I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas†for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.

A Minimalist piece, using a constant 16th note figure in the R.H. as the L.H. plays low in the bass clef and high in the treble, on beats One and Three. Two alternate fingerings are provided for the R.H. part, so that the player can vary it to avoid fatigue. Each repetition should have a change of the sustain pedal. The tune marches up and down the Bb major scale, with a chromatic F# providing minimal contrast in the middle of the piece. Each new melody tone is introduced along with the preceding one, as a dyad,and then the leading note plays alone, followed by the next new dyad, except for the lone color-tone F#, which is presented by itself. It concludes with a coda that has the upper L.H. note staying on F, whilst the lower one proceeds down to Bb, and One Note Beyond, to A. Each measure is repeated three times. Approx. duration 3 mins 15-30 secs. Typical Minimalist features, and Counting each measure's repetitions is essential!

Fur Elise has gotten a bit of a new lease on life in concert, as Valentina Lisitsa has played it as an encore on some high-profile concerts. The standard rendition of this piece is in 3/8 time, and uses a fair amount of R-L hand substitution on the melody. Our version is in 3/4, a more modern setting for a time signature, with fewer dots and flags, and uses NO hand-substitutions in that famous repeated half-step. Why bother, say the Technical Elves, behind the scenes. I agree, and thus, this setting is a straight-across figure for the RH only, with the upper final note as the sole LH kicker. Also, in much of Beethoven's music, there is a technical disconnect between some sections, openings being easy and later contrasting sections being an order of technical magnitude more difficult. So, the tempo reminder at the beginning of each section is meant to insure that the easy part does not go fast, and the hard part does not go slower. As your technical level rises, so can the pace of the whole piece, but not until then. Enjoy! MBB .

Mozart's music is often described as being hard to play because of its thinness, its transparency, and lightness of texture. he compensates for the lack of thunderous chords and bravura with melody, and Syncopation. This piece abounds in both, especially the latter. To further the readability of these L-R alternating syncopated figures, we have used a rhythm which has fewer rests, which reflects the performance style of Emil Gilels, the Russian pianist known for his golden sound. One of the ways he achieved that sound was frankly by playing through many rests in Mozart, Beethoven and other composers whose scores were the vehicles for his sound. Weird, but true. All the original rhythms have been doubled for better visual clarity. Our score has fewer 16th-rests and more stemmed-together notes.When the syncopation is unavoidable and required, we use detached 16ths similar to what a vocalist would find in an opera recitative. The cadenzas are written out in full-size notes, and fingered for logical harmonic and scalar groupings. The ornamentation is also written out, similar to what one might in a grayed-out ossia box from some commercial publishers. MBB.

Yet, there are only a handful, no pun intended, I guess! of reasonable arrangements for piano solo. The Kocsis setting has a TON of extra arpeggios, mostly derived from the orchestral treatment by the composer. My setting here takes the most economical and stylistically precise approach to integrating the original melody and accompaniment into a single musical expression. There are NO notes that are not directly on the page of the accomp or the tune. Notwithstanding,the piece is by no means a simple one, given its key, and the composer's penchant for borrowed chords. So, we have done our best to make the altered spellings both clear and still voice and key-relevant. A nice four-pages-facing layout for a single-sided printer. A modest tempo is presented, and the piece can go faster if you have the time to practice it enough! New edition has some changes to R-L hand distribution, and three editorial fixes. MBB .

Hexantanze of Edward MacDowell is a fine example of American program music, much in the vein of The Sorcerer's Apprentice of Paul Dukas. Augmented chords, chromatic scales, and a lively double-triple meter dance section in the middle. Not all of the piece sounds minor, as there is a major section that uses a half-diminished chord to morph its way back to the minor. Key of B minor. Mostly original notes, some L/R re-assignment, and a few truncated chords and leaps. Our tempo is conservative, but this piece can really fly, no broomstick pun intended... oh, well, ya got me, I DID mean that! Marta Argerich can really launch herself into this one. MBB .

The early editions, and many others since concentrate SO much on showing the voices and how long each note should LAST, that the important parts, which in our opinion, are when each note STARTS, and which hand plays it, are either left ambiguous or worse. So, here is an edition/arrangement, with 100% original notes, and precise L-R hand assignments. The French device of the laissez vibre or Tie to no where, is used throughout, for visual simplification. Since the piece is practically a sacred text, no notes have been changed. Period. What HAS been changed is the presentation, especially in the 2nd movement, which is also our audio sample here. The small note-values, the radical time signatures, the measures that often take up an ENTIRE line of commercially-printed music, and the decided lack of cautionary accidentals: all these elements have been pre-decoded, essentially. No more using a hand-lens to see if that mark is a slur or a tie, or both! No more straining to see what note is held over, while the new one strikes. Our setting here, which you can see in the sample, often takes each BEAT, and puts a barline there, along with a common time signature, 3/4, 6/8, 4/4, etc. No smaller fractions, and no vast forest of dots and flags. All the 2nd movement rhythms have been arithmetically expanded, while maintaining their relationships. All the ornamentation, with its hidden melody, has been written out.So, while this piece has not been made any easier to play, it HAS been made vastly easier to read. One might claim that it is now readable at all, whilst the original cannot be deciphered at sight without great mental and visual effort. Please, print this double-sided for best results, as the repeats are either on a single page, or are on facing pages in our formatting. Single-sided gives you that same control, if you wish.
