Scene of Shulamis is one of the two surviving fragments of music to the Moscow State Yiddish Theater (GOSET) production Shulamis (1937), and it definitely is one of the masterpieces of Yiddish musical culture of the 20th century. The range of the solo part is Eb4–Bb5. Introductory text to the publication, written by Sergei Leonov, includes a short biography of the composer and a detailed description of Scene of Shulamis.

My settings are an accessible alternative and will provide teachers with new tools for their students’ technical and musical advancement. They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes. Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian. I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal. My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

The musical language is intensely melodic, colorfully harmonic in a chromatic yet tonal idiom, and rhythmically vibrant and forward moving. A challenging suite for advanced intermediate students and professionals alike, and quite rewarding as a modern work that communicates deeply and richly to an audience.
