About the song and the arrangementThis is my solo piano arrangement of Let There Be Peace On Earth, one of the most powerful songs about peace ever written. I arranged it with the intermediate piano player in mind. Although is not particularly jazzy, it includes some jazz harmony and voicings. I think its beautiful melody benefits from clean voicings and an almost classical accompaniment style. Having said that, I included chord symbols so that jazz pianists can do their thing.I recommend to everyone who wants to learn it to also study the lyrics (who I didn't include with the sheet music, because it is after all a solo piano arrangement. Knowing the words will undoubtedly help with interpreting the music more adequately from an emotional point of view.About the technical aspects of this arrangementAlthough the arrangement sounds simple,  it poses several challenges. For example, it has a polyphonic element to it which requires the pianist to use the sustain pedal and make smart fingering choices. For this reason I included my suggestions for both. Please feel free to use your own.FeelThe arrangement is meant to be played very expressively. I suggest you vary the tempo and dynamics. Bringing out the melody is also very important.At last, I hope you will enjoy playing my arrangement and consider including it in your recitals. The call for peace is never a waste.

Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English Divine is beautiful and loves what is beautiful. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Our heartfelt prayer is that this music serves to awaken people of all religious traditions to the sacred musical treasures of Islam and that it contributes to interfaith harmony. CarolAnn Barrows & Taylor Kroff The Mevlidi Sherif, the finest expression of reverence for Muhammad (pbuh), forms an essential part in the religious instruction of most Turkish minds. We hope that this new symphony will foster an interest and understanding of the Muslim soul, even for many who have little direct contact with the world of Islam. Considering how Christians feel about their Christmas carols provides some understanding of what the Mevlidi Sherif (or mawlud) means to Muslims. Over 500 years ago Süleyman Çelebi, from the Great Mosque at Bursa, wrote the Mevlidi Sherif (then entitled Vesiletu’n-necat) so that Turks would have access to the magical, mystical story of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which had previously only been available in Arabic. Over the centuries this epic poem has been recited and sung in Mosques and in homes; on countless occasions of rejoicing and sorrow, such as births, weddings, house blessings, graduations, and especially to celebrate the Night of Power and the Birthday (mawlid) of Muhammad (pbuh). Some consider it to be the most frequently recited poem in the world. In 1942, as an act of interfaith and goodwill, Mr. F. Lyman MacCallum, a Christian missionary who was born in Turkey to missionary parents, translated into English this epic poem and published it in a journal dedicated to promoting East/West understanding. This was a remarkable artistic feat as MacCallum stayed true to the traditional Turkish poetic meter, mathnawī of fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilün, as well as holding fast to the authentic meaning of the original text. In 2015, Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, from Ankara University in Turkey, discovered MacCallum’s English translation of this most beloved poem. With the intention to help those in the west better understand the very heart of Islam, he invited sacred music singer, Ms. CarolAnn Barrows from Maui, Hawaii, USA to be the first person to ever sing the Mevlidi Sherif in English. He asked her to compose music that would appeal to western sensibilities. Ms. Barrows interviewed many composers to assist her. It wasn’t until she heard from Mr. Taylor Kroff from Austin, Texas, U.S.A., that she knew she’d found the right person for the task. Using digital technology they were able to work together, even though thousand of miles apart. They amended and re-translated the text of the original English version of the poem and composed the Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English. The recording is now available online all over the world. This music was born out of our desire to help non-Muslims appreciate the love all Muslims have for their Prophet Muhammad (pbuh); to create greater understanding and peace among nations. We are not suggesting that anyone change their faith, but rather that greater world peace will be achieved by understanding and accepting the faith of others. We pray that this music will serve to remove the boundaries which divide different religious faiths by bringing to full light the underlying wisdom with which they are all united. I have to admit that in the past, I have had a strong preference for Landon’s more composed music, but he is improvising and performing so much now that his spontaneous music is incredibly cohesive and complete and the emotional content is rich and sincere. Landon has performed