The piece is a reduction of a big band chart that I wrote, but is self contained in this version. Great angular melody with introduction, 2 themes and development. 5 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improvise over. I used it in church for a prelude and it was well received with a jamming drummer. Fun Stuff.

This fast angular piano piece (1 min. 5 sec) is the tenth in a series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the soundtracks of early 90s video game systems like Nintendo. This composition captures the robotic, computerized quality that was common with many of the 8-bit soundtracks. Although composers were limited to writing thin textures, they often took advantage of the computer's ability to play virtuosic passages that would be nearly unimaginable for a living performer. The texture of this piece is almost entirely monophonic. The velocity of the 16th notes creates the impression of harmony in the same way virtuosic blue-grass flat-picking guitarist can. The greatest challenge to the performer is getting the alternating hands coordinated. Fingerings are important, but more so is deciding which hand to play specific melodic passages. Where these spots seemed most precarious, I provided suggestions. If Franz Liszt composed a Bagatelle without tonality, why not a milonga without tonality. This piece is placed somewhere between classical music and new tango. Moderator Louis Barabbas wrote about Ausente for the BBC blog Fresh On The Net nr. 305 (19 November 2018), http://freshonthenet.co.uk/2018/11/faves305 Described as 'somewhere between classical music and new tango' the artist’s phrasing here is telling: somewhere rather than something. For in Juan Maria Solare’s Ausente (absent) we are certainly transported. Each angular phrase jutting up like stone columns or distended stalactites in a limey cave. The trickling thrust of its furtive intent feels somehow elemental yet focused through an urban noir prism, drops of heavy water in varying temperatures, some icicles and some steam, shards of smoky light poking around slow moving fan blades and between the rusty teeth of ancient window grills, monstrous warped shadows cast up from humble orphaned minutiae. Music as beautiful and unsettling as it is hard to dance to. The idea of dancing this piece was a surprise for me, since tango music doesn't need to be danced to (you can also just listen to it). But if you wonder how this tango would appear danced, imagine it is not called tango but contemporary ballet rooted in tango - and suddenly you find ways of dancing it... provided an open-minded choreographer is on board! If someone wants to dance this music in the style of the tango of 1920, they will have a hard time. M.H. DuncanMartha Hill Duncan’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?†His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in hisparents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union named Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan†in honor of his contributions to planetary dynamics.

A challenging yet accessible piano piece that is interesting and very rhythmic. Don’t let all of the meters scare you - it is easier to figure out than you’d think at first glance! The third movement - Over-Caffeinated - starts with a tri-tone, just because it sounds interesting and a bit jarring. The Right and Left hands argue for quite a while, tossing the same little angular melody back and forth, even getting stuck together at one point like two dragonflies in late summer [see measures 147 and following.] It all ends in a major blowout, complete with references to the first two movements, get big and boisterous, and then the final surprisingly pleasant C major chord is followed by the right hand, which JUST has to get in the last word. Howard (A0.998749). Prelude to 1984 derives much of its musical material from the numbers 1, 9, 8 and 4. The piece is designed literally as a 'Prelude' to the first chapter of George Orwell's novel, from which it derives its programmatic detail. In a dictatorship that holds complete control over people, 'big brother' surveillance cameras watch over everyone. The main character, Winston Smith, is determined to escape this totalitarian society and find freedom. Stylistically, the piece uses a stark, angular, post-tonal idiom in order to reflect the aforementioned subject matter. However, the work remains accessible for the listener and is appropriate for higher-level pianists, including advanced students and professional players.
