Prélude for Left Hand Alone (Classical Music for Tablet Series) by Alexander Scrià bin (piano solo) Opus 9 Number 1 - (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin [1871 – 1915] was a Russian composer and virtuoso pianist. Before 1903, Scriabin was greatly influenced by the music of Frédéric Chopin and composed in a relatively tonal, late Romantic idiom. Later, and independently of his influential contemporary, Arnold Schoenberg, Scriabin developed a much more dissonant musical language that had transcended usual tonality but was not atonal. He composed almost exclusively for solo piano and for orchestra. Compositions for left hand alone are valuable in developing and testing phrasing in the left hand. The most beautiful tone quality will be elusive if the left hand is weak in technique or phrasing. ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. Élegié in E Flat Minor for solo piano (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ by Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (Opus 3.1) ♫ Rachmaninoff (born in 1873) , Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor, was considered one of the finest pianists of his day. His compositions belong to the Romantic period of music history. He graduated at the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. After the premiere of his First Symphony in 1897, the negative reaction by an important critic sent him into a tailspin of depression that lasted several years. ♫ In 1909 he performed a series of 26 performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA. In 1914 he travelled to England for a concert tour. ♫ In February 1917 on the day the Socialist Revolution began in St Petersburg, he performed a benefit piano recital in Moscow for wounded Russian soldiers. When he returned home, he found that a group of Social Revolutionary Party members had seized his property as their own communal property. He had invested most of his earnings on the estate, but left it behind. Rachmaninoff's concert performance in Yalta on 5 September 1917 was to be his last in Russia. The chaos and tension of the October Revolution was daunting. He composed with the noise of gunshots and rallies in the background. He received an invitation to perform 10 recitals across Scandinavia. He accepted the offer, using it as an excuse to obtain permits so he and his family could flee Russia. ♫ He returned to the USA in November 1918 and America became his home. When he became an American citizen in 1943, Sergei Rachmaninoff said: “This is the only place on earth where a human being is respected for what he is and what he does, and it does not matter who he is and where he came from.†He died in March 1943 from cancer at the age of 70. The first is the Élegié in E Flat Minor, the second is the Prelude in C# Minor (one of his most famous piano compositions). This opus was finished in 1892, when he was 19 years old. CeÌcile Chaminade (1857-1944) was born in Paris and began studying piano at an early age with her mother, she later studied violin and composition privately and became hugely popular in France, the UK and USA. She was the first female composer to receive the LeÌgion d’Honneur and often performed for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. Her US debut was with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1908 where she performed her own Concertstück op. 40 for piano and orchestra. Despite the fact that most of her 400+ works were published during her lifetime her music fell into obscurity after her death; though in recent years there has been much renewed interest. PreÌlude was first published by Enoch & Cie, Paris in a collection of twelve short pieces called Album des Enfants vol. 1, op. 123. Many of the works in both volumes 1 and 2 have been on the syllabuses of the major music examination boards.

His name is sometimes seen as Artsibushev, Artsybuchev, Artzibushev, Artzybushev, Artchibousheff, Arcybusev, etc.Artsybushev was born at Tsarskoye Selo in 1858. His legal studies were at the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in Saint Petersburg, after which he practised in St Petersburg as an attorney. He also dabbled in music composition, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov gave him private lessons in music theory after Mily Balakirev said his works showed some promise.He also became acquainted with the music publisher Mitrofan Belyayev and participated in his regular weekly gatherings called Fridays (Vendredis). To mark these occasions, a group of 10 composers including Artsybushev collaborated on a 16-part suite for string quartet, called Les Vendredis. His contribution was a Serenade in A major. He also collaborated with others on Variations on a Russian Theme, in versions for both string quartet and orchestra.He was a member of the St Petersburg City Council. After Belyayev's death in 1903 he became chairman of the board of the Belyayev publishing house, in which capacity he had significant dealings with Alexander Scriabin. From 1908 to 1917 he was President of his city's branch of the Russian Musical Society, and later succeeded Rimsky-Korsakov as President of the Board of Trustees for the Society for the Encouragement of Russian Musicians.In 1920 he moved to Paris and became a director of the Belyayev publishing house there. The Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Victor Rosenbaum, did the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 with Mana as soloist. My work, Seven Steps To Heaven, for string orchestra was also on the program. After the concert we all went to a local restaurant for a bite to eat, and Mana asked me if I would be interested in writing her a piano piece. I said, Sure!!! For years I have been a fan of Glenn Gould’s recordings of the music by J.S. Bach. I am also a fan of the keyboard sonatas of Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. To prepare myself for this work for Mana, I delved into the scores and recordings of these two awe-inspiring musicians/composers, in particular the Toccatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach. I wrote the entire work during a three-week stay at the American Academy in Rome, 2009-10. The Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Victor Rosenbaum, did the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 with Mana as soloist. My work, Seven Steps To Heaven, for string orchestra was also on the program. After the concert we all went to a local restaurant for a bite to eat, and Mana asked me if I would be interested in writing her a piano piece. I said, Sure!!! For years I have been a fan of Glenn Gould’s recordings of the music by J.S. Bach. I am also a fan of the keyboard sonatas of Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. To prepare myself for this work for Mana, I delved into the scores and recordings of these two awe-inspiring musicians/composers, in particular the Toccatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach. I wrote the entire work during a three-week stay at the American Academy in Rome, 2009-10. Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

One of the more technically demanding preludes in this set, it is a definite workout for the right hand as it is nonstop triplets from beginning to end. Not only must the wrist remain loose, but the melody is contained in the right hand amidst the steady torrent of sixteenth note triplets. There is also a wonderful two measure hemiola figure where the meter seems to shift temporarily before returning to the established meter. The exuberance and excitement of the good news of Christ’s birth is the driving force behind this arrangement. Symphonic in its conception, the pianist needs to keep that in mind as they bring all the forces of the orchestra to bear. There are instances of brass chords, swirling string lines, singing woodwinds and thundering timpani, sometimes happening all at the same time. A tour de force and an excellent concert finale!

Following a raucous opening giving the impression of a grand brass fanfare, the prelude launches into the statement of the tune proper found amongst a flurry of sixteenth note patterns in the right hand that create an inner rhythmic drive over powerful and syncopated left hand octaves. The left hand becomes more animated, yet the rhythmic momentum continues to push the piece forward to its conclusion. There is the sense of timpani beating as the full orchestra comes to bear in a vibrant and unapologetically joyous finale.

Like preludes 2 & 3, it was conceived in a romantic mood, tinged with longing and tenderness. In this case, I wanted to write a piece with a catchy theme, harmonically and formally (ABA') simple in order to make it appreciable at first listen. I fall in love (!) with this piece, especially when played by strings, and so I derived from it other pieces: Agnus Dei for SATB choir & string orchestra, Andante for string quartet and Simple Song for solo organ.
