Its dark cerebral character is accomplished through lush, sometimes dissonant, sonorities, heavy use of sustain pedal, and a subdued dynamic level through most of the composition. It's most distinguishing feature is also its greatest performance challenge: a primary melody in the tenor or highest left-hand voice. Care must be taken to bring out the melody while taming the competing voices elsewhere. More rubato should be used than what the playback recording can demonstrate. Published by Samuel Wellman (A0.882108). This work, written in 1994, was one of my first parodies. Taking another composer's piece and 'messing it up', so to speak, became an important preoccupation for me. Clementi (Op. 36 No. 1) obviously is the victim here, and you can easily follow the original throughout. In the first movement I added a dissonant left hand part, and the result is basically bitonal, with a few quotes added from other famous tunes. In the second movement the material is moved up two octaves to imitate a music box and, just as would happen to a real wind-up music box, the tempo gets slower and slower until......oh no! The final dominant seventh doesn't resolve! Anarchy! Finally, the last movement stays completely faithful to the original, except that every measure is transposed to a different key. It's a great ear-bender, and as Mozart says in the movie Amadeus, It's so new! And the title, 'Snotty Tina,' is a corruption of 'Sonatina.'

This is the eleventh piano piece (2 min. 20 sec.) in the series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely the themes from early 90s game systems like Nintendo. Its A-section has a dark brooding character which has much to do with the highly unstable and dissonant Locrian mode in which it is written. This contrasts greatly with the triumphant and lyrical B-section which is predominantly written in the bright Lydian mode.Some performers will be initially challenged by the key signature of 6-flats. However, the repetitive nature of the left-hand ostinato will mitigate this challenge somewhat. Its use of exotic harmony (chromatic mediants, slash-chords, upper extensions) creates a rich, dark palate over which a haunting melody sings. On the first page, the performer must sometimes grab notes with the LH thumb in chords that appear to be played by the RH. The student must also take care on the second page to observe the cross-overs with the left-hand. The effect is of have three hands at the piano. Pedal is used throughout. The amount of less-conventional roles between hands makes this piece good technique-building repertoire. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q22575). Arrangements for the piano, transcriptions and opera paraphrases take up a large part in Franz Liszt's complete œuvre. He even arranged scenes from the music dramas of Richard Wagner. The transcription of 'Lied an den Abendstern' comes from the third act of the romantic opera Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg. In his transcription of 1849 Liszt kept exactly to Wagner's original but he divided the scene into 'Recitative' and 'Romance'. He transposed the piece to the keys of G sharp minor and A flat major, which sound warmer on the piano and which also allow for a more easy-to-play romantic piano setting. Liszt uses the cantilena of the violoncellos in Wagner's original as tonal highlight with octaves in the descant. A transcription that is beautiful to listen to for both pianist and audience and perfectly suitable for concert performances and recitals.

This fast angular piano piece (1 min. 5 sec) is the tenth in a series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the soundtracks of early 90s video game systems like Nintendo. This composition captures the robotic, computerized quality that was common with many of the 8-bit soundtracks. Although composers were limited to writing thin textures, they often took advantage of the computer's ability to play virtuosic passages that would be nearly unimaginable for a living performer. The texture of this piece is almost entirely monophonic. The velocity of the 16th notes creates the impression of harmony in the same way virtuosic blue-grass flat-picking guitarist can. The greatest challenge to the performer is getting the alternating hands coordinated. Fingerings are important, but more so is deciding which hand to play specific melodic passages. Where these spots seemed most precarious, I provided suggestions.
