He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. One of that set was called Pleasant Landscape, which I have freely arranged for accompanied Instrumental Solo. I have slowed it down considerably from the original and marked it with passionate energy. The beauty and interest is created by the shaping and phrasing of this beautiful melodic line. It has a rubato feeling throughout with constant tempo changes like rall, molto rall, freely, accel, etc. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. The equally beautiful piano part provides great interplay of expressive harmony and countermelody. One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director ofmusic of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London.While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series inLondon. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octavemechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and begantouring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the«turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, throughChina and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It wasduring this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). Hesubsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyageswere subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection knownas The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution.Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, heperformed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire ImperialFamily. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.Souvenirs du Cap Bonne Espérence (Souvenirs of the Cap of Good Hope) begins with a dramatic aria, perhaps evoking the trip to the Cap which was, in the 19th century, still very dangerous. The Irish folksong « the Irish Emigrant » is presented as a them and in two variations. Finally an extended polka in rondo form finishes the work brilliantly.

It has become a jazz standard.It is also known as Interlude. Gillespie called the tune Interlude and said some genius decided to call it 'Night in Tunisia'. He said the tune was composed at the piano at Kelly's Stables in New York. He gave Frank Paparelli co-writer credit in compensation for some unrelated transcription work, but Paparelli had nothing to do with the song. A Night in Tunisia was one of the signature pieces of Gillespie's bebop big band, and he also played it with his small groups. In January 2004, The Recording Academy added the 1946 Victor recording by Gillespie to the Grammy Hall of Fame.On the album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1, Art Blakey introduced his 1954 cover version with this statement: At this time we'd like to play a tune [that] was written by the famous Dizzy Gillespie. I feel rather close to this tune because I was right there when he composed it in Texas on the bottom of a garbage can. The audience laughs, but Blakey responds, Seriously. The liner notes say, The Texas department of sanitation can take a low bow.The complex ostinato bass line in the A section is notable for avoiding the standard walking bass pattern of straight quarter notes, and the use of oscillating half-step-up/half-step-down chord changes (using the Sub V, a tritone substitute chord for the dominant chord) gives the song a unique, mysterious feeling. The B section is notable for having an unresolved minor II-V, since the chord progression of the B section is taken from the B section of the standard Alone Together, causing the V chord to lead back into the Sub V of the A section.Like many of Gillespie's tunes, it features a short written introduction and a brief interlude that occurs between solo sections - in this case, a twelve-bar sequence leading into a four-bar break for the next soloist.

The best known March of the set, it had its premiere in Liverpool on 19 October 1901, with Elgar conducting the Liverpool Orchestral Society. The Trio contains the tune known as Land of Hope and Glory. In 1902 the tune was re-used, in modified form, for the Land of hope and glory section of his Coronation Ode for King Edward VII. The words were further modified to fit the original tune, and the result has since become a fixture at the Last Night of the Proms, and an English sporting anthem. In the United States, the Trio section Land of Hope and Glory of March No. 1 is often known simply as Pomp and Circumstance or as The Graduation March and is played as the processional tune at virtually all high school and some college graduation ceremonies. It was first played at such a ceremony on 28 June 1905, at Yale University, where the Professor of Music Samuel Sanford had invited his friend Elgar to attend commencement and receive an honorary doctorate of music. Elgar accepted, and Sanford made certain he was the star of the proceedings, engaging the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the College Choir, the Glee Club, the music faculty members, and New York musicians to perform two parts from Elgar's oratorio The Light of Life and, as the graduates and officials marched out, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. Elgar repaid the compliment by dedicating his Introduction and Allegro to Sanford later that year. The tune soon became de rigueur at American graduations, used primarily as a processional at the opening of the ceremony. This arrangement for soprano sax with piano is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since.The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Soprano Saxophone and Piano includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.845147). In 1849 Robert Schumann completed a set of Romantic character pieces for piano which he named Forest Scenes. One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. To be played warmly and with passion to welcome people to your Roadside Inn.
