Pietro Mascagni’s (1863—1945) Intermezzo Sinfonico from his opera Cavalleria Rusticana needs no presentation. The idea of this edition comes from an update to an arrangement created for a friend’s wedding in 2010. While arranging, I stumbled upon the composer’s autograph of this Intermezzo, for piano solo, and decided to add a modern engraving of it to the mix. Finally, an orchestral score and a full set of parts have been included to close the circle.There are, therefore, three versions of this piece: ASE 0055: for piano solo, based on the composer’s autograph from 1888. ASE 0057: arrangement for cello ensemble (min. 8 cellos), based on the piano part and not on the orchestral version, which differs greatly in dynamics and agogic marking ASE 0058: original orchestration, score and parts This edition’s piano solo and original orchestration versions inaugurate a new series dedicated to Italian composers and/or to composers who thought about Italy while writing their music. An arrangement of The End Of The World, a song covered by many famous artists. includingThe Carpenters; thanks to the phenomenal singing of Karen Carpenter. The End of the World was written by composer Arthur Kent and lyricist Sylvia Dee, who often worked as a team.The Carpenters (officially known as Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (born 1946). They produced a distinctive soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's harmonizing, arranging, and composition skills. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 10 albums along with many singles and several television specials. Karen possessed a powerful singing voice, and close miking brought out many nuances in her performances. Richard arranged their music to take advantage of this, though Karen had a three-octave vocal range. Richard's work with Karen was influenced by the music of Les Paul, whose overdubbing of the voice of wife and musical partner Mary Ford allowed her to be used as both the lead and harmony vocals.[6] By multi-tracking, Richard was able to use Karen and himself for the harmonies to back Karen's lead. The overdubbed background harmonies were distinctive to the Carpenters, but it was the soulful, engaging sound of Karen's lead voice that made them so recognizable. Record executive Mike Curb said it was Karen's voice that took the Carpenters above straight pop music into pop rock.  She was known as a one take wonder and could deliver a strong performance on the first attempt.Richard Carpenter was the creative force behind the Carpenters' sound. Ballet des Coqs, or Rooster Dance, is from a collection called Terpsichore, which is a compendium of more than 300 instrumental dances published in 1612 by the German composer Michael Praetorius. In his introduction, Praetorius takes credit for arranging the music rather than composing the tunes.The collection is based on French dance repertoire of the time and contains some notes that relate to instrumentation. However, Praetorius does not specify which instruments should play particular parts. This was one of my favourite Praetorius pieces, and so I transcribed it in order that it might be played at the keyboard without having to read the original publication with its five parts, varied clefs and difficult notation.

I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas†for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.

Test Drive from How to Train Your DragonComposers John James Powell and Michael John Mollo wrote this soaring piece for the soundtrack from the movie How To Train Your Dragon. You know the moment when Hiccup is training his new dragon Toothless and they go soaring through the skies for the first time--this is the melody that plays in the background! I wrote this arrangement for one of my students, Nicole D. Whenever we are searching for recital pieces or fun music to learn, we usually turn to animated movies. (Maybe because I have been told by some of my students that my taste in music is old--but I got tired of getting blank stares when I suggest some titles of the music I listen to!) At least we can connect on film music--especially animated film music! Nicole is the one that suggested this song--I had watched the movie a couple of times, but never really listened closely to the soundtrack, except to know that I liked it. She was my guinea pig while I was arranging the song and I am thankful for her feedback and suggestions for different parts of the music. This piece is ideal as a recital piece or as a fun piece to learn and perform (maybe a summer project!). The piece is arranged for Early Intermediate players and will challenge them with fingering passages, chord accompaniment that requires a stretch of an octave, and expressive playing.
