This piece, which, in the company of Islamey, Gaspard, the Etudes-Tableaux of Rachmaninoff and various Liszt pieces, is at the pinnacle of both interpretive and technical challenges, is now brought into MUCH clearer focus with our new edition. Since the piece is practically a sacred text, no notes have been changed. Period. What HAS been changed is the presentation, especially in the 2nd movement, which is also our audio sample here. The small note-values, the radical time signatures, the measures that often take up an ENTIRE line of commercially-printed music, and the decided lack of cautionary accidentals: all these elements have been pre-decoded, essentially. No more using a hand-lens to see if that mark is a slur or a tie, or both! No more straining to see what note is held over, while the new one strikes. Our setting here, which you can see in the sample, often takes each BEAT, and puts a barline there, along with a common time signature, 3/4, 6/8, 4/4, etc. No smaller fractions, and no vast forest of dots and flags. All the 2nd movement rhythms have been arithmetically expanded, while maintaining their relationships. All the ornamentation, with its hidden melody, has been written out.So, while this piece has not been made any easier to play, it HAS been made vastly easier to read. One might claim that it is now readable at all, whilst the original cannot be deciphered at sight without great mental and visual effort. Please, print this double-sided for best results, as the repeats are either on a single page, or are on facing pages in our formatting. Single-sided gives you that same control, if you wish. Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording. A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players. Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier. None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands. My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line. Subside (from choleric to phlegmatic and back again) Composed 2004 Duration 6:00 approx. For ensemble and percussion This work was written in February 2004 in response to a call for pieces on the theme of 'The Four Temperaments'. This was part of CoMA’s Open Score project, made possible with funds from the Esmée Fairbairn and PRS Foundations. Programme note:'Subside' outlines a slow mood change from controlled violent anger to tenderness, then a sudden flip back to anger again. Technical notes: Percussion is essential, with the choice of instruments left to the discretion of the player(s), using the directions in the one-page score as a guide. The percussionists play on the 2nd and 4th beats throughout the piece - accenting the 4th beat. Other instrumentalists are divided between Parts 1 - 4. Parts are available in numerous transpositions - though it should be possible for instruments in C to read from the score. The dynamic markings in the score apply to all the parts. The size of the ensemble is not indicated, but ideally there should be enough players to allow for a reduction in the number of people playing two bars before letter D, and a further reduction to solo instruments six bars before letter E. However, this guidance can be ignored and the piece played by quite a small group; for example - violin, piano and percussion, or organ and percussion. If flutes and violins play Part 1 - the flutes may play an octave higher than written until letter A, and the violins may play tremolando until letter A. Keyboard players can play combinations of all parts. In addition, or alternatively, the keyboard players may double parts 3 and 4 an octave lower than written where indicated by the horizontal brackets, for example in the third and fourth bars. The allocation of instruments to the parts is left to the discretion of the musical director / performers - but should take account of the dynamic markings and expression indications. The last 2 bars of the piece are played 5 times in total.

Fast and lively foot-tapping neo-Celtic, at its best on electronic keyboard but also a fun piano solo. (Duration 8+ minutes) Reel Jiggery-pokery The song started as a jig but drank too much and reeled into 12/8 time. Properly speaking, despite its strong 4-beat pulse, it's a Slide. Or perhaps a Double Jig. Except for the mid-section, which is really a Reel! Needless to say, this is not for the purists...but it's huge fun for the rest of us! Playing and Performing We've marked it Advanced Intermediate. It's the indicated speed which makes demands! But you can play it slower and enjoy! On electronic or MIDI keyboard, use a percussive/plucked foundation (e.g. piano, harp, faux guitar) with a sustained string patch (string ensemble, synth strings, viola works well, fiddle works well, most violin patches are terrible!). For piano, you'll have to use more of the sustain pedal but not too much or it'll go all muddy on you, just like a mis-step in an Irish bog! (Original live and YouTube performances were on a Medeli MC 710, from 2005. This keyboard allowed splitting and dual voices. Piano was used as foundation both above and below the split point. A loud viola patch was used as the second voice on the upper part of the keyboard, as the dominant fiddle sound carrying the melody. A synth string patch was used as second voice on the lower half, giving the drones.) Add Your Own Salt and Pepper to the Score! The song is scored for clarity, not as a detailed demand for every possible nuance. It's fast, so although simple to look at when not playing, you'll need to be reading the music at speed. Unless, of course, you're blessed with a brilliant memory! So the score isn't cluttered with ornaments and fiddly bits, or lots of expression marks. Especially, it's not cluttered by a lot of suspended notes. BUT...you will need to suspend a lot of notes as you play. Think drones running all over the place and use your keyboard sustaining string patches to bring those drones out! Listen to the live recordings, they'll help. You, as player, have lots of freedom! It's up to you how many additional frills, or emphasis, or drone suspensions you throw in. Why alt.callahans?In the far distant past of 2005, there was an Internet newsgroup of that name, in honor and emulation of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, a fictional bar with strongly community-minded and empathic clientele, part of the fictional universe of American writer Spider Robinson. [Wikipedia] A place for tall tales and true, comradeship, puns both good and bad. We had fun there, and this song came out of it. The Internet world, sadly, has changed since.

The traditional notation for this piece is at the extreme of its ability to notate piano music - and it fails miserably! It is playable only by the gifted few who have the tenacity to race through reading this incredibly fast 6 flat Eb minor notation. with its additional double flats and accidentals, some of which must be played on white keys. Surely the piece must be some kind of joke - Chopin's way of thumbing his nose at those bold enough to try to play it. It surely is NOT the great music that Chopin usually crafted.The joke is that it is not really difficult to play. It is just incredibly difficult to READ! The music can be played, although without its breakneck speed, by students at the intermediate level if reading from a key map. This piece is an extreme example of how much easier playing from key maps can be.This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.)The key map staff is based on an Octave Group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). The vertical length of each note is proportional to the time (in beats) that the sound requires.

Published by Sibylle Kuder (A0.1373288). Short, two-page Etude to practice chromatic scale patterns. The counting is easy as the LH provides the beat. The note-reading could be challenging for someone new to chromatic scales. However, there are no sharps or flats in the key signature which instantly eliminates one possible challenge. Technically it is not as difficult as it may seem at first as most of the triplet chromatic scale patterns are less than a measure long, providing frequent chances for the RH to rest or at least breathe. However, like with any passage work, it is important to not press / push into the keys. While the harmony of the first two lines is very traditional, using chord progressions that an (early) intermediate pianist would be familiar with, from the 3rd line on there are frequent modulations and surprise key changes which may pose a challenge for a pianist who has not as much experience with that. Musical / interpretation challenges could be to keep it light, to shape the many short melodic patterns, and to play with a smile.
