Published by Reimund Merkens (A0.910932). This is a pure piano version of Francisco Tárrega's masterpiece for guitar. Francisco Tárrega wrote his guitar piece in 1896 while staying in Granada. He named it after the 13th century Moorish palace in that city. The title means Memories of the Alhambra. Recuerdos is the most famous example of the use of tremolo on the classical guitar. It’s a difficult technique for the right hand. Here is now my arrangement for solo piano which needs good repetition skills of the right hand. Therefore it can be seen as an etude as well. I love this song so much. So I adapt it to my favourite instrument. It needs bit practicing to manage the fast repetitions.See also my arrangement for full orchestra.

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1089752). This is the complete set of Sketches I-VII, that each elaborate upon ideas previously left dormant in sketch form. The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. A Minimalist piece, using a constant 16th note figure in the R.H. as the L.H. plays low in the bass clef and high in the treble, on beats One and Three. Two alternate fingerings are provided for the R.H. part, so that the player can vary it to avoid fatigue. Each repetition should have a change of the sustain pedal. The tune marches up and down the Bb major scale, with a chromatic F# providing minimal contrast in the middle of the piece. Each new melody tone is introduced along with the preceding one, as a dyad,and then the leading note plays alone, followed by the next new dyad, except for the lone color-tone F#, which is presented by itself. It concludes with a coda that has the upper L.H. note staying on F, whilst the lower one proceeds down to Bb, and One Note Beyond, to A. Each measure is repeated three times. Approx. duration 3 mins 15-30 secs. Typical Minimalist features, and Counting each measure's repetitions is essential!

Could I replicate the angel’s basic speech patterns? My study of Greek in seminary has given me a pretty good idea of how to pronounce the consonants and vowels of the Greek language. But I would want to listen to someone who actually speaks Greek as their mother tongue to have an idea of the prosody. After further study, I have rewritten the angels’ music; this update represents my latest understanding.♫ Although Latin was the language of the Roman conquerors, Greek was the lingua franca of the Mediterranean world of the first century. Some scholars want us to believe that most of the Jews were not erudite enough to speak Greek. ♫ Yet those of us who have travelled to countries like Haiti, are not surprised that many people there speak Kreyòl, French, English and Spanish!♫ I began searching for someone who actually spoke Greek conversationally to pronounce Luke 2 :14 in Greek. After I found a reliable source, I reduced the rhythm and the accented sylables to simpified music notation. I pulled from my knowledge of ancient modes and used my imagination to add pitches and repetitions of phrases. With the global pandemic, many are struggling with physical illness or health challenges, personal trial, loss, or life's difficulties. Like many others, in these challenging times, I turn to music. ...like a small boat...sending big waves into motion Fight Song, written by Rachel Platten and Davve Bassett, has become an anthem of faith and belief for any person that is going through a challenge and brings comfort to many. The song was recorded in 2014 and won iHeartRadio's Music Award for Best Lyrics. When I pick songs to arrange, they are often ones that play over and over in my brain. I've been working on this one for several weeks. My arrangement is for the early advanced player. The arrangement starts quite simply but builds and builds into powerful repetitions of the chorus with arpeggios in the left hand and in the right hand and lots of fun crashing chords. This three-part presentation of Craig Sellar Lang’s communion tune, St. Keverne, used for the text From glory to glory advancing, begins with hollow fifths reminiscent of the Agincourt hymn. The tune, rhythmically altered slightly, appears in the right hand throughout the first two repetitions, the second accompanied by counterpoint. The third presentation of the tune shifts to the left hand for its first half, building to a climax using the alternative melody for the ending provided in many hymnbooks. They are intended as simple, meditative pieces, perhaps good for student pianists to attempt.In spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, I suffered a massive manic episode followed by a debilitating depression that lasted over a year. During this time I found my relationship with music fraught—I could not compose, and could barely even listen to music for enjoyment, relaxation, or whatever other reasons people listen to music. It was terrifying, thinking my life’s work was over.The shift to being unable to compose or listen, however, was a gradual, like the shift from mania to depression. I found my listening habits following what seemed like a massive ritardando, as they moved away from the upbeat music I was used to toward more and more ambient, very slow music. Hiroshi Yoshimura’s album Music For Nine Postcards was on repeat for a long while before the total break. Its calm repetitions must have influenced what I was doing, because I sometimes found myself at the piano playing the same note or chord over and over again, just listening to the details in the resonance. Out of this came the first of these four pieces, On Nothing.Eight months later I found myself doing it again, the result of which is Four One. Another eight months went by before About Sixths, and then, as my recovery became more and more apparent, only two months passed until On Sol. I am grateful to say I am now composing every day again, though my music has, without conscious intention, taken on a far more introspective feel than ever before.I have not given the pieces numbers, because I don’t mind if they are played in a different order, alone, or—as the title suggests—as interludes between other pieces. I do like the printed order though.
