One of the famous rags recorded on piano roll by Joplin in 1902.This arrangement has been made simpler to allow more pianists to have a go at this great rag.The main change was to convert it to 4/4 instead of the (2/4 common two-step time signature for rags). The main reason is for easy of reading- and maybe easier on the eye to comprehendI have taken out nearly all of the large stretches and limited the harmony parts to what is essential and nothing more. There are no big leaps or complex rhythms. It is 4 pages long and 4 mins 30 in length. The youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability.I have set it for intermediate player- it's great fun and would be useful as a showpiece, something to play for concerts, recitals, productions, etc.

Published by David Fraser (A0.1383996). This volume contains five solo piano pieces expertly crafted and meticulously edited for accuracy. Advanced pianists will welcome the technical challenges and heights of musicality these works require. Music terminology for â??Le Cygne noirâ?? and â??L'océanâ?? are in French, with regard to the dedications of these pieces. All other works use conventional music terminology in Italian. 178 pages. ISMN 979-0-800277-00-9.David Fraser wrote the first 41 measures of â??Rhapsody No. 1â?? in 1997 and subsequently completed this piece and all other works in this volume over the course of six months in 2019. When playing the original 41 measures of â??Rhapsody No. 1â?? in 2019, Fraser noted that the music had some resemblance to works by Sergei Rachmaninoff. This encouraged Fraser to compose the remainder of this piece in a manner reminiscent of Rachmaninoff and, consequently, author a suite of solo piano pieces as homages to some of his favorite composers. In Rachmaninoffâ??s famous â??Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43â??, variation 18, the composer uses an upside-down inversion of a small melody by Paganini. Similarly, Fraser uses a backwards inversion of a small melody from Rachmaninoffâ??s variation for the Rhapsodyâ??s â??Adagioâ? section, which starts on Page 3.Le Cynge noir {The Black Swan} is the second piece Fraser authored, dedicated to his beloved piano composer, Maurice Ravel. In this piece, Fraser wrote in his own style while evoking images such as a swan gliding on a lake, peering at its reflection in the water, and taking flight into the clouds with its wings rustling in the wind. Fraser gleaned inspiration for this piece from Ravelâ??s song for voice and piano â??Histoires naturelles - Le cygneâ??, set to a poem by Jules Renard. Alwyn uses the basic three-four waltz rhythm with a great variety of style, and much of the music has that of a romantic approach, although here and there are nods to the composer’s earlier neo-classical style. The idea for the Fantasy Waltzes originated while Alwyn was on holiday in Norway after a visit to Grieg’s lakeside home. Although conceived as a continuous cycle, the suite does divide into two parts, Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 7-11, which encompass many moods from happy to sad, to mysterious and solemn, with the eighth waltz being one of the most attractive of the set. The Fantasy Waltzes are dedicated to the New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell, who gave the first performance of the work in a BBC broadcast on 2nd June 1957. Less than a year later, Farrell’s promising career as a concert pianist was cut tragically short after being killed in a car accident. Alwyn admired Farrell’s playing greatly and dedicated the fifth of his Twelve Preludes for piano to Farrell’s memory.

When my friend, the composer and pianist Neil Crossland, asked me to write a work for him to perform, he requested that I give the piece a distinctly Scottish flavour. Perhaps as a consequence, hailing from Scotland as I do, the resulting work is distinctly autobiographical in nature. This is a challenging piece, aimed at advanced players. The four movements reflect the preoccupations of four stages of (my) life as seen in hindsight. The word dimensions in the piece's title refers to facets of my own character. The first movement, Complications, represents the self-image of the young. The music is adventurous and academic, full of the potential of a life yet to be lived and the earnest self obsession of youth. The second movement, Romance, is the search for love, though seen through the lens of memory and therefore touched with sadness. The third, Transience, shows the uncertainties of middle age, so full of frustration and of nostalgia. This movement contains my setting of the Jacobian poem Will Ye No Come Back Again?. The last movement, Revelry, blows away the uncertainties of the third movement with the driving energy of a Scottish reel. Perhaps increasing age brings a certain perspective; what does it matter if you have more past than future? Just get up and dance and let Dr. Music sweep your cares away. The piece features a musical fragment (first heard in bar 26 of the first movement) which has been the cause of much amusement between Neil Crossland and myself over the years. Neil has been composing music since his teens but the art has only much more recently become a big part of my life. However, musical ideas have always had a tendency to come into my head and, several years ago, I decided to play these two bars to Neil. Every so often, in the years that followed, he would teasingly ask me how my new piece was coming on, knowing full well that I'd have to admit that my magnum opus was still only two bars long! By setting the melodic fragment at the heart of this composition I have finally ensured that he can tease me about it no longer. More importantly, I hope that Neil enjoys our little in-joke.The audio file for this work is beautifully performed by the work's dedicatee, Neil Crossland.

Movement 1 This is the result of my experimenting with the first movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata no. 23 op. 57. The Beethoven sonata’s overarching tonality based on F minor evokes a mood of darkness and despair. I used the time signature 4-4 instead of Beethoven’s 12-8, and my sonata introduces a new set of themes and motifs with tonality F major. These modifications posed interesting problems in figuration and modulation and changed the mood of the piece. Movement 2 This is a slow movement that might be characterized as minimalistic. The player should accentuate the right-hand octaves corresponding to the gradually unfolding melody. Movement 3 This is a theme with five variations, among which are rock, rag, and swing.

The music begins with Hansel and Gretel walking into the witchâ??s house made of gingerbread, cake, and candy. The children have a sense of unease and fright once they enter the house, which is demonstrated in the music by the eeriness and darkness of the harmonies. The term oscuro is found at the beginning of the music â?? this is the Italian word for dark. The repeat, which begins at measure 25, is marked sempre sotto voce which translates to always under the voice, meaning always in a hushed tonal quality and dynamic volume. This section represents the children trying to tip-toe out of the house without the witch taking notice. The repeat is almost identical to the beginning section, with the exception of measures 39 and 40 which have ties in the right hand; the similar measures 15 and 16 in the first section do not have these ties. Audiences could NOT get enough of it, and he could not bear to play it one more time! Such is Fame and Success. Well, we Normal Humans have had to look at the traditional setting of it, in two grand staves, with enough double-accidentals to blind a scribe, and try to emulate The Master from that pirate's treasure map. No longer. Here is a single-grand staff setting, with only the most minor modifications to accommodate the average hand, and spellings that show the true nature of the chords. The single best aspect of our setting here is the Total Elimination of the crossed-hand octaves throughout. When I realized these were only three or four-note triads, and not a pile of interlocking harmonies, I determined to make things clearer, for myself, and other players. The low notes all correspond to Rachmaninoff's bassline, except for one passage near the end. Only TWO octave doublings have been removed to make a smaller leap from the former lower grand staff to the upper. When I was a young student, this sort of music was baffling to my eyes, but not my ears. Now we can all see it and play it for what it is, an early masterwork, based on S.R.'s training in harmony from the Moscow Conservatory. A note can be the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and even 9th of some chord. They are all on display here, with a nice summation at the end, in quietude. MBB.

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. The music difficulty is virtuosic, extremely taxing to play.
