The constellation Sculptor represents the sculptor’s studio with a table, mallet and two chisels lying beside a carved head. It is one of the fourteen southern constellations named by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. It contains some interesting deep sky objects such as the Sculptor Galaxy which was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783, who had a career first as a soprano and then as an astronomer. She was the first professional female astronomer, and (along with her brother William) discovered several comets and nebulae. They were working together when he discovered the planet Uranus. Like the other Lacaille constellation pieces, this one uses a twentieth century musical style. This Intermediate Piano Solo is based on a blues chord progression and uses the blues scale. In the improvisation section in the middle feel free to use some or all of the notes of the blues scale for your melody line, and if you like you can add texture to the left hand chords by comping on rhythmic patterns. Please choose your own dynamics. This set of three pieces is well-suited for advanced students or professional performers who enjoy creating and shaping mood, atmosphere and color on the piano. They were composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Claude Debussy’s birth. For that reason, they are based on various composing techniques and aesthetic ideas that he developed. Even so, there was no attempt to make them actually sound like Debussy’s music. In fact, while composing them I often felt like I was looking at Debussy’s techniques through the distorting lenses of music that came after him, but that he had influenced.I - Drifting Through ChangeOne sort of change in this piece comes from the interaction of two repeated rhythmic patterns of different lengths. Episodes of contrasting character then drift in and out of the piece creating more changes. The effect is as if one is floating quietly through empty space, but occasionally drifting past various objects or situations.II - Building CloudsTo me, the opening of this movement sounds like an idea from Debussy’s Nuages that has been turned inside out. Unlike Debussy’s more delicate clouds, however, the clouds of this piece grow turbulent and dramatic. III - Moonless HeathFor this movement, I imagine walking through an open untamed field on a dark moonless night and not being sure what I might be passing by. In terms of color and technique, this piece shows a more obvious relationship to Debussy’s music that the first two. It begins with a simple melody similar to that of his Bruyére, after which a Debussy-inspired ostinato gently moves the music forward. Structurally, the whole piece is an inverted palindrome so that a melody from the beginning returns in retrograde-inversion at the end, becoming a brief quote of Debussy’s music. Performance duration ca. 11 minutes.

A modern, meditative original composition, suitable for students and advanced musicians alike.Composer’s Note:Nojoqui Falls (pronounced NAW-ho-wee) is a seasonal waterfall in Santa Barbara County, California, in the interior foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains. It is the subject of stories from the Chumash, a Native American people who have lived along California’s central coast for thousands of years. When the area experiences extreme drought, sometimes the waterfall reduces to a trickle. But it is a beautiful, shady place with a magical quality, and the water always returns.For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:Pedal ad lib is appropriate for this piece. Unless a player has very large hands, the right hand will need to cover most of the top notes in the bass clef (the C ostinato). This can be a welcome challenge for students, as they will need to balance this with sustaining and shaping the top melody notes. Some of the middle C ostinato notes are indicated as optional, since they are already struck as melody notes during the same beat. (But they are still notated in case another instrument plays the melody.) It might feel awkward to strike some of the other C ostinato notes that are rhythmically nearby, but it can also be a good way to practice leaving that sustained melodic note ringing while striking the same note soon after with a much quieter dynamic, which requires both control and skilled use of the pedal.About the Composer:Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. As a soloist or sideman, she has performed at numerous music venues around California in an eclectic mix of styles, and recorded with a variety of singer-songwriters and rock bands. Her work as an accompanist spans classical, jazz, and musical theatre, receiving praise for her theatre work as a pianist and ensemble leader. She has maintained a teaching studio for over fifteen years, instructing musicians of all ages.

She was born in Kansas, Missouri but moved with her mom to New York when she was 15.While in New York, Suesse studied piano under Alexander Siloti, Franz Liszt's last surviving pupil. She studied composition under Rubin Goldmark, one of George Gershwin's teachers, and spent three years studying with Nadia Boulanger after World War II. In 1931, bandleader Paul Whiteman (following Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue) commissioned her to write Concerto in Three Rhythms.On December 11, 1974, Suesse and her husband produced a symphony concert at Carnegie Hall, devoted exclusively to her compositions. (In the 1990s, Robert Stern produced a CD of the concert using masters from Voice Of America.) On July 31, 1975, the Newport Music Festival (Rhode Island) presented four of her works in their concert series. A year after the Carnegie Hall concert, Suesse and her husband moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands.After her husband's death in 1981, Suesse moved back to New York, the city where she had spent her most creative years. She took two apartments in the Gramercy Park Hotel and continued to write plays and songs for the theatre. This 4-minute piece is a contemporary milonga (a musical genre strongly related to the tango). However, it has a harmonic peculiarity: the whole piece is based on a single chord (F sharp minor) from the beginning to the end. When the harmonic components are frozen, the melodic and rhythmical ones come easier to foreground. Connoisseurs will recognize some allusions to Sergei Prokofiev, Thelonious Monk, Alexander Scriabin & Co. Some advice for the performance: pay particular attention to the articulation. Generally speaking, articulation is disregarded as a secondary parameter, however it is as important as a correct diction and a clear pronunciation in theater or in movies. And particularly in Trayectoria ... some pieces can easily survive with an approximate articulation. This one wouldn't.
