Published by Edgars Samorodovs (A0.1033148). This piece portrays one miraculous day out in nature with the weather, as well as the tunes and moods changing constantly. Here I used every piano register to create contrasts. It begins with the sun rising over the horizon with piano tremolo in a high register almost as a dew dripping from the grass, impressionistic melody in the middle register, and more forceful intervals in the lower register as a sign, that something majestic awaits. The next part is an innocent, lightsome fugue with baroque elements, that ends on a minor scale, creating suspense and uncertainty. After a little melancholic section in Largo (slow tempo), the storm has finally started. Thunder - Dramatic octaves in the lower register with glimpses of melody from the intro turn into a tempestuous dance with arpeggios in the left hand and somewhat sweet melody in the right hand. The last section is a calm after the storm. Little raindrops falling from the roofs in the upper register create the melody from the intro as if reminiscing of how joyful was the beginning of the day. The piece finishes with a feeling of unfulfillment and expectation of what surprises the new day will bring.

Ascher and Paul Williams.Most people hear the intro of this piece and immediately think of Kermit the Frog, strumming his banjo and singing this beautiful little melody. It is one of the very first sheets of music that I went out and purchased at our local music store. I was so excited to learn it! Fast forward many years later (ahem!) and I am so happy to see it entertaining a whole new generation of people. On YouTube, Kermit uploaded a special performance of it in April 2020!I performed it as a duet with a student at a recital and it was a big hit (we even came up with our own choreography to go along with the piece!) This melody is one of those timeless and iconic pieces that will forever live in my heart. I was excited to see that I would be able to share an arrangement I made!My version starts out in the key of A major and offers a simple, more pianistic left hand accompaniment. Smooth, flowing arpeggios accompany most of the piece. The first verse is left to be fairly simple and lets the melody shine. The second verse has more harmony in the right hand and some fills that build on the melody. The key change has more movement and signals the last verse done in a very full, orchestra-like sound. Test Drive from How to Train Your DragonComposers John James Powell and Michael John Mollo wrote this soaring piece for the soundtrack from the movie How To Train Your Dragon. You know the moment when Hiccup is training his new dragon Toothless and they go soaring through the skies for the first time--this is the melody that plays in the background! I wrote this arrangement for one of my students, Nicole D. Whenever we are searching for recital pieces or fun music to learn, we usually turn to animated movies. (Maybe because I have been told by some of my students that my taste in music is old--but I got tired of getting blank stares when I suggest some titles of the music I listen to!) At least we can connect on film music--especially animated film music! Nicole is the one that suggested this song--I had watched the movie a couple of times, but never really listened closely to the soundtrack, except to know that I liked it. She was my guinea pig while I was arranging the song and I am thankful for her feedback and suggestions for different parts of the music. This piece is ideal as a recital piece or as a fun piece to learn and perform (maybe a summer project!). The piece is arranged for Early Intermediate players and will challenge them with fingering passages, chord accompaniment that requires a stretch of an octave, and expressive playing. Tune: RESIGNATIONUse: Prelude, Offertory, PostludeA couple of years ago I read an interview with director Ridley Scott about his first commercially successful film, Alien. It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

While out on a winter’s walk one evening, I was thinking through the lovely It Came upon the Midnight Clear, and without any warning, Chopin’s exquisite Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 9, No. 2 kind of crept in and curled itself around the Midnight melody and made itself at home. The result is this gentle mashup of these two beauties in a piano solo.Most of us do not have tons of time to practice, but the original Chopin left hand chords and leaps are daunting, so I have modified the bass notes without losing the composer’s harmonic intentions. Also the original time signature of 12/16 has been changed to 6/8, a more familiar friend and is compatible with It Came upon the Midnight Clear. There are some suggested fingerings in a few places. Use pedal at your trained ear’s discretion.I played this piece as a Prelude for our church Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, and the mood that it set was heavenly. It uses fewer repeated sixteenths than the Liszt arrangement uses, which eases wrist strain. It also has fingering added, and more of the modern pianistic embellishments and flourishes. I (Ken Young) have learned to play my arrangement over the last 8 months, and it's now an important addition to my repertoire. I'll add a YouTube link of my performing it within the next year.
