La presente publicación de la tanda de valses «Pita», del reconocido compositor dominicano José De Jesús Ravelo, se basa en la primera edición de la obra realizada en 1897 con el estampado musical diseñado en Leipzig por C. G. Röder. Esta colección de valses está dedicada a la entonces enamorada del compositor, la Srta. Josefa de la Fuente, conocida como “Pepita”, con quien contraería matrimonio en 1902. Además, está documentada la intención del compositor de recaudar fondos con la edición de esta obra y destinarlos al proyecto del Parque Independencia en Santo Domingo. De ahí la inscripción «mi ofrenda al Parque ‘Independencia’» en la portada, la cual hemos decidido recrear como homenaje, incluyendo también una reinterpretación de la ilustración original alegórica a la independencia dominicana. Por lo tanto, además de ser una de las primeras ediciones impresas conocidas de música dominicana, la tanda de valses «Pita» se circunscribe también a la historia del desarrollo y expansión de nuestra ciudad capital, ligada al proceso de construcción de uno de sus puntos de referencia más importantes. Agradecemos la iniciativa de la Fundación Copistas Acuario por reeditar esta obra como resultado de su continua labor de rescate del patrimonio musical nacional. Ahora sí, adentrémonos en esta historia de un joven Ravelo enamorado y emocionémonos junto a él con la música que inspiró su amor. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The present publication of the “Pita” waltz suite, by the renowned Dominican composer José De Jesús Ravelo, is based on the first edition of the work made in 1897 with the musical print designed in Leipzig by C. G. Röder. This collection of waltzes is dedicated to the composer’s then fiancée, Miss Josefa de la Fuente, known as “Pepita”, whom he would marry in 1902. In addition, it is documented the composer’s intention to raise funds with the edition of this work and allocate them to the project of the Independencia Park in Santo Domingo. Hence the inscription “mi ofrenda al Parque ‘Independencia’” on the cover, which we have decided to recreate as a tribute, also including a reinterpretation of the original illustration allegorical to the Dominican independence. Therefore, in addition to being one of the first known printed editions of Dominican music, the “Pita” waltz suite is also circumscribed to the history of the development and expansion of our capital city, linked to the process of construction of one of its most important landmarks. The editor Robert Teichmuller (1863-1939) was a student of Carl Reinecke and worked as a pianist and professor for piano at the Leipzig Academy of Music Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (at that time Royal Conservatory and from 1924 State Conservatory of Music in Leipzig). Among his students were great names such as Gunther Ramin, Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Rudolf Mauersberger. The publication of his instructive editions on Mozart's and Reger's piano works testifies to his esteem in musical life at the beginning of the 20th century.With the new printing of Mozart's piano sonatas, Breitkopf & Hartel offers an insight into the performance practice of around 1900. Since Teichmuller took the musical text of the Urtext edition (Breitkopf & Hartel) and the then current Mozart Complete Edition as a basis marking all his additions, this edition is interesting for pianists not only for educational and interpretative, but also for historical reasons. In addition to fingerings and additional articulations, the musical text also contains examples of the execution of the numerous ornaments.

Niels Gade (1817-1890), who was born in Copenhagen and spent most of his life there, went to Leipzig in 1843 for further training on a royal scholarship. There he became friends with Robert Schumann and found an eager patron in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He is regarded as the most important figure of the Danish musical scene in the 19th century. His charming cycle 'Der Kinder Christabend' was published in 1859 with titles and texts in Danish. Although the first German edition was published in Leipzig in 1860, the English edition was not published in London until 1880. The volatile, the stable. The movement and the static. The flurries and the columns. The fragment of the poem (by Javier Adúriz) that heads this work underlines the impossibility – and the wish – of opposing the ephemeral, of contradicting transience. Technically, this musical work is based on a harmonic field of semitone + minor third + whole tone, which actually includes all intervals from semitone to tritone. I call this harmonic field 'modo Verdi' in my notes, because he uses it (as scala enigmatica) in his Quattro Pezzi Sacri. Although it is conceived for toy piano, I do not object to this work being played on other keyboard instruments, nor to its being adapted for various instrumental duets. Evaporación detenida (Stopped evaporation or Evaporation at standstill) was composed in Bremen on October 30, 2021 in the framework of an invitation by the US-American keyboardist David Bohn (a native of Wisconsin), to whom it is dedicated. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1335536). Hommage to Ursula is a piano piece in memory of Ursula Görsch (1932-2023). The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Both Pitch Class Sets are identical from an intervallic perspective - transposed by a tritone. Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. A transcription of Jesu was done by English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and was published in 1926 for solo piano. In 1934, Hess' version was adapted for piano duet. British organist Peter Hurford made a transcription of Jesu for organ. Today, Bach's piece is often performed at weddings and funerals. Bach wrote the piece for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's most enduring pieces of music.

Julius Schulhoff grew up as the son of wealthy Jewish parents in Prague, where he received piano and music theory lessons. Following his first performances in Dresden and Leipzig, he moved to Paris in the mid-1840s and was active there as a virtuoso pianist. Chopin is said to have shaken his hand after a performance, saying: ‘Vous êtes un vrai artiste, un collègue.’ (You are a true artist, a colleague.) Concert tours in England, Spain and Russia followed. However, over time, he gave up his career as a soloist and devoted himself entirely to teaching and composing, first in Paris, from 1870 in Dresden, later in Berlin, where he was appointed Professor a year before his death. His virtuoso salon music for piano includes a large sonata, studies, caprices, impromptus, nocturnes, waltzes and mazurkas. This short ‘album leaf’ was published by Schott in 1852 (plate number 12059).

The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) studied with Max Reger in Leipzig from 1908 to 1910 and on graduation won the Arthur Nikisch award. She valued Reger greatly and a life-long friendship ensued. A freelance composer, she continued to live in Oppenheim / Rhein. Her substantial oeuvre remains largely unpublished. The present volume introduces the most beautiful of J. Senfter's works for piano. Most of these pieces are available on the WERGO-CD WER 6264-2.
