text-expression. In this edition for women's voices, I use Schubert's first version for strings and organ which fits excellently to the sound of the women's choir.

Leyandder Trustworthy #6328059. Published by Leyandder Trustworthy (A0.1072158). Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is a popular piece of choral music. It was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. A transcription of Jesu was done by English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and was published in 1926 for solo piano. In 1934, Hess' version was adapted for piano duet. British organist Peter Hurford made a transcription of Jesu for organ. Today, Bach's piece is often performed at weddings and funerals. Bach wrote the piece for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's most enduring pieces of music.

Recorded as a 56-minute improvisation on 12/25/02, the music is thoughtful, somber, and quite elegant. There are actually thirteen pieces on the CD, but they segue into each other, making it difficult to tell where one song ends and another begins. This is very definitely NOT a problem, as the album unfolds naturally and organically, asking questions, looking inward, and expressing shock and grief. However, this is not music about only despair or rage. I also hear hope and determination as well as quiet reverence - the strange mix of emotions we all felt during those dark days. Titles include From Cradle to Coffin, Bravery, Numb, New York Skyline, and Truth. Isadar has a wonderful way of wearing his heart on his musical sleeve, pouring deep emotion and heartfelt expression into his music. The music was recorded in one take, but rather than meandering all over the place, Isadar used recurring themes that make the work cohesive and consistent enough to hold together even after many listens. This is a very strong and passionate work, but it was recorded with a rather quiet voice which allows it to be very comfortable and soothing background music as well as evocative solo piano music for concentrated and focused listening. The Purple Heart Sheet Music Collection is a note-for-note solo piano transcription of Isadar’s 2003 memorial CD by the same name (transcribed by David Shenton). The recording and book are a tribute to those who died in the attacks of 9/11/2001. The music was recorded in one take and although there are thirteen titles, the pieces segue into each other, creating a seamless 56-minute improvisation. The book indicates where the various pieces begin and end, but can also be played as one long piece. Although the theme of the music is very somber and bleak, the music covers the broad range of emotions we all felt during that period - anger, sadness, hope, determination, resolve, fear, grief, etc. Although the recording is an improvisation, Isadar incorporates a recurring theme that holds the work together as a single entity. Some pieces are very slow while others are lively and even fast. All thirteen pieces are in C minor/Eb major, but the variety of moods and tempos keep the music evolving without becoming repetitious. When the recurring theme pops up, it’s like seeing an old friend!The difficulty in playing someone’s improvisation is that the creation of the music was spontaneous and free-flowing. It isn’t easy to read an improvisation and give the music that quality of freedom. Less advanced pianists might find this frustrating. The time signatures change frequently, but a competent pianist will have no trouble with that. As I was playing this book, I sensed that I was looking directly into Isadar’s heart and feeling what he was feeling as the music was being born - a very powerful experience! Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, featuring today's biggest names in solo piano music.

Entropy is a series of anti-climactic etudes for solo piano. Movement I, which is about three minutes in length, features technical extremes, a wide range of timbres, and descending odd time signatures that provide a sense of gradual disorganization. The main theme is a simple step-wise melody that is repeated within a vast number of keys, and often in the inner voices of modern harmonies. After a meandering bridge that disregards the barlines, the theme returns in a terrifying climax, only to be quickly shattered by dissonance and flung lifelessly to the deep end of the instrument.

The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. You can see and hear the music for most of these contemporary arrangements on Sheet Music Plus and some also on YouTube.
