Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998879). The Fragment series of short piano pieces was conceived for pianists of almost any standard. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment VI is the final piece in this six-movement piano cycle (though Fragments may be performed separately). The work's main middle section bears some similarity in tone and mood to the first piece in the cycle, Fragment I. Fragment VI is slightly more technically challenging than the previous movements. It has an arch form whereby the two, slow, initial introductory sections return in reverse order as the conclusion. The extended centrepiece section cumulatively builds in texture, dynamics, and tension, and is a set of modal variations over a 4-bar descending ground bass. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. In his book Impressionism, author Pierre Courthion writes how Ravel's Mother Goose Suite seems like a musical commentary to Monet's Waterlilies. Len has titled his transcription - Reflections - containing the main movements from Mother Goose (Ma Mère l’Oye), with beautifully crafted segue's that create uninterrupted flow from movement to movement. Ravel originally wrote this ballet as a charming, delicate and imaginative suite of fairytale pieces. This transcription is a continuous work featuring - (i) the Prelude, (ii) Pavane de la Belle au Bois dormant (Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty), (iii) Les entretiens de la Belle et de la Bête (Conversation of Beauty and the Beast), (iv) Petit Poucet (Little Tom Thumb), and Le jardin féerique (The Fairy Garden). It is suitable for the more advanced (ABRSM grade 6/7) pianist, but will be appreciated by all lovers of Ravel, and Ma Mère l’Oye in particular. The music contains some larger chords so not entirely suitable for small hands. This is an extended work - 8 pages of music.

Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes1. Réminiscences d’EspagneThis work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2. Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3. Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4. Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. À la manière d'une PavaneÀ la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. It combines Baroque-reminiscent polyphony with the clarity and delicacy of articulation required more widely in the Ravel repertoire.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1149736). Cupid's Home is a piano solo arrangement of the 1898 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. I have freely arranged this into a pulsing light jazz piece with an Intro, three sections, and a Coda; which each build in volume and rhythmic intensity. The Intro is straight from the Jacobs-Bond piece; it is the only part of the song that is. For section 1 I rhythmically augment (double the note values) of the melody and add a pulsing drone beat in the LH. In section 2 I double time the melody and syncopate it, then reharmonize it, and add harmonic movement to the still pulsing bass line. Section 3 adds syncopation and stride to the LH. The Coda is an extended riff and cadence. Pure fun! 4 page score; 1:55 minutes This piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.
