The words are included so the performer can meditate on the text while playing. The first verse begins reflectively with a single-note melody and LH broken chord pattern. Savior, like a shepherd lead us; Much we need Thy tender care. After a simple modulation, it moves to the second hymn, The Lord's My Shepherd. It builds up to a second verse of this hymn in a new key with triplet LH arpeggios.With exuberance, the arrangement reaches a climax with a final verse of Savior, Like a Shepherd. (An easier alternate version of the RH arpeggios is included.) It ends piano in a similar style to the beginning. The arranger is an active church musician. Most of you might know it from the classic movie The Wizard Of Oz, for which it was actually composed (and sung by Judy Garland).I love everything about this song, it’s melody (which is so cleverly based on a descending diatonic stepwise motion during the [A] section), the harmony, and of course the lyrics that inspire us to believe there might actually be more to life than what we are experiencing day in and day out, well worth dreaming about and searching for.ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF LYRICSTo me it is important to study the lyrics of a song before I start arranging it. Sin embargo, entendí que estas Profecías Mayas, más allá de predicar destrucción, enunciaban el inicio de un mundo nuevo, uno que todos nosotros debemos construir. Me inspiré en el tema y decidí escribir 31 composiciones, una por cada día del mes de diciembre —práctica que desde entonces mantengo, siendo el pasado diciembre mi 11o año consecutivo. Ahora, en 2024, el equipo de la Fundación Copistas Acuario —presidida por mi amigo y discípulo Samuel Beethoven—, me honra con la siguiente edición de composiciones para piano, luego de haber también publicado mi libro «A ti Estudiante» en 2019. En cada una de las piezas se presenta una propuesta distinta y diferenciada. Cada título es alusivo al día correspondiente según los almanaques y muchas veces en conexión con la numerología. Es un libro interesante para estudiarlo y ampliar el repertorio, pero que sobre todo busca elevar la capacidad interpretativa. Siempre he tratado de enviar un mensaje de vida a través de mi música y en esta obra, además, quise expresar la fascinación y el asombro que este pueblo antiguo y misterioso me causa. Se dice que este pueblo desapareció, pues decían venir de las estrellas, específicamente de las Pléyades; tal vez regresaron a su origen cósmico de la misma manera en que vinieron. ¡Embárquemonos, pues, nosotros también en este fascinante viaje musical que hoy presentamos ante ustedes! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In 2012, there was a lot of talk about the Mayan calendar and an interpretation that caused a great impact worldwide for its fatalistic omens. However, I understood that these Mayan Prophecies, beyond preaching destruction, enunciated the beginning of a new world, one that all of us must build. I was inspired by the theme and decided to write 31 compositions, one for each day of the month of December —a practice I have maintained ever since, this past December being my 11th consecutive year. Now, in 2024, the team of the Fundación Copistas Acuario —chaired by my friend and disciple Samuel Beethoven,— honors me with the next edition of piano compositions, after having also published my book “A ti Estudiante” in 2019. Each of the pieces presents a distinct and different proposal. Each title is allusive to the corresponding day according to the almanacs and often in connection with numerology. It is an interesting book to study and expand the repertoire, but above all it seeks to raise the interpretative capacity. I have always tried to send a message of life through my music, and in this work I also wanted to express the fascination and amazement that this ancient and mysterious people cause me. It is said that this people disappeared, given they claimed to come from the stars, specifically from the Pleiades; perhaps they returned to their cosmic origin in the same way they came. Let us, then, also be embarked in this fascinating musical journey that we present to you today!

This piece is one of an album of my contemporary classical compositions. Yes, I too wince at offering you something saddled with this oxymoron--contemporary classical--but this phrase is now an irresistible, commercially recognized category defying any principled protest from the ranks of wounded musicological curmudgeons like me. The style here employs a tonal palette that celebrates the more or less common practice of composers from J. S. Bach to Ravel, Prokofiev, and the 20th century American songbook. You will see that I reject Arnold Schoenberg's assertion that by 1910 tonality had exhausted itself, and needed to be reinvented according to an aesthetics that dismiss our scales and harmonies as purely arbitrary human conventions with no basis in nature. On the contrary, I believe that we are endowed by our nature to respond emotionally to our traditional materials of music in the same way as nature equips us to respond to the taste of food and drink. We differ in our taste for savory, sweet, and sour, but it is wrong to say that our very capacity to taste is a merely cultural convention. There is biology, and then physics too! By the same standard, it can't be true that one person's taste for arsenic is as valid as another's taste for beer or kumquats. The major triad is a force of nature, like the sun, wind, and rain! I also like big fat juicy 13 chords, and contrapuntal weaving of melody! I believe the purpose of music is to sway us emotionally, and if it can uplift us too, so much the better! While I am not ashamed to write a bare triad, unadorned by chromatic alterations (much less by clusters of chord collisions) I have nevertheless employed much complicated harmony. Moreover, some passages are written in a spiky harmony that might be analyzed as bitonal, as at the meno mosso section, beginning at measure 112, where the mood I wanted to set inspired me to write the theme in C minor while the left hand climbs up from the bottom of the keyboard in a widely spaced, D-flat 13 arpeggio. I have composed these pieces with the skills of intermediate to early-advanced pianists in mind. This piece demands the ability to play some counterpoint between two voices in one hand. There is a section that requires one to play moderately fast octaves, but nothing as difficult as the G minor Prelude of Chopin (to say nothing of his harrowing octave Etude from Opus 25!) While there are many polyrhythmic passages, none is more complicated than two-against-three notes. All said, there is nothing here to make your hands (or, I dare say, your ears) bleed. The performing time is around nine minutes and a breath or three.
