You Raise Me Up - Advanced Piano Solo

This year, I am continuing to arrange songs that I consider to be important. In order to fit my criteria for arranging, I look for pieces that have stood the test of time, are uplifting, and can be used in many different situations. This one is a favourite of my Mom's so it went on my "To Do list" quite a while ago.
I decided to dedicate it to my Mom and Dad, for giving into my pleadings for music lessons and supporting me all these years.
The arrangement is written for an advanced player because the left hand can be quite challenging. There are many giant leaps and arpeggios all over the piano, including some challenging chord changes and full chords in the right hand. The piece starts in E flat major, but transitions to a F major finish. Each repetition of the melody is changed slightly--there is a challenging section near the end which brings out the melody in a thunderous full arrangement which is really fun to play. Rather than bringing everything to a crashing end though, I moved the melody into a sweet treble that signals a quiet, peaceful ending.

The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Anyway, thanks again for listening, hope you enjoyed it and there is much more to come!

This is my second piece that I have wrote for piano and in general. The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it. As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Anyway, thanks again for listening, hope you enjoyed it and there is much more to come!

Steve Boudreau #6681051. Published by Steve Boudreau (A0.1000329). The Bach Chorales are ultimate examples of melodies creating harmonies, the parts coming together to form a whole. They are also great examples of a musician taking a melody and making a new arrangement of it, like jazz musicians do today. This piece is a combination of two chorale melodies that Bach arranged, originally based on hymns by 16th-century composer Paul Eber. For context, Bach set the melody around 200 years after it was written, and I re-worked the melodies with my own harmonies nearly 300 years after that.The first job I had when I moved back to Ottawa from Boston was as a church pianist. At one point there was a two-month stretch where I was in charge of programming the instrumental music we played, and I challenged myself to come up with new arrangements every week- the way Bach would have in his time, just on a much smaller scale. This was a terrific creative outpouring of music for me, and it renewed my enormous respect for the church music community and the work involved.For this piece I took two seemingly unrelated chorales (they are actually from the same Cantata, BWV 127) and attached them, using their distant keys of A Major and F Major to set up an interesting modulation halfway through. I had to actively try out some more modern harmonic progressions to take the overall sound of the piece further away from Bach's version. One of my favourite moments is when you finish the C major resolution and then repeat back into F# Minor at the top for improvising. In the solo piano version this surprising cut doesn't occur unless you take a second pass through the piece, so I encourage you to try repeating the piece even if you don't feel comfortable embellishing or changing anything the second time around.

I know you think that we all go through a stage where we are sad it’s true, but this is not the case. I thought that I just had a sad time too until I realized I had been thinking about killing myself many times. Love, Faith After an immediate trip to the doctor, it was discovered that Faith didn’t have clinical depression but that she suffered from a hormonal imbalance in her body. This is probably one of my favourite pieces, it really turned out how I wanted it to. The opening bars at the beginning of the piece introduce us to the style of the piece and provide short fragments of the motifs that are to come later in the piece. In bar 9, the main theme of the piece is introduced which is a arpeggiated open-voiced chord starting in the left hand followed by the right hand. That ope-voiced chord is one of my favourite chord voicings as it just has a beautiful airy sound and that’s what I wanted the focus of this piece to be.I wanted to change things up in the middle section as you can hear with the left that takes the melody and the right plays a chordal accompaniment. This is actually a little homage to a piece I learnt on the piano when I was younger, there was a section similar to this that I really liked the style and writing of so I decided to use it in this piece. One last thing, this piece was originally called ‘Cloudy Day’ and it was a standalone piece but I changed the name when I added it to this album to keep it one word like the other pieces.

