Much later I learned that the original melody was a world famous African-American Spiritual and that it was also used as a protest song in the USA in the 50es-60es. Every texture wants to stay. The horizontal occurs only because time passes, not because the sound aspires to happen, it seeks its moment by recreating itself, renouncing what will come for what it is, the transcendent for the immanent ... On the Keys occurs from the instrument's keyboard. That title, a frequent indication in the current scores to return to the interpretation on the keyboard, is my way of protesting the over-exploitation of the interpretation of the harp and other surfaces of the piano, my way of being bold in this 21st century. The work is dedicated to the italian maestro Cosimo Colazzo.

All My Trials is a folk song which became popular during the social protest movements of the 1950s and 1960s. It's classified as a spiritual because of its biblical and religious imagery. Joan Baez suggested it began as a pre-Civil War era Southern American gospel song. It tells the story of a mother on her death bed, comforting her children. No matter how bleak the situation seemed, the struggle would soon end: Hush little baby, don't you cry, You know your mama's bound to die. Too late my brothers, too late, but never mind, All my trials Lord, soon be over. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. McCartney had been staying on Long Island when the category-three storm Hurricane Bob that made landfall had hit in August 1991. This made McCartney sit with an acoustic guitar and write what he describes as a gentle love song that becomes a 1960s protest song. The song was co-produced by George Martin and McCartney, being started, finished, and mixed within a single session on 3 September 1992 in Sussex, England. It is the earliest recording on Flaming Pie. Around the time of the release of the album, McCartney's Wife of nearly 30 years, Linda, was suffering from breast cancer and sadly passed away 7 months later. The music video also portrays this with shots of the two of them together in her last days. Put simply, the song, lyrics, melody are for her and trying to tell the story of how the two of them were destined to love each other forever.Â

Published by Diamond S Music (A0.790093). POLONAISE in A MAJOR (MILITARY) Op.40 No.1 by Frédéric Chopin for PIANO SOLO. This is Chopin’s most popular and famous Piano Solos. This is the original Chopin version of the piece. During the September 1939 German invasion of Poland at the outset of World War II, Polskie Radio broadcast this piece daily as nationalistic protest, and to rally the Polish people. The A major Polonaise could hardly be more succinct, synthetic and condensed in its style and character. It has neither an introduction nor a coda, and the theme strikes one with its firmness and grace. As Jan Kleczyński put it, ‘Each note, each accent, glows with life and power’. The theme that complements the main part of the polonaise contains more of those pungent, robust sonorities, referring to the style of military music. But the pinnacle of succinctness and firmness is presented by the Polonaise’s trio, in D major. Chopin has it played energico and fortissimo. Here, too, the complementary theme brings strains of military music, evoking for many interpreters the sounds of a snare drum. This piece is one of an album of my contemporary classical compositions. Yes, I too wince at offering you something saddled with this oxymoron--contemporary classical--but this phrase is now an irresistible, commercially recognized category defying any principled protest from the ranks of wounded musicological curmudgeons like me. The style here employs a tonal palette that celebrates the more or less common practice of composers from J. S. Bach to Ravel, Prokofiev, and the 20th century American songbook. You will see that I reject Arnold Schoenberg's assertion that by 1910 tonality had exhausted itself, and needed to be reinvented according to an aesthetics that dismiss our scales and harmonies as purely arbitrary human conventions with no basis in nature. On the contrary, I believe that we are endowed by our nature to respond emotionally to our traditional materials of music in the same way as nature equips us to respond to the taste of food and drink. We differ in our taste for savory, sweet, and sour, but it is wrong to say that our very capacity to taste is a merely cultural convention. There is biology, and then physics too! By the same standard, it can't be true that one person's taste for arsenic is as valid as another's taste for beer or kumquats. The major triad is a force of nature, like the sun, wind, and rain! I also like big fat juicy 13 chords, and contrapuntal weaving of melody! I believe the purpose of music is to sway us emotionally, and if it can uplift us too, so much the better! While I am not ashamed to write a bare triad, unadorned by chromatic alterations (much less by clusters of chord collisions) I have nevertheless employed much complicated harmony. Moreover, some passages are written in a spiky harmony that might be analyzed as bitonal, as at the meno mosso section, beginning at measure 112, where the mood I wanted to set inspired me to write the theme in C minor while the left hand climbs up from the bottom of the keyboard in a widely spaced, D-flat 13 arpeggio. I have composed these pieces with the skills of intermediate to early-advanced pianists in mind. This piece demands the ability to play some counterpoint between two voices in one hand. There is a section that requires one to play moderately fast octaves, but nothing as difficult as the G minor Prelude of Chopin (to say nothing of his harrowing octave Etude from Opus 25!) While there are many polyrhythmic passages, none is more complicated than two-against-three notes. All said, there is nothing here to make your hands (or, I dare say, your ears) bleed. The performing time is around nine minutes and a breath or three.
