Dora PejaÄević, born in Budapest in 1885 and died in Munich in 1923, was a composer of the Croatian noble family.This Ouverture en ré mineur pour grand orchestre is one of her fascinating collection of works that allow for deep expression through the use of harmony that sometimes pushes the limits, as is typical around the beginning of the 20th century.This piano reduction was commissioned by the Japan Croatia Music Society and was completed in August 2021, and premiered in Tokyo on 18 September by the great pianist Mr. Tomohiro Adachi.Arranger Yuki Hasegawa, biography Arranger, pianist, conductor and producer. She completed the department of piano at the Kunitachi College of Music, and the departments of chamber music, eÌcriture musicale and orchestration at the Conservatoire SupeÌrieur de Paris-CNR. She also studied eÌcriture musicale at the CNSM-Lyon. She studied under Profs. Alain Louvier, Bernard de Crépy and other representative professors in France in terms of composition and arrangement. She later completed the conducting biennio department at the Milano Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado, and in recent years has been the guest conductor at the Japan Croatia Music Society. She travels to various parts of Croatia to research music, visits music research institutes and composers, and strives for understanding. As a chamber musician, she has also worked on numerous experimental harmony works of the same era as Dora PejacÌŒevicÌ, and has also recorded on CD. She is a member of the Irish Music Rights Organisation. Her works can be licensed for performance by representative organisations in each country. Published by Sean A Moore (A0.1397079). Sonata for Piano No. 6 Meditation is in two movements. The two movements are titled River's Flow and Prayer. The shorter first movement is both lyrical and motivic using some added tone harmony and the full expanse of the keyboard. The reference to the opening main idea played very softly at the end of the movement creates a sense of return to the movement's beginnings. The gentle opening of the second movement begins with a chant-like melody played in the lower register of the instrument. The movement grows from this point drawing its musical material from the opening melody and building to the climactic section of the work. Three staves are used to notate this section of the movement with the full expanse of the keyboard again being explored. Like the first movement, the second movement ends softly. However, the second movement ends with every note in the D natural minor scale (or D Aeolian mode) sounding together, creating a darker ending and a contrast to the conclusion of the first movement. Both movements feature expressive playing and mostly slow tempos and are intended to convey the “Meditation†part of the title by painting a picture of both introspection and transcendence.

As the composer, I wanted to explore the contrasting moods within this composition.  The sheet music for 'Rêveries agitées' was meticulously created using Sibelius software, ensuring accurate representation of the musical score. The MIDI sample, played by Note Performer, offers a respectable rendition of the piece.  Drawing upon my knowledge of traditional harmony acquired in the first semester of 2018, I crafted this short composition. 'Rêveries agitées' employs the evocative sounds of the natural minor and harmonic minor scales, showcasing a compelling interplay of melody and accompaniment.  The piece follows an A B A' form: the A section establishes a serene and tender atmosphere, while the B section introduces an intense and aggressive dynamic with a falling melody that ends in suspension. Fast passages punctuate this section. Finally, the A' section returns, concluding the composition in a poignant and melancholic mood.

My Prelude on the tune Dix (For the Beauty of the Earth) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. This exuberant setting in a conservatively modern style draws its energy from an almost constant stream of seventh-chord sonorities in the left hand accompaniment. The melody, sometimes unadorned and sometimes ornamented, contributes to the forward motion with the frequent appearance of a dotted eighth/sixteenth rhythmic pattern. Bitonal harmony is implied near the end of the piece. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950931). Based on the traditional English folk song, Greensleeves, there is a haunting, soulful quality to the melody that inspired me to write this prelude. It starts simply enough with the similar lullaby-like quality found in Away in a Manger, but the minor key makes it less restful and more contemplative in nature. It gradually becomes more complex, adding a harmony above the melody before the first statement of the refrain occurs adding another voice to the chords and ultimately leading to four-part chords. I then transition to a figure in the right hand to represent the twinkling of the stars as the melody is woven into the pattern before reaching a climax with the final statement of the refrain in full-throated adoration. The prelude then draws back in intensity, closing with the twinkling of the stars once again in the right hand and resolving to a major chord.

The congregation was jamming.

This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6. Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist.For more information on Armenian music, refer to : Kazarian, Hachig.
