Twenty-six Preludeswas composed for Holly Roadfeldt between September 2013 and April 2014. Unlike the famous preludes by composers like Bach, Chopin, and Debussy, mine are not organized by key. Instead, they are organized by threads: compositional ideas that are developed over the course of the entire set. Composing the set in this manner allowed me to develop several ideas concurrently with the idea that they would in some way merge together by the end of the set, giving the several disparate ideas a real reason to exist together in the same set. In addition, because I was not using key as a resource, I was not constrained by the number 24. The end result is a cycle of preludes that is in some ways more closely related to a Schubertian song cycle than to the Preludes of Chopin, Bach, or Debussy. That is not to say that there is not a close conceptual connection with the Preludes of those masters (there are subtle references to each of those composers in the score), but my intention was to treat the Preludes in a cyclical fashion rather than, as is the case with Bach and Chopin, an exploration of the nuances of the 24 keys. The preludes were not composed in the order that they are presented. Some of them came in quick bunches: two or three in a day; others took longer. In addition to developing the compositional threads, I was interested in creating a wide range of moods that also held together as a set. Overall, the moods become more intense as the set unfolds.The premiere performance was given by Holly Roadfeldt on November 18, 2014 at the University at Albany. I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan. About Six Preludes I started composing this set of Six Preludes for piano in 2014 and revised in 2020. The first piece of this set is Walking. There are different types of walks one can imagine. Octaves in the left hand at the opening represents walking sluggishly, whilst the middle section’s running right hand and jokingly bass notes representing a quick stroll. The Adagio recititavo part represents tip-toeing and finally the quasi cadenza part represents a trip on the floor, ouch! The second piece, which is nicknamed Joke, is a parody of Chopin’s Scherzo no. 1 in B minor, Op. 20. Take this piece as a lame unfunny joke, as in the slow coda, which is a sigh after listening to this joke. Night Song, as the name says, means a piece to be played at night, most commonly associate with pieces like Nocturnes, Barcarolles etc. The fourth piece, Chopin, is a homage to Chopin. I chose his Prelude in G and B flat minor, Op. 28 no. 3 and no. 16 respectively as sources of inspirations. Vision is a poly-tonality piece. Sometimes what we think or see, may not always end up the way it is. Hence, I hope to create this double effect by using the keys at the same time. The final piece of this set is a Fughetta. A fughetta is a small fugue. This piece is actually a piano transcription of the 3rd movement of my Three Colours (for Clarinet in B flat, Violin and Cello) which is composed and premiered in 2012. I revised and edited some sections. This is a 12-tone work. The P0 and R0 makes up the subject of this piece, while R11 makes up the countersubject. Six Preludes is dedicated to my friend Ng Yu Fei.

These two African-American spirituals (Calvary and They Crucified My Lord (And He Never Said A Mumbalin' Word)) are rarely arranged as piano preludes for church.Yet their lyrics, and thus the reflection they invoke, could hardly be more fitting for Good Friday services and masses. Composed by unknown enslaved persons, who were all too familiar with physical agony and pain, these spirituals shed an immediate light on the crucifixion and death of Jesus.Both pieces are set with lush harmonies, with a different iteration of the melody in each of their three parts. Reflective, poignant, powerful and prayerful, each arrangement is appropriate for Good Friday liturgies, as reflections during The Seven Last Words of Christ, and preludes during masses for suffering people worldwide.

A Minimalist piece, using a constant 16th note figure in the R.H. as the L.H. plays low in the bass clef and high in the treble, on beats One and Three. Two alternate fingerings are provided for the R.H. part, so that the player can vary it to avoid fatigue. Each repetition should have a change of the sustain pedal. The tune marches up and down the Bb major scale, with a chromatic F# providing minimal contrast in the middle of the piece. Each new melody tone is introduced along with the preceding one, as a dyad,and then the leading note plays alone, followed by the next new dyad, except for the lone color-tone F#, which is presented by itself. It concludes with a coda that has the upper L.H. note staying on F, whilst the lower one proceeds down to Bb, and One Note Beyond, to A. Each measure is repeated three times. Approx. duration 3 mins 15-30 secs. Typical Minimalist features, and Counting each measure's repetitions is essential!

Much more Bach-like than Handelian. A simple 4-note figure in the treble, and a five-note response in the bass, with a turn at the top, are used throughout. Arpeggiated chords and a dotted rhythm are also used throughout, to give a sarabande-ish feeling. Reminiscent of Bach's slower preludes, but not the usual torturous Eb or Bb minor found in the WTC. Just under three minutes in duration.

A varied set of three character pieces, quasi-preludes. They are technically advanced, suitable for study and enjoyment. Number one is murky, with a melody bordering on serialism. Fast rippling octave arpeggios present the main technical challenge, and musically the difficulty lies in creating a delicate tonal balance of melody and accompaniments. Number two presents much material using double thirds in duple meter against an accompaniment in compound meter. It is triumphant and mostly optimistic in character. Number three is inspired by the harmonies of Ravel and explores the technical problem of maintaining a melody line with accompaniment that frequently jumps registers in the same hand. The melody is found in the grace notes of the right hand, and they should be mostly played on the beat. I hope that these are enjoyed by anyone who stumbles upon them!

I also enjoyed imagining ways that each piece could reflect an aspect of each subject: 1. Barbara is a classy woman who I imagine has quite a social calendar; 2. Rachel manages three energetic children (two are my students) yet remains cool-headed; 3. John is a former adult student with an interest in new age piano music; 4. Marjorie is an effervescent personality and a logical thinker; 5. Angela is a thoughtful friend and is full of pep; and 6. Jean is a fellow church pianist who enjoys that genre’s sentimental style. These compositions can, of course, be enjoyed for their own merits.
