This is not a simplified edition of the Ballade, but a reduction to make it more accessible for smaller hands -- hands that can reach an octave with no notes in between, and cannot play rapid octave passages. The difficulty -- and therefore the integrity -- of the piece is still there, but at least reachable for smaller hands. It is done well enough that in performance, that even the sophisticated listener will notice very little or no difference.

Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording. A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players. Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier. None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands. My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862657). The Prelude in C# minor was the bane of Rachmaninoff's existence as a performer. Audiences could NOT get enough of it, and he could not bear to play it one more time! Such is Fame and Success. Well, we Normal Humans have had to look at the traditional setting of it, in two grand staves, with enough double-accidentals to blind a scribe, and try to emulate The Master from that pirate's treasure map. No longer. Here is a single-grand staff setting, with only the most minor modifications to accommodate the average hand, and spellings that show the true nature of the chords. The single best aspect of our setting here is the Total Elimination of the crossed-hand octaves throughout. When I realized these were only three or four-note triads, and not a pile of interlocking harmonies, I determined to make things clearer, for myself, and other players. The low notes all correspond to Rachmaninoff's bassline, except for one passage near the end. Only TWO octave doublings have been removed to make a smaller leap from the former lower grand staff to the upper. When I was a young student, this sort of music was baffling to my eyes, but not my ears. Now we can all see it and play it for what it is, an early masterwork, based on S.R.'s training in harmony from the Moscow Conservatory. A note can be the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and even 9th of some chord. They are all on display here, with a nice summation at the end, in quietude. MBB.

This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

Could I replicate the angel’s basic speech patterns? My study of Greek in seminary has given me a pretty good idea of how to pronounce the consonants and vowels of the Greek language. But I would want to listen to someone who actually speaks Greek as their mother tongue to have an idea of the prosody. After further study, I have rewritten the angels’ music; this update represents my latest understanding.♫ Although Latin was the language of the Roman conquerors, Greek was the lingua franca of the Mediterranean world of the first century. Some scholars want us to believe that most of the Jews were not erudite enough to speak Greek. ♫ Yet those of us who have travelled to countries like Haiti, are not surprised that many people there speak Kreyòl, French, English and Spanish!♫ I began searching for someone who actually spoke Greek conversationally to pronounce Luke 2 :14 in Greek. After I found a reliable source, I reduced the rhythm and the accented sylables to simpified music notation. I pulled from my knowledge of ancient modes and used my imagination to add pitches and repetitions of phrases. Solo Piano Arrangement By Thomas GuntherThe Christmas Song is maybe the most popular Christmas Song in the USA. Some know it as Chestnuts Roasted On An Open Fire or Merry Christmas to You. The melody is absolutely beautiful, and the chord changes super interesting. I especially like Nat King Cole's version, which is in Db major. To make it easier for intermediate piano players I wrote my piano solo arrangement in C major instead. It is still challenging  enough.The sheet music will be available for purchase at 2pm Chicago time on Nov 27.About The ArrangementThe arrangement is written in jazz ballade style. It doesn't swing. I includes a fun double time improvisation section though which I made up on the spot during the second B section when I recorded the song. It is in latin style. The arrangement can be performed with or without improvisation. Should you be a jazz pianist you could use the included chord symbols to make up your own improvisation.About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is the exact transcription of my recording, including the improvisation part. (You can listen to it and see me perform in the video below.)The sheet music contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. How This Arrangement Came AboutMay arrangement is heavily based on the Nat King Cole version. I love the ballade feel and the beautiful chord substitutions he uses in the orchestration. First I simply played along with his version in Db major. This helped me to figure out the harmony. Next I start thinking about the accompaniment. Now it is time to practice it. Once I have the arrangement figured out I start recording it a few times, listen to each version, iron out the edges. Now it is time to record the entire thing. Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. I always think about fingering and sustain pedal use at the same time when learning a song. Smart use of the sustain pedal can really make it much easier to play.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who loves The Christmas Song. It doesn't matter would kind of pianist you are. The arrangement is certainly for intermediate pianists and up. It is also beneficial when you don't have very small hands. Some chords in the left hand require a hand span of a 10th. However, there are ways to get around that by simply rolling the notes with the help of the sustain pedal.

For ensemble and percussion This work was written in February 2004 in response to a call for pieces on the theme of 'The Four Temperaments'. This was part of CoMA’s Open Score project, made possible with funds from the Esmée Fairbairn and PRS Foundations. Programme note:'Subside' outlines a slow mood change from controlled violent anger to tenderness, then a sudden flip back to anger again. Technical notes: Percussion is essential, with the choice of instruments left to the discretion of the player(s), using the directions in the one-page score as a guide. The percussionists play on the 2nd and 4th beats throughout the piece - accenting the 4th beat. Other instrumentalists are divided between Parts 1 - 4. Parts are available in numerous transpositions - though it should be possible for instruments in C to read from the score. The dynamic markings in the score apply to all the parts. The size of the ensemble is not indicated, but ideally there should be enough players to allow for a reduction in the number of people playing two bars before letter D, and a further reduction to solo instruments six bars before letter E. However, this guidance can be ignored and the piece played by quite a small group; for example - violin, piano and percussion, or organ and percussion. If flutes and violins play Part 1 - the flutes may play an octave higher than written until letter A, and the violins may play tremolando until letter A. Keyboard players can play combinations of all parts. In addition, or alternatively, the keyboard players may double parts 3 and 4 an octave lower than written where indicated by the horizontal brackets, for example in the third and fourth bars. The allocation of instruments to the parts is left to the discretion of the musical director / performers - but should take account of the dynamic markings and expression indications. The last 2 bars of the piece are played 5 times in total.
