Niska Music Publishing #726553. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125813). Another arrangement that had its genesis as a vocal chart for Five By Design. However, this piece went on to be performed in our holiday show, “A Winter’s Evening.†I have always loved the Gustav Holst melody to Christina Rossetti’s poem, subsequently it was that setting that I chose to arrange for our group. When I was selecting pieces for my second collection of Christmas Preludes, I knew this would be among them. The piece starts out quite gently, and in my mind’s ear I hear a cello and oboe establishing a mood of utter serenity and calm as the snow gently falls outside the frost-covered window. Soon the oboe is joined by a clarinet as they play a duet while the cello continues the gentle sway of eighth notes. For the pianist, there must be great control of the left hand to keep it as calm as possible while the melody floats above, just as the snow falls to the earth. As the second verse begins, the right hand now plays a triplet pattern beneath the melody. It is a gentle breeze, stirred by the wings of angels and cherubim, upon which the crystalline flakes swirl and dance in the cold night air. All the while the left hand continues its steady motion of eighth notes. Halfway through the triplet pattern moves to the left hand and the right hand takes up the eighth notes while still keeping the melody above all. The verse comes to a close with a slowing of the tempo to emphasize the importance of what the poet states in the last lines of the poem: “Yet what I can I give Him, — Give my heart.†It is all that any of us can do, and all that we are asked to do.

Friends shouldn't just hang out in fair weather, so here is All Weather Friends, a gentle swing waltz ideal for established intermediate players at about the Grade 4-5 standard (ABRSM).The melody and accompaniment is based upon a classic jazz waltz rhythm, so to get into the feel of this piece, you may find it useful to first practice clapping this rhythm:Remember that the quaver eighth notes are swung.The trick with this piece is to let the melody sing out above the jazz waltz accompaniment, so keep an ear on the melody at all times.In bar 21, the semiquaver 16th notes can be played a little faster than written, which will create more of a 'turn' ornament. Have a listen to the performance recording clip (above) at about halfway through to get the idea.This jazz waltz piano sheet music provides excellent practice for working on phrasing and sustain pedal technique. Occasionally, you may find a couple of hand position changes that risk disrupting the flow of the melodic phrase. In these instances, try a touch of sustain pedal to smooth out the transition. An example of this can be found in bar 31.After the repeated opening melody, the middle section moves into the key of G minor, featuring a rising arpeggio-based accompaniment with sustain pedal. The old historical Rod and Reel Pier has seen many tropical storms and hurricanes. Yes, the pier has been damaged over the years, but it has always been repaired and lives on. This is the setting of The Old Pier. The relaxed mood of this piece is conveyed through a flowing left-hand pattern and an easy-going right-hand melody that uses the interval of a sixth. Amidst the gentle flow are some dramatic 32nd note passages that again give way to the calming and peaceful theme. Each movement concentrates on various concepts specifically for the beginner pianist. Movement one emphasizes the use of staccato, the key of G key signature and the use of flats and naturals. Movement two is meant for the student that is beginning to explore the piano outside of positions, but in a gentle, repetitive way. Movement three uses the key of D major and minor, to help students with accidentals and key signature studies. Movement four is also for the student that has learned to play without positions, perhaps one that has done some interval training, as this movement is based on the circle of fifths and fourths. The final movement has more of a focus on rhythm, articulation and expressive details. The left hand stays in low G position and the right hand stays in C position, making this movement easier to play, but it allows the student to focus on the other details. A great way for students to work on their skills, while learning a quick piece for Halloween!

Some of the pieces are solo piano and others feature duets with Mitch Iimori on English horn, oboe, and guitar (but not all at the same time!). The two musicians are obviously exceptionally comfortable and in tune with each other, and the results can be stunning. Very classical in scope and structure, the music is reflective of the natural surroundings of Ms Stevens’ home in the Colombia Gorge region of northern Oregon. The first eight of the fourteen tracks make up the Seasons Suite, a group of lyrical compositions inspired by the various times of year in a remote area of eastern Oregon. The other six pieces also have themes of nature and serenity.The Seasons Suite begins with Colors Change, obviously about the transition of summer into fall, but also about the concept of change as we grow. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of leaves swirling in the ceaseless wind of that area. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing!In Clouds, Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot! Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite. On Summit, Iimori trades his woodwinds for guitar in a gentle, sweeping duet with the piano. Waning Star is a gorgeous piano solo that has a peaceful grace and quiet serenity - a favorite. Reach For the Stars is a piano solo that has an uplifting sense of moving forward and reaching out. Dawn closes the CD with a warm and soothing confection. The piano is accompanied by light percussion, bass, and washes of synth strings. Full of hope and optimism without being sugarcoated, this piece is spellbinding in its gentle way.
