The lyrics to this hymn note how encouraging it is to raise my Ebenezer and give thanks that Thus far, the Lord has helped us. Ironically, this hymn also describes being prone to wander away from God, in spite of His love. This latter phrase from the lyrics inspires the Christian to seek an ever closer walk with God, and so Bjorck begins and ends his arrangement with the portion of the traditional melody that accompanies these poignant words.

Three Hopper Paintings was written in the early 1990s. The three movements are connected by a ten-note theme. Much of the music, both melodic and harmonic, is derived from this. In my early twenties at the time, and having recently spent some months in Vienna studying the atonal and twelve-tone works of Arnold Schoenberg, I was greatly influenced by the music and compositional techniques of the Second Viennese School. The first movement, Nighthawks, is brooding and mysterious attempting to capture those qualities depicted in the painting. The music takes its cue from the early atonal piano works of Schoenberg. Rooms by the Sea has an impressionistic quality. With some exceptions, the music is predominantly in the sound world of Debussy. Some artistic license is taken with the last two chords to portray a sudden sea breeze closing the door shut. House by the Railroad is musically the most literal representation of the three paintings. The sustain pedal is left down for almost the entire movement to simulate the rumbling of an oncoming train. Allegedly, the house in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was inspired by it. Ironically, I lived in a small carriage house a few hundred feet from an active railroad when I composed the work.

Some know it as Chestnuts Roasted On An Open Fire or Merry Christmas to You. The melody is absolutely beautiful, and the chord changes super interesting. I especially like Nat King Cole's version, which is in Db major. To make it easier for intermediate piano players I wrote my piano solo arrangement in C major instead. It is still challenging  enough.The sheet music will be available for purchase at 2pm Chicago time on Nov 27.About The ArrangementThe arrangement is written in jazz ballade style. It doesn't swing. I includes a fun double time improvisation section though which I made up on the spot during the second B section when I recorded the song. I love the ballade feel and the beautiful chord substitutions he uses in the orchestration. First I simply played along with his version in Db major. This helped me to figure out the harmony. Next I start thinking about the accompaniment. Now it is time to practice it. Once I have the arrangement figured out I start recording it a few times, listen to each version, iron out the edges. Now it is time to record the entire thing. Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. I always think about fingering and sustain pedal use at the same time when learning a song. Smart use of the sustain pedal can really make it much easier to play.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who loves The Christmas Song. It doesn't matter would kind of pianist you are. The arrangement is certainly for intermediate pianists and up. It is also beneficial when you don't have very small hands. Some chords in the left hand require a hand span of a 10th. However, there are ways to get around that by simply rolling the notes with the help of the sustain pedal.

The intensity builds into a final coda that spins out into the universe. The performer is challenged to transpose this work into all minor keys after learning it in the original key of A minor, so as to demonstrate complete fluency.

Debussy commence à composer en 1906 ce petit recueil plein de féérie, une dédicace à sa fille Claude-Emma, plus connue sous le surnom de Chouchou, en 1908. C'est cette même année que le recueil est publié chez les éditions Durand, avec une couverture originale et plaisante faite par le compositeur lui-même. La première écoute officielle est créée au Cercle Musical à Paris le 18 décembre 1908 par Harold Bauer. Quelques années plus tard, Children's Corner est retranscrit pour orchestre par le compositeur André Caplet. Son audition est conduite par Debussy lui-même le 25 mars 1911. Bien que ces six petites suites soient dédicacées à sa fille avec les mots suivants : « A ma très chère petite Chouchou, avec les tendres excuses de son père pour ce qui va suivre », elles ne s'adressent pas à des mains d'enfants. Car elles possèdent, pour certaines, des difficulté techniques inaccessibles pour de très jeunes éxécutants. Les six pièces ont toutes un titre anglais, peut être faut-il y voir une aimable moquerie à l'anglomanie dominante de cette époque : 1) Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum 2)Jimbo's Lullaby (Berceuse des éléphants) 3)Serenade for the doll (Sérénade à la poupée) 4)The snow is dancing (La neige danse) 5)The litthe shepherd (Le petit berger) 6)Golliwogg's cake-walk Golliwogg's Cake-walk (allegro giusto, mi bémol à 2/4) est la pièce la plus célèbre du recueil, surnommée par le pianiste Alfred Cortot « Ataxique et dégingandée ». Elle représente l'apothéose finale de ce recueil. Il faut noter que le terme Cake-Wake correspond à une danse noire américaine et le mot Golliwogg représente une poupée de nègre en étoffe. Debussy emprunte pour la première fois la musique jazz pour exprimer la danse des gestes articulés et saccadés de cette poupée nègre. Au milieu du Cake-Walk, il cite à demi-ironique les premières mesures de Tristan de Wagner en indiquant une annotation piquante : « avec une grande émotion »! puis reprend une deuxième citation dans l'accord final. Gràce à cette pièce pleines d'effets musicaux et de contre temps rythmiques, le pianiste interprète développera un touché nuancé, de la sensibilité et de l'imagination dans l'éxécution pour faire vivre une oeuvre sautillante très originale.
