It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

This is my first original album, a soft piano album about the day of the week ‘Sunday’. Initially, I didn’t set out to write a full album, the piece ‘Sunrise’ ignited that idea after I wrote it. After writing that piece I decided to write more tracks and compile an album. I decided to write a total of 10 tracks, each reflecting on a different time during Sunday. The album begins with the sunrise which is the first track. You’ll notice that the whole album is in order from the beginning to the end of the day. After the sunrise it is morning and the frost begins to melt from the suns warmth in the air. Moving toward midday some light rain passes through followed by a thunderstorm then comes the afternoon, and the warm air. Finally, the day comes to an end as the sun sets on the horizon and then the stars revel themselves in the night sky.This album is meant to be a relaxing, peaceful album to listen to while you read, study, work, drive, or anything else you might do with music on in the background. I really enjoyed writing each track and it was a lot of fun to write a different piece about each part of Sunday. I hope that you enjoy listening to or learning these pieces and that they bring a little more peacefulness into your life.

For the composition commission, my author friend Sterling Wisniewski requested me to score a short story of his, with the score I provided being expected to tell the story of the words through music and accompany original artwork. His short story is included as follows:A cardboard boat sifts the surface of the sea. A little girl,eyes closed, arms wide and crowned with a paper hat, stands at the front of the deck. Unsinkable - that's what she was. Her imagination bounced the boat on the tension of theworld, almost like it wasn't there. Her eyes were closed, yet she saw everything. On shore, a crowd of dirty sailors went about their work. Nasty mouths swore and harsh fists carried their cargo to their strong, dirty boat. A boy, no taller than a barrel, was in the midst of the buff shoulders and fit forearms. He peaked between the muscle mountains.He saw her. They produced a distinctive soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's harmonizing, arranging, and composition skills. Â The condo was right next to the state park. Â Every night we would walk to the beach in the state park and watch the sunset over Lake Michigan. Â This music reflects that sunset ritual. Â The opening begins with the waves gently crashing on the beach churning up the sand. Â The first theme begins as the sun sits low in the sky creating a great sparkle across the water. Â An interlude descends down the piano as the sun dips lower in the sky. Â The main theme is heard again an octave lower as the sun sits even lower in the sky. Â The music begins to build excitement as the sun begins its final descent to the water. Â When the bottom of the sun connects with the water, the crowd begins to cheer. Â With every crash of waves, the sun sinks into the water of Lake Michigan. Â The sun disappears and we once again hear the main theme another octave lower as daylight disappears. Â The dark sets in and we can only hear the gentle crashing of the waves on the beach.

From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). It means The Sunken Garden, and I'll explain why below.It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), large rolled chords, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions.On a more personal level, this piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of repertoire before moving away last year. The Jordan Hall greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.Because the Wells Quad dorms are right next door, I hear this piece as a recollection of a social dance night that the dorms probably held frequently back when the Sunken Garden existed. Wells Quad served as a classroom/academic office complex for years after Jordan Hall was built in the 50s, but they are now back-converting the buildings into dorms again. (As of this writing, two of the buildings now serve as dorms, while the other two are still academic buildings. While I was pursuing my doctoral minor in composition, the composition professors' studios were almost all in Wells Quad's Sycamore Hall. They upgraded to the East Studio Building as soon as they could, though!).

The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition.As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

The composition unfolds with the allusion of the sun glimmering on ocean waves, followed by the playfulness of eddies and gusts of wind. These themes merge into one another as the wind increases in ferocity, culminating in the start of a storm with sudden strikes of lightning preceded by the reverberation of thunder. The pitter-patter of rain on the water steadily evolves into a full tempest that engulfs the middle section of the piece. As the storm subsides and the ocean calms, night has fallen and the twinkling of stars in the firmament are reflecting upon the water. The idea for the beginning motif came when I was simply at a piano and began playing around with chords based on quintal harmonies, chords built off of perfect fifths instead of the usual major or minor third. When I wrote this piece, I thought of a scene in which a pair of beings, one with a masculine energy and the other feminine, were dancing quite literally in the clouds. In the B section, the pair holds one another tightly as they share memories of one another, some fond and some bittersweet, before returning to their waltz. In the D section, the feminine being goes her own way and dances solo with a sense of vigor and raw passion. She goes a little too hard and trips, falling on the ground. The masculine being comes to her aid and gets her back on her feet, returning to their waltz once more. By the end, the sun sets and they part ways, sharing a tender embrace and a kiss goodbye.

Donelaitis poem The Seasons plots and the most famous artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907-1997) woodcut illustrations. These Donelaitis poem The Seasons illustrations have become classics of Lithuanian art. Composer created his paintings of the suite using native Lithuania Minor folk song melodies. Some of them are written almost 200 years ago. Most songs used are from Christian Bartsch prepared and published by Lithuanian folk songs Song of the votes. If you do not doubt that the song’s soul is in the melody, it should also be true, that the song is understood correctly only when we sing or listen to it – so believed Ch. Bartsch. He could not possibly foresee that the songs that sounded at his time will be wiped out in parallel with the East Prussian population. But after all, maybe he did predict? Therefore, he was rescuing them. The ancient epics and worldview associate The Seasons with cyclical idea of time, which is expressed by the view of The Sun’s path in the sky. The main hero of this musical work is The Sun and the diversity of nature, life and work associated with it. In the Eternal Circle we born, age, die - everything repeats, nothing new happens. In the second part of the The Cares of Winter, the Lithuanian traditional Advent song Sodai, sodai, leliumoj was used and developed.

When I moved to Oklahoma from Missouri, I was amazed at the variety of colors in the sunsets over the Great Plains. These sunsets served as the basis of Under the Oklahoma Sky. My aim was to represent a day through several sections, dawn, sunrise, morning, clouds, rain, rainbows, evening, and sunset. In addition to original melodic material, the work also uses the SLANE hymn tune, most familiar as the tune to Be Thou My Vision to represent feelings of awe when experiencing the sublimity of nature.