It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

I especially like Nat King Cole's version, which is in Db major. To make it easier for intermediate piano players I wrote my piano solo arrangement in C major instead. It is still challenging  enough.The sheet music will be available for purchase at 2pm Chicago time on Nov 27.About The ArrangementThe arrangement is written in jazz ballade style. It doesn't swing. I includes a fun double time improvisation section though which I made up on the spot during the second B section when I recorded the song. It is in latin style. The arrangement can be performed with or without improvisation. Should you be a jazz pianist you could use the included chord symbols to make up your own improvisation.About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is the exact transcription of my recording, including the improvisation part. (You can listen to it and see me perform in the video below.)The sheet music contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. How This Arrangement Came AboutMay arrangement is heavily based on the Nat King Cole version. I love the ballade feel and the beautiful chord substitutions he uses in the orchestration. First I simply played along with his version in Db major. This helped me to figure out the harmony. Next I start thinking about the accompaniment. Now it is time to practice it. Once I have the arrangement figured out I start recording it a few times, listen to each version, iron out the edges. Now it is time to record the entire thing. Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. I always think about fingering and sustain pedal use at the same time when learning a song. Smart use of the sustain pedal can really make it much easier to play.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who loves The Christmas Song. It doesn't matter would kind of pianist you are. The arrangement is certainly for intermediate pianists and up. It is also beneficial when you don't have very small hands. Some chords in the left hand require a hand span of a 10th. However, there are ways to get around that by simply rolling the notes with the help of the sustain pedal.

Hanon Piano / Keyboard Exercises 1 - 30Condensed and Simplified for Beginners Easy ReadingIn this short book you will find condensed and simplified versions of the Hanon piano finger exercises 1 - 30 as well as the major, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales in every key (two octaves). What is Hanon? The ‘Hanon Virtuoso Pianist’ is a collection of piano finger exercises designed to give equal strength, agility and flexibility to all five fingers of both hands. Written by Charles-Louis Hanon sometime in the 1800s, these exercises without doubt have become one of the most widely used techniques by today’s pianists. In my opinion these are the best finger exercises available. One really great thing about these exercises is that they are applicable to both absolute beginners and advanced players alike, particularly as the reading ability required is minimal. Whatever your ability, these exercises will help improve your technique and finger strength. Having been written well over 100 years ago, the original work is now in the public domain and therefore digital copies can be acquired free of charge on the internet. However, most of these are very poor quality and the instructions are mainly in French or Russian - neither of which work too well for me! For the full version I personally recommend the ‘Alfred’ Edition edited by Allan Small which is clear and has instructions in English. So why do I need this book? The whole point is to make it easy to read and to reduce page turns - less is more! In the full version the first 30 exercises take up fifty pages whereas here there are three exercises per page for the first 20, then two per page for the next 10, reducing the fifty pages to just twelve. I initially produced this for my own use only but figured that others may like to take advantage of what I’ve done. Does this mean that the print is just smaller? No, not at all. If you are familiar with these exercises you will know that they are repeated patterns which ascend and descend for two octaves diatonically. To condense and simplify them and consequently eliminate an enormous amount of page turns I have shown: the all-important fingering on the first pattern (as per the original)then the repeated second patternthen ‘changeover’ patterns between ascending and descending - which are sometimes slightly differentthen finally the last pattern of each exercise which again is often very slightly different. I have also written them two octaves apart (for easy reading) and only shown them for one octave instead of two. In practice they should be played one octave apart and ultimately be practiced for two octaves. My mind returned to the good old days when I was free to daydream and do whatever it was that I wanted to do. When I was younger I had wanted to grow up to be a bird, a frog, an ant or a baby bee, but I had grown up to be a man, and now I had a wife and a baby son. Things were not the way I had imagined they would be. Now I had to go to work every day to pay the bills, and I didn't even like my job. It felt like I was bound in chains that were unbreakable. There seemed to be no way out, but there was a way out. All I had to do was accept that life had changed, that I had changed, and I needed to make the best of it. After making that decision life got better and better. I realized that the true plan for life was to create our own homes and families, and that sooner or later we will all return to our heavenly home. I love being home, and at the homes of my siblings, friends, and parents. Home is not really a physical place so much as it is where we are surrounded by people who love us. For me, being home is being where I am loved and accepted.
