About the arrangement(See also (PopJazzKeys.com/The-Bare-Necessities)This is a relatively easy to play solo piano jazz arrangement of THE BAR NECESSITIES. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long.What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!Who this arrangement is best suited forI think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later.How I arranged itAs I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions.The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower. Tips for how to learn this arrangementWhen I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.

However, this piece went on to be performed in our holiday show, “A Winter’s Evening.†I have always loved the Gustav Holst melody to Christina Rossetti’s poem, subsequently it was that setting that I chose to arrange for our group. When I was selecting pieces for my second collection of Christmas Preludes, I knew this would be among them. The piece starts out quite gently, and in my mind’s ear I hear a cello and oboe establishing a mood of utter serenity and calm as the snow gently falls outside the frost-covered window. Soon the oboe is joined by a clarinet as they play a duet while the cello continues the gentle sway of eighth notes. For the pianist, there must be great control of the left hand to keep it as calm as possible while the melody floats above, just as the snow falls to the earth. As the second verse begins, the right hand now plays a triplet pattern beneath the melody. It is a gentle breeze, stirred by the wings of angels and cherubim, upon which the crystalline flakes swirl and dance in the cold night air. All the while the left hand continues its steady motion of eighth notes. Halfway through the triplet pattern moves to the left hand and the right hand takes up the eighth notes while still keeping the melody above all. The verse comes to a close with a slowing of the tempo to emphasize the importance of what the poet states in the last lines of the poem: “Yet what I can I give Him, — Give my heart.†It is all that any of us can do, and all that we are asked to do.

Solo Piano Arrangement By Thomas GuntherSanta Claus Is Coming To Town is another one of my favorite Christmas songs. For some reason I love playing it in a bluesy style, with some jazz voicings. The bridge is more in stride piano style.About The ArrangementThe arrangement includes different stylistic elements found in more traditional popular piano music. It definitely has a bluesy vibe, but also shows elements of jazz and stride piano.When it comes to the form I extended it by adding an intro that comes back in-between sections in form of an interlude. There is also an outro. About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is basically a transcription of my recording. It contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. My Arranging WorkflowI have different approaches for creating solo piano arrangements of songs. The one I took here is as follows. First I come up with different ideas, try them out, and after a while settle on those I like best. Once I practiced and internalized those ideas I press record and hope for the best. Before the final version is done, I record myself many times over. This gives me the opportunity to improve upon each version until I have one that I feel comfortable with.Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. This way you get a better understanding about the phrasing and the rhythmic feel.You may want to spend a little time just vamping a few bars to get into the groove. When that feels good move on to different sections.The bridge is different in feel because it is based on stride piano rather than blues. Stride piano features big jumps in the left hand and big intervals between the outer notes (up to a 10th). Should you have difficulty in playing those big intervals (smaller hands will make this hard) you may roll the notes and use the sustain pedal.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who would like to try playing Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town in a more bluesy-jazzy style. Dependent on what your specialty is musically speaking, you made benefit from it in different ways. Here are some examples.Classical PianistsIf you are a classical pianist who rarely listens to jazz and blues music, this arrangement might be a great way to dip your feed into more contemporary genres and styles like blues and jazz. This said, it might be quite challenging. Not from a technical point of view, but from a musical point of view. For example, swung eighth notes and accents and phrasing in blues and jazz are somewhat contrary to classical music. It's gonna be a great learning experience for sure!Jazz PianistsShould you be a jazz musician or blues musician, you may not necessarily want to play the arrangement as written note for note. Instead, you might just fall in love with some of my ideas and create your own arrangement based on those.This goes especially for the solo section. You can play my solo or use it as inspiration for your own solo. Of course experiences blues and jazz musicians will prefer to make up their own solo.I truly hope you have fun playing this arrangement! Yes.

This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek improvise on ballads for inspiration.

(Luther published the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and was excommunicated in 1521.) Ein Feste Burg was translated into English by Miles Coverdale in 1539 with the title, Oure God is a defence and towre. The English text most familiar to me was translated by Francis Hedge in 1853. ♫ Luther believed in the power of music. In 1558 in the Forward to Georg Rhau's Symphoniae he wrote “I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. … next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. The Pitcairn Islands are a remote British colony in the South Pacific, famous for being the site where the mutineers from the HMS Bounty landed. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island†it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream†(sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. You can see and hear the music for most of these contemporary arrangements on Sheet Music Plus and some also on YouTube. This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers.
