TWO BEATS, in this version for any keyboard, is a version of BEATS with an added second part. The original version of BEATS for soprano recorder was written in 2014 for Maria Dorner-Hofmann, a German recorder virtuoso who also teaches at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. The work, in 7 minutes, explores the evolution of repetitive cellular ideas using various meters, lengths of cells and musical atmospheres. There are simple passages as well as virtuosic ones and the energy level of the piece remains at a highly intensive level throughout the entire seven minutes.

Melody in F has been around as a so-called light classical piece since its famed composer made his US tour at the end of the 19th century. In its original form the tune was passed from hand to hand; unnecessarily, in our view. This setting has the tune ALL in the RH, where the in-between chords are as well. Anton, with his massive Russian hand, had no trouble using 10ths freely as accompaniment, whilst finding a thumb for the tune, once in awhile. We think Normal Humans might not like that quite so much. The LH can be arpeggiated freely by anyone without a comfortable 10th, which is to say, me and most of the rest of us, eh! The Leschtizsky Consolation, also in F, uses the same kind of RH thumb-tune, with chords above interspersed on the off-beats, just as his students' piece uses. Yes, he taught Rubenstein. These pieces both are predecessors of Rachmaninoff's harmonically-based compositions, where the tune and the harmony are a single unified entity.This music has a place for students and aspiring artists who want to know how the modern Russian School was formed. Melody notes are clearly double-stemmed, and harmony is spelled clearly so the harmonic progression is easily defined. MP3 file has Melody, then Consolation. MBB .

It makes it interesting to play and, I hope, interesting to listen to.

It's tempting to count in four beats, but make sure to count two beats per measure with the half note getting one beat. Most cut time meters have a moving tempo. Watch out for the consecutive 4ths in measures 10-16 and practice the fingering slowly. Keep the fingering similar in measures 14 and 15. Use little pedaling, using mostly finger pedaling to keep it legato.

The last four bars of the song are a perfect blend of alternating scales and blue notes, folding in exquisite ups and downs, and finally resolving to B major at the end. 　In the chord progression, the second half of [B] and Gmaj7 (two beats after Dmaj7) in [E] and [M] are not Chick Corea's original, but he seems to use them in this arrangement.

For Solo Piano with Guitar chord diagrams.Traditional dances in ancient Armenia were essential to celebrations, holidays, rituals, social gatherings and more. This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6. Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. The theme is famous for its 5/4 rhythm with 4 main beats (Slow-Slow-Fast-Fast) inspired by the Morse codes of the letters M and I (the two initials of Mission Impossible). The fingering I provided for playing bars 8-9 and 41-42 with legato in the right hand is quite comfortable if you already play Chopin Etudes Op. 10 No. 2 (chromatic) and Op. 25 No. 6 (thirds).

The waltz is the theme of Amélia, one of the two main characters in the film. In the second part there is a reference to the melody of the music box, which is a central element in the film's plot.Valsa de Amélia is a short piece, but through it it's possible to work on many musical and technical aspects, from the expressiveness and conduction of the melody, the balance of dynamics between accompaniment and melody, to the motor coordination between the hands, which often perform different or even contrasting rhythms. Although the basic idea is a waltz, the rhythm is constantly changing, often creating a conflict between ternary and binary beats.

Â I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody. Â The LH has a two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line. Â I have altered the melody and moved much of it to the off beats. Â As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato. Â This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire. Â (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir.) A Minimalist piece, using a constant 16th note figure in the R.H. as the L.H. plays low in the bass clef and high in the treble, on beats One and Three. Two alternate fingerings are provided for the R.H. part, so that the player can vary it to avoid fatigue. Each repetition should have a change of the sustain pedal. The tune marches up and down the Bb major scale, with a chromatic F# providing minimal contrast in the middle of the piece. Each new melody tone is introduced along with the preceding one, as a dyad,and then the leading note plays alone, followed by the next new dyad, except for the lone color-tone F#, which is presented by itself. It concludes with a coda that has the upper L.H. note staying on F, whilst the lower one proceeds down to Bb, and One Note Beyond, to A. Each measure is repeated three times. Approx. duration 3 mins 15-30 secs. Typical Minimalist features, and Counting each measure's repetitions is essential!

For ensemble and percussion This work was written in February 2004 in response to a call for pieces on the theme of 'The Four Temperaments'. This was part of CoMA’s Open Score project, made possible with funds from the Esmée Fairbairn and PRS Foundations. Programme note:'Subside' outlines a slow mood change from controlled violent anger to tenderness, then a sudden flip back to anger again. Technical notes: Percussion is essential, with the choice of instruments left to the discretion of the player(s), using the directions in the one-page score as a guide. The percussionists play on the 2nd and 4th beats throughout the piece - accenting the 4th beat. Other instrumentalists are divided between Parts 1 - 4. Parts are available in numerous transpositions - though it should be possible for instruments in C to read from the score. The dynamic markings in the score apply to all the parts. The size of the ensemble is not indicated, but ideally there should be enough players to allow for a reduction in the number of people playing two bars before letter D, and a further reduction to solo instruments six bars before letter E. However, this guidance can be ignored and the piece played by quite a small group; for example - violin, piano and percussion, or organ and percussion. If flutes and violins play Part 1 - the flutes may play an octave higher than written until letter A, and the violins may play tremolando until letter A. Keyboard players can play combinations of all parts. In addition, or alternatively, the keyboard players may double parts 3 and 4 an octave lower than written where indicated by the horizontal brackets, for example in the third and fourth bars. The allocation of instruments to the parts is left to the discretion of the musical director / performers - but should take account of the dynamic markings and expression indications. The last 2 bars of the piece are played 5 times in total.

RH has a hidden melody on beats two and three. LH has mostly dotted half notes that move in a walking bass pattern, some quarter notes, a few octaves. As is typical for a Toccata, the rhythm is simple. This particular Toccata is also harmonically simple: in the key of G major with a modulation to D major and back to G major. It would be perfect for someone with fast fingers who is not a strong reader.
