Prelude 20 in F# Minor Aolian from 24 Preludes for the Piano in Major and Minor Modes by composer Brian Golden  The creative concept in writing these preludes is to provide a link to past preludes written for the keyboard, and in particular to the works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.

Lagos Music #847828. Published by Lagos Music (A0.1254257). The third movement is done! Plenty of crunchy diminished and augmented fifth intervals in this work to give it some darkness. I also chose to keep the register fairly low. The feeling I'm trying to capture: despair; knowing that everyone's fate is to fade into the wind and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's nothing wrong with that; I've come to a place where I no longer fear death, but it's a reality of life that, at times, is impossible to ignore. There is a positive side, though. For one, the contrasting section is in A flat major and picks up tempo briefly! Before inevitably falling back into F minor... Also, on a funny note, the entire main theme is based off of an old song I wrote for my high school rock band (in like, 2004-ish?), using a commonly used chord progression: I, VI, iv, V7. This was when I was first learning to write music but I remember always thinking it would sound good as a funeral march. The song was called One More Life and the lyrics were about shedding the old, beginning anew, asking the universe for one more life. It feels good to finally have written this movement, though. The sun returns and you continue on feeling peaceful and contented once again.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This sonata is in the style of Ludwig von Beethoven, whom this composer has studied and greatly admires.The audio sample is taken from Movement 3: The end of variation 2, all of variation 3 (rock), and the beginning of variation 4 (rag). Movement 1 This is the result of my experimenting with the first movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata no. 23 op. 57. The Beethoven sonata’s overarching tonality based on F minor evokes a mood of darkness and despair. I used the time signature 4-4 instead of Beethoven’s 12-8, and my sonata introduces a new set of themes and motifs with tonality F major. These modifications posed interesting problems in figuration and modulation and changed the mood of the piece. Movement 2 This is a slow movement that might be characterized as minimalistic. The player should accentuate the right-hand octaves corresponding to the gradually unfolding melody. Movement 3 This is a theme with five variations, among which are rock, rag, and swing.

This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. My Ballade in F minor remains one of my largest works for piano in terms of scope. A single theme dominates the work in a Romantic style which returns throughout the work amid other sub themes that bolster the piece and heighten the Romantic flair I tried to capture throughout. The work is a 13 pages in length and around 9-10mins in performance. All directions on the score are in standard Italian but I leave the pedaling open to the performer's interpretation, it is however a rather heavy work so do not worry about over indulging in the sustain pedal. I give no metronome marks as I believe strongly in the artistic licence one can take with the Italian directions, also that if one follows them well enough that they will be more than adequate.

This is the original version of the beloved 15 2-Part Inventions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Inventions is a collection of short pieces Bach wrote for the musical education of his young pupils. These are among the finest examples of artistic gems ever written for this purpose, and probably because of this, they became very popular among Bach's pupils and others ever since they were written. The work comprises fifteen two-part, each named 'inventio', and fifteen three-part pieces, named 'sinfonia'. These two groups of pieces are arranged in an identical fashion-in ascending order by key-so that there is little doubt that Bach's intention was to bring them together as a single work. This is also confirmed by the way they are carefully written in his autograph fair copy penned in 1723. On every facing page of an open volume each piece demonstrates the contrapuntal technique, while, at the same time, explores a wide range of musical expressions using various styles and developing the motives in a logical fashion.