house concerts in my series every year for the past seven years and while his music has always been exceptionally good, now it’s often breathtaking in its beauty and honesty. Nothing is held back, coming from the purest source of creativity. I’m blown away by the music on Healing Hearts and am certain that it will be the second of Landon’s albums on my Favorites list for 2014.Most of the tracks overflow with peace and serenity. In fact, Louis calls his home studio The Peace Palace and I can see why! A couple of pieces are a bit livelier, but the entire album is perfect for a warm and soothing background. However, be sure to treat your mind and soul to a blissful hour of calming music that can effortlessly heal the spirit and wash away the cares of the moment, the day, or life in general - at least for a while. All of the tracks are exceptional, but I’ll mention a few favorites. Amy’s Song is a breath of fresh air - graceful, tender and very warm. Gorgeous! Desert Peace is somewhat more ambient and so peaceful. I love the title track, which is more minor and a bit darker, but so poignant and compelling. Now or Never seems to be offering support and encouragement to move forward - gently but firmly. Sacred is almost hymn-like. The Great Unknown is dedicated to a young family member who passed away recently. Dark and sometimes painfully sad, there is hope as the healing process takes place - an amazing piece of music! The Painter expresses the passionate spirit that can flow from one artist to another. Unstoppable begins quietly and simply, gradually building energy, strength and power. Unstoppable, indeed! I love our new place, but it seems really strange to see Christmas decorations going up in December and green everywhere!! I thought I would get in the mood for holiday celebrations by sitting down and playing old Christmas favourites. Silent Night is one of those beautiful carols where the peace and spirit of the season just settle in your heart. As I sat and played, the arrangement formed itself in my mind and in my fingers. I worked backwards on this arrangement--normally I sit down with an outline of the music in mind and work from there. This time, I played the arrangement (luckily I was recording!) and then transcribed my own arrangement. It was a new and interesting way to work and fun to dive into my mind and finger wanderings! This arrangement explores some different harmonies in the intro and the outro. The verse and chorus are repeated four times in this arrangement. The first time sticks pretty close to the original, with some suspensions and interesting rhythms thrown in to keep it interesting. The second repetition introduces several countermelodies and different right hand harmonies. The third repetition is a sweet melody in the treble register of the piano. The fourth repetition is an improvisation based on the harmonic structure of the verse and chorus. I hope you enjoy this arrangement. To quote Wikipedia: Sweet Betsy from Pike is an American ballad about the trials of a pioneer named Betsy and her lover Ike who migrate from Pike County (Missouri?) to California. The cover art here is drawn by artist, Kaytha Coker Potts, whose image captures the imagined Betsy and Ike as they cross rivers, plains, and mountains on the way to California. The music for the various movements of Sweet Betsy, similarly, can be seen as musical pictures of this harrowing yet thrilling trip. Movement I pictures a joyful determination to make the trip, accompanied by energy enough to make the early struggles endurable. Movement II pictures rest and reflection. The evening comes when one thinks through the events of the day with peace and anticipation of continuing the journey tomorrow. Movement III paints the joy of the journey with the end in sight. High energy and much joy is found here.This sonatina was inspired by – and in many ways patterned after – Dmitri Kabalevsky’s Sonatina Op. 13, No. 1. The tune, Sweet Betsy, always in mind yet unstated, finally erupts three times in the center section, first in the left hand (in B Major), then a second time (in F Major) before appearing in the right hand (in C# Major) while accompanied (in B Major) in the left hand. The resulting conflicting tonalities are followed by a transitional sixteenth note run leading back to the first theme in b minor as the rondo plays out.

Near to our family home is an abandoned water mill called Dron Mill. All that remains today is the shell of a building, spaces where wheels and axles once stood, and a babbling burn which has been reclaimed by nature. In centuries past, this would have been a place of activity and prosperity. I imagined a miller living in this idyllic corner, concealed by the hillside. Maybe he and his wife danced in the garden. The Miller’s Waltz reflects the indescribable magic which some places possess. A poet in the 19th century also felt this magic when he/she wrote anonymously: At the fit o’ Balmanno, a whin-covered hill, Nestlin’ mang trees, there you’ll find the auld mill; If wi’ peace and contentment your mind you wad fill, Gae up to Dron Mill by the Ochils.
