Winner of the 2019 SMP Press Contemporary Composition award, Wu Xing - Sonata for Five Elements (5 movements, 15 min. 30 sec) was composed by Jeffrey Hoover for Yusheng Li, who initiated the first professional university saxophone degree in China. A work for alto saxophone and piano, Wu Xing reflects a fusion of American and Chinese musical aesthetics and compositional techniques. Each movement represents an element in the traditional Wu Xing generative cycle. Musical elements of one movement carry into the next, in the same way these traditional Chinese elements evolve into the next: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The fourth movement, Metal, is for unaccompanied saxophone, and includes extended techniques including microtones, multiphonics, and altered tone colors. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, Hoover has also created a series of paintings that visually interpret the music: Dancing in the Trees, The Ancient Lance, The Dragon's Creation, Temple Bells and Swords, and Life of the Earth. In the way the music is a fusion of American and Chines techniques, the paintings incorporate the Wu Xing philosophy approach. Images of the paintings may be projected during performance and are available directly from the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as and .Sc. from Ball State University. My Saxophone and Me consists of fourteen short and delightful pieces written especially for absolute beginners up to students at elementary level. The book comes in two versions, one for B flat saxophones and the other for E flat instruments. However, for obvious reasons you cannot mix B flat and E flat instruments in the same group. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for some beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. This is because the teacher is usually in the best position to suggest phrasing within the physical capabilities of each student. Slurs have been employed sparingly and only when necessary. The music has been converted into pdf files at 1,200 dpi which will produce professional looking printed copies of high quality. However, the output quality will also depend on your own printer settings and capabilities. The publication consists of a teacher's book (18 pages) and a student's book (8 pages) both contained in the same pdf file. The piece is 85 measures long and in 6/4 meter is written in ternary form; after the primary theme, the secondary theme starts in measure 19, followed by a modified version of the primary theme in measure 70. The opening section moves into a contrasting middle section in the same key signature, which flows back to the opening material in a transitional passage. The reprise of the first section grows out of this, followed by a Picardy third ending.This arrangement for alto sax with piano accompaniment reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for any purpose and occasion.

The Impromptus, Op. 90, D. 899, are a set of four impromptus for solo piano composed by Franz Schubert in 1827. They were written in the same year as the Impromptus, Op. 142, though only the first two pieces were published during Schubert's lifetime. Together with the latter set, they have become a cornerstone of the piano repertoire. The third Impromptu (Andante) is an wonderful epitome of slow-moving Schubert melody over a flowing arpeggiated accompaniment. This lyrical and meditative work remains unified in mood and texture throughout. The piece is a classic example of Schubert's penchant for long melodic lines.This easy arrangement for alto sax (or baritone sax) with piano accompaniment is suitable for classroom, repertoire, recital, wedding or for an emotional encore.

DoReMi Edition #653319. Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1048927). Chinese Rhapsody No.3 was composed e in Toronto, Canada , 1988. Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra.
