It has more sweep and scope than most of his other piano music and most of the sonatas as well. Thus, it was favored as a showpiece. Our setting uses all the trademarks of our house style: no clef changes in the middle of ANY measure, labeled notes above three ledger lines, written-out ornamentation, the re-distribution of various notes into the opposite hand to facilitate a gesture, and a minimum of interpretive markings and multiple voices, so as to make sure you know where each New Note Begins, and less attention paid to how long it lasts. This piece has a repeat at the three-minute mark, which requires a turnback from the top of pg. 3 to the beginning, a bit outside of our usual practice, but unavoidable here, UNLESS one considers that repeat as optional, and avoids it, which Brendel does indeed do. Full running time at our conservative tempo is 13 mins+. Pedal this deeply for a resonant effect on all the sweeping arpeggios, or use it sparingly for a dryer, more early Classical Period sort of effect. MBB

Capricious FantasyAs per the request of pianist Michael Tsalka, this flowing, expressive and lyrical piece is based on motives from the music of Classical Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Wanhal. Motives from his Capriccio No. 3, for piano, are used as fundamental building blocks, but the style of their expression and development is radically different. Because motives from different sections or movements of Wanhal’s piece all appear in this single movement, the character and expression here is more changeable, less stable and some might even say more romantic than Wanhal’s capriccio. Technically, this piece borrows ideas of repetition and continuous flow from recent minimalist music, but the effect is more lyrical, flexible and dramatic than classic minimalism. It begins with the repetition of four chords that were derived from notes used in one of Wanhal’s melodic motives. New melodies based on that motive then enter with different phrase lengths, creating a gentle dialogue of independent voices. Eventually, a faster idea from the same capriccio is introduced, but it is first played slowly and freely before its tempo increases. The entire piece then continues unfolding as a freely flowing dialogue of moods, tempos and characters based on these three simple ideas and it culminates with fast notes and strong declarations before subsiding into a gentle ending that includes all three motives.Performance duration ca. 6 minutes.

Mozart's music is often described as being hard to play because of its thinness, its transparency, and lightness of texture. he compensates for the lack of thunderous chords and bravura with melody, and Syncopation. This piece abounds in both, especially the latter. To further the readability of these L-R alternating syncopated figures, we have used a rhythm which has fewer rests, which reflects the performance style of Emil Gilels, the Russian pianist known for his golden sound. One of the ways he achieved that sound was frankly by playing through many rests in Mozart, Beethoven and other composers whose scores were the vehicles for his sound. Weird, but true. All the original rhythms have been doubled for better visual clarity. Our score has fewer 16th-rests and more stemmed-together notes.When the syncopation is unavoidable and required, we use detached 16ths similar to what a vocalist would find in an opera recitative. The cadenzas are written out in full-size notes, and fingered for logical harmonic and scalar groupings. The ornamentation is also written out, similar to what one might in a grayed-out ossia box from some commercial publishers. MBB.

The Autumn Breeze starts with the first 3 notes of the famous Autumn Leaves, to be played with extreme rubato depicting breeze. Winter Nocturne is Chopin-like in nature (one hopes). Spring Dance alludes to many spring themes from Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi, with much distortion to the meter, rhythm and harmonies, and a reference to a Japanese anime tune.

"The Night King" was composed by Ramin Djawadi for the final season of HBO's fantasy series "Game of Thrones".

The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor Quasi una fantasia, Op. 27, No. 2, popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata, is a piano sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was completed in 1801 and dedicated in 1802 to his pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. The piece is one of Beethoven's most popular compositions for the piano, and it was a popular favorite even in his own day. Beethoven wrote the Moonlight Sonata in his early thirties, after he had finished with some commissioned work; there is no evidence that he was commissioned to write this sonata. The first edition of the score is headed Sonata quasi una fantasia, a title this work shares with its companion piece,Op. 27, No. 1. Grove Music Online translates the Italian title as sonata in the manner of a fantasy.The title could also be interpreted to imply ...as though improvised. The name Moonlight Sonata comes from remarks made by the German music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab. In 1832, five years after Beethoven's death, Rellstab likened the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. Within ten years, the name Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was being used in German and English publications. Later in the nineteenth century, the sonata was universally known by that name. Many critics have objected to the subjective, romantic nature of the title Moonlight, which has at times been called a misleading approach to a movement with almost the character of a funeral march and absurd. Other critics have approved of the sobriquet, finding it evocative or in line with their own interpretation of the work. Gramophone founder Compton Mackenzie found the title harmless, remarking that it is silly for austere critics to work themselves up into a state of almost hysterical rage with poor Rellstab, and adding, what these austere critics fail to grasp is that unless the general public had responded to the suggestion of moonlight in this music Rellstab's remark would long ago have been forgotten. DEATH for solo piano, by Dom Waldock.This piano piece is directly inspired by Terry Pratchett’s depiction of the character Death from his fantasy Discworld novels. He is portrayed visually in a similar way to many other personifications in literature: as a skeleton in a hood and cloak carrying a scythe. His personality, however, is more comical and he has a particular fascination with humanity. Within this composition we hear the introduction of Death with the sound of “funeral bellsâ€, replicated by long and slow notes low in the piano’s range. The harmony is dissonant and unnerving as the supernatural being strolls through his realm.The music soon takes a turn to a mid-register melody to represent the mortal world and the death of a loved one, embellished with high-pitched arpeggios to suggest the approach of something magical. Eventually Death’s chimes and the mortal being meet and their themes are intertwined, as the reaper leads them out of this world and into the next. They fade off into the distance and all we are left with is the lonesome ring of the funeral bells.

The Etherea Suite, Volume 1 is for intermediate to advanced players who enjoy lyrical, exciting, and showy repertoire, while expressing their imagination through their playing. Players get to musically explore the mountains, the desert, volcanoes, time travel to ancient times, and fight in battle! Volume I of the suite represents three main characters from the sci-fi, fantasy book Trials of the Innermost (release date May 26, 2023). Each movement has a distinct feel and reflects each character's personality. This edition features performance notes written by the composer, including musical elements unique to each movement, fun facts, and personal influences JohnWillard had in mind when creating the work. A graphic of the musical cryptogram system used to make the melodies for each character is featured at the end of the notes. The three movements imitate a sonata, with the overall order of the suite is slow, slow, fast. Some teaching elements in the first movement I. Vayriel: Protector of the Mountains, include: scalar passages (A natural minor scale), shifting hands position, rolled chords, repeated left hand patterns, ornaments, and pedaling. II. Zinvar: Peacemaker of the Volcanic Rifts is more challenging, but has more room for musicality, expression, exploring different touches on the piano, and ethereal use of pedaling, like the sostenuto pedal (if you have one!) The movement opens with a mysterious, wave-like arpeggiated left hand pattern, similar to pieces of Chopin or Rachmaninoff. The B section is practice in using the sostenuto (middle) pedal while playing softly, imitating Gregorian Chant. Best of all the ending sounds harder than it actually is and you get to play as loud as possible! III. Idrilia: Warrior of the Desert is fast paced, rhythmic, and inspired by video games. This piece is a nice supplement for students learning techniques found in toccatas, nocturnes, and pieces that require a big, full sound. The longest and most advanced movement, players can enjoy using all the things: pedaling, accents, quick changes in dynamic contrast, and a lyrical B section. Technique requires comfort with arpeggios, chord inversions, octaves, and sensitivity to voicing. Once mastered, this movement can be both fun to play as a stand-alone recital piece or an exciting treat to play for friends and family. You'll find yourself humming the simple melody as it transforms throughout the work, and the ending is a chance to play big chords by using the full range of the keyboard.
