The four sonatas in this volume are a tantalising introduction to Artaria Editions' forthcoming publication of the complete keyboard sonatas of Domenico Cimarosa. (Sonata R20, R30, R25 and R27) The present edition attempts to present as accurately as possible the composer's intentions as transmitted in the Florentine MS with the exception of the grouping of the works into multi-movement cycles. Cimarosa's scant markings have been preserved throughout and, on occasion, applied to parallel passages. As in the original, the editor has placed the onus of responsibility for interpretation back on the performer although he has made occasional tempo suggestions where they are missing from the source. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Nick Rossi Sadly Nick Rossi died before this edition went to press. In the course of its preparation we discussed many issues relating to the genesis of the sonatas and the risk the editor takes in presenting the works to the public with so little help in the matter of interpretation. The dates of the two sonatas is not known, although it is clear stylistically that the E major is a much more advanced work compositionally than the E-flat major. The latter also exists in a version as a sonata for violin and keyboard, which can be dated to Kraus's grand tour, having been written in Paris in 1785 and subsequently distributed by the Viennese publisher Johann Traeg. Since there are substantive differences in the two versions, it is impossible to say which came first, and Hans Eppstein has suggested that their may even have been a third, now lost original for fortepiano, since the extant solo keyboard version clearly represents a more advanced version. This cannot be proven, but it seems clear that the version presented here can be considered Kraus's last word in this tortuous compositional trail, probably receiving its final form for publication as part of the Due Sonata per il Forte Piano that hlstrm published about 1788 as one of the first editions stemming from his new privilege. Given that the E major work is one of considerable complexity and virtuosity, it is probable that this sonata at least was composed especially for the publication. In any case, hlstrm's edition is the earliest source of the works; a number of additional copies dating from about 1795 and later all can be traced back to it. That the composer himself was involved intimately with the edition can be seen by the unusual number of clear and precise markings and articulations.These have been accepted without comment or alteration. Occasional obvious wrong notes, the result of overlooked proof reading, have been tacitly corrected, and some of the slurrings have been regularized according to parallel passages where such do not appear to have been deliberately varied. It is the suggestion of the editor that the Adagio of the E majot sonata should be performed la C.P.E.Bach in a fantasia manner with considerable flexibility in terms of tempo and relative rhythm; to play it in a strict fashion obliviates the flow of the movement. As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (*See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.*A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This medley of hymns was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second hymn is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

The ninth of my 12 Lyric Etudes. 'The Dragonfly' is an obvious play on Bumblebee which I couldn't use because it was already taken for Flight of the Bumblebee. The approach however, is similar. A scanting right hand plays rapidly, non-stop for the entire piece over the Left hand that plays the melody using 10th intervals. Difficult to master but well worth it. I've played this in concert many times.

This is my first time I have written a piece that doesnot have a standard structure. It is also the first time that I have expressed my feelings about Australia through music, inspired by Lawson’s moving poem. The reason why I name my piece ‘Consciousness2.0’ is because it depicts a picture of how people rise and fall in life. An example of this is what happened during the Australian bushfires, which was a time when people were very aware of what was happening. Consciousness means to be aware and responsive to the surroundings, and it can also mean a person’s perspective of events. My piece begins with a soft introduction, which describes the life of Australia and its unique environment. From the bustling cities to the open country, there is always some life around Australia. Sometimes there is also some wild weather, which is represented in the arpeggiated left hand (bars 10-14). The story then shifts its focus to the animals, through short 2-part phrase in bars 23-26. The animals areenjoying their time in nature. The phrase is in Aeolian mode, so there is a bit of mystery instead of having an obvious key. Then, the parallel fifths depict the openness and vastness of the land. The transition is shown in bars 32-34 by a smooth 4-part phrase going downwards. The next fast section (bars 35-47) describes the rise of panic, just like a howling heat of the bushfire. The chromatic 7th chords (bars 36,38) make a sense of tension, and after 3 times, the chromaticism makes its way to a recent memory of the rushing semiquavers (bars 43-44) After the bushfires came closer, animals panicked as they rushed and left their precious homes. It was devastating to see how many people were affected, with houses destroyed, people and animals burning into the ashes (bars 48-54). Then there is another new section (bars 55-68) which describes the uncertainty, for example, the right-handquavers describe a flashback of nature planning itself to create a bushfire, or the times when people were planning a solution to this incident. The uncertainty was unfolded when the fast right hand semiquavers come back, (bars 69-82) creating a whoosh of destruction disappointment and adjustment. The last part is the ending of story (bars 84 to end). Though the fire has made a lot of destruction, with Aussie spirit, there is always hope that everyone can rebuild a new and better community in the future

This charming Intermezzo deserves to find new audiences again. In this edition, RIck Robertson has corrected some obvious mistakes and clarified some confusing notation. This is not a transcription or arrangement, but is an edited original. As pianists look for works by women composers to add to their repertoire, this is a worthy addition.

Exodus of Kobol, for Piano was composed in 2011 The Inspiration Being a long time fan of the Battle Star Galactica science fiction series, inspired Exodus of Kobol. According to Colonial scriptures Kobol was the birthplace and original home of humanity where humans lived with their gods, the Lords of Kobol. Due to over population, waste, natural disasters and an undetermined conflict, humans fled the planet and founded the twelve colonies. According to legend there was a thirteenth colony called Earth. All this ultimately an attempt at new beginnings. The Music The piece is essentially in ABA format. The opening melody, haunting in nature, is contrasted by a driving left hand accompaniment which leads into a melancholy B section of picturesque chords; a variation on a portion of the opening melody. The A section then returns dramatically in an unexpected harmonic change followed by an energetic but somewhat unearthly ending. Impressionism influences are obvious throughout the piece.

It was also written before swing became popular, and thus would not have been swung when it was originally published. In this edition, RIck Robertson has corrected some obvious mistakes and clarified some confusing notation. This is not a transcription or arrangement, but is an edited original. As pianists look for works by women composers to add to their repertoire, this is a worthy addition.

It is a lively and compelling march that has been continuously popular with Protestant congregations for 150 years. The Salvation Army adopted it as a favorite processional early in the 20th C. This hymn is often sung at military funerals including that of American president Eisenhower in1969. Apart from its obvious martial associations, the song has also been embraced by political causes such as the American civil rights movement. It is arranged here as an Intermediate Piano Solo and is included in McIntire's series, Gospel Piano Series. This set of three pieces is well-suited for advanced students or professional performers who enjoy creating and shaping mood, atmosphere and color on the piano. They were composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Claude Debussy’s birth. For that reason, they are based on various composing techniques and aesthetic ideas that he developed. Even so, there was no attempt to make them actually sound like Debussy’s music. In fact, while composing them I often felt like I was looking at Debussy’s techniques through the distorting lenses of music that came after him, but that he had influenced.I - Drifting Through ChangeOne sort of change in this piece comes from the interaction of two repeated rhythmic patterns of different lengths. Episodes of contrasting character then drift in and out of the piece creating more changes. The effect is as if one is floating quietly through empty space, but occasionally drifting past various objects or situations.II - Building CloudsTo me, the opening of this movement sounds like an idea from Debussy’s Nuages that has been turned inside out. Unlike Debussy’s more delicate clouds, however, the clouds of this piece grow turbulent and dramatic. III - Moonless HeathFor this movement, I imagine walking through an open untamed field on a dark moonless night and not being sure what I might be passing by. In terms of color and technique, this piece shows a more obvious relationship to Debussy’s music that the first two. It begins with a simple melody similar to that of his Bruyére, after which a Debussy-inspired ostinato gently moves the music forward. Structurally, the whole piece is an inverted palindrome so that a melody from the beginning returns in retrograde-inversion at the end, becoming a brief quote of Debussy’s music. Performance duration ca. 11 minutes.

Some of the text may date back as far as the 18th century. Although it has been used in communion since at least the Civil War, that may not have been its original intent.I have heard lectures given by researchers who claim that many African-American spirituals contain coded messages, intended for slaves, about secret meetings, clandestine worship services, and escape plans. Some songs are even said to contain maps.The texts are innocuous on the surface, so as to not alert the slave owners. Some of the double meanings seem obvious in retrospect:When Israel was in Egypt land,Let My people go.Oppressed so hard they could not stand,Let My people go.And:Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!Steal away, steal away home. I ain’t got long to stay here.In Let Us Break Bread Together, this curious line may have a double meaning:When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sunCommunion needn’t take place at daybreak, nor while facing east. The lyrics could be a pointer to a specific time and place for a prohibited meeting.Whatever its original meaning, this and many other African-American spirituals are now an important part of many worship traditions.

The piece demands that the pianist is able to decode a difficult key signature, and is able to execute a series of very energetic broken chords up and down the keyboard. The melody is relatively simple - but its flowing rhythm will make it glaringly obvious if a student fails to keep a steady time!
