Grant Horsley #689812. Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1085640). Aria is scored for Clarinet in E flat, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet. It is a very restful melodic piece based on a single motif heard in bar 1. Written in concert B flat major the piece is very hymn -like in design- with long notes and chords but has some unusual harmonies. The searing theme is stated then repeated with variation in texture. The theme is then developed using the rhythmic motif in the beginning climaxing in C major briefly before calmly returning to B flat major to repeat again. On this repeat more variation takes place before a restful conclusion. The top note is top B flat (C5) and I've tried to keep all parts interesting. The full score is 11 pages and parts are 3 pages each- it is roughly 5 mins 30 in length. I have set it to intermediate level but an early intermediate should be ok with some of the parts. Duration: 5:00 with optional repeat. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring Bach composed a cantata called Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Though it is the 32nd cantata, it is listed as BWV 147. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is the 10th movement of the cantata. It was customary to use previous melodies as a basis for a new work - a practice called Cantus prius factus. So, the chorale melody for this piece is a historic tune called Werde munter, mein Gemüthe. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is customarily performed at weddings and during major church seasons such as Easter and Christmas. Bach Overview First, Johann Sebastian Bach may be the greatest composer in music history. Indeed, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. People are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. His most famous vocal works seem to include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, the St. John Passion and certainly the Christmas Oratorio are the most noteworthy.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and, above all, composers. Consequently, he first pursued a career as a church organist. As a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. He worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen for a while. Here he probably developed his organ style and, likewise, his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. This new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, in addition to his complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development, his sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.

Jacaranda is a very tall tree with a purple bloom which is native to South America. This tree lines the streets of Buenos Aires which is considered by many to be the birthplace of the Argentinian Tango.This original Tango has two main sections- a passionate and animated section to begin with which clearly states the rhythms associated with the Tango, followed by a contrasting more wistful romantic middle section, which has the Cuban habanera elements present, from which a Tango is derived. Then the piece returns to the first section taking it to a conclusionJacaranda is scored for E flat Clarinet, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet and is in the key of B flat minor (concert) with the middle section in B flat major. The range is around two octaves for all players, and I have tried to keep all parts interesting with shared moments of melodic and rhythmic interest. It also has wide dynamic contrasts and heavy accents, along with legato and staccato phrasing, all of which are effectively used in this genre.It is set to Intermediate level- it is 4 mins 40 in length and would make a lovely addition to any programme.The youtube link has the full score so you can assess suitability. This brilliant work by Johann Sebastian Bach is an adaptation of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra in B minor. Bach had gotten to know Vivaldi's concertos while he was an organist at Weimar, where he transcribed ten of them for solo harpsichord and six of them for organ. Originally written in B minor, Bach transposed it to A minor and, while preserving the melodic outline as conceived by Vivaldi for four violins, this later adaptation, from around 1730, for four harpsichords and string orchestra, is far more ambitious. In it, Bach has both tightened and expanded Vivaldi's counterpoint, enriched it with lusher harmonies and expanded the solo parts with greater complexity and greater clarity. The result is a composition that actually improves on the original work. Written in the standard three-movement concerto form of the Baroque period, Bach's Concerto for Four Claviers in A minor is a virtuoso piece for the soloists. Regis Bookshar has now rearranged the first movement of this concerto, marked Allegro, for a Clarinet Quintet, while maintaining the energy and virtuosity of Bach's original work. This arrangement is intended to be performed by accomplished players and may prove to be a huge challenge for many players, but, I think, it will be worth the effort. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (41 pages). In addition to this version for 5 Clarinets, other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of Instrumental Quintets, some of which are in the original key of Concert A minor and some have been transposed to Concert G minor, making it a little easier for some performers, as well as numerous other arrangements in a wide variety of styles. I would encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. You may find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement will be a challenge to many performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come. The outer sections have strong melodic lines underpinned crisp staccato support providing a solid striding beat. The middle section (which should be played in exactly the same pulse) is more lyrical and legato featuring triplets, but still retains the underpinning crotchet beat, but with a more delicate approach for variation. After a short link passage which features a couple of time signature changes, the main theme returns with a short coda- like few bars to take the piece to a conclusion. The full score is 15 pages and the parts are 3 each. It is 4 mins 15 in length. The whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. The Clarinet Polka or A Hupfata[1] (Polish Polka Dziadek, Estonian Vanaisa polka – Grandpa Polka) is a popular musical composition from the end of the 19th century. Since 1971 it has been used as an opener in Lato z Radiem − one of the most popular shows of Polskie Radio Program I.[2] The piece, performed (as its name implies) as a polka, has a simple and catchy melody, featuring a prominent extended eight-note arpeggio. It is typically performed in B-flat major. According to Polskie Radio Program I, the music was created in Austria by a composer named A. Midnight Carousel is scored Clarinet in E flat, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet.
Midnight Carousel is in the deep rich key of concert C minor to aid to the "After Dark" mood and mystery"
The piece has two distinct ideas. After the introduction a Circus- type Waltz begins, when this is repeated it has a very haunting counter melody which is both lilting and lyrical. As the piece develops, an out of character playful Scherzo theme begins which adds some intensity and mystery surrounding the Midnight Carousel. Both Waltz and Scherzo themes exchange dialogue throughout this section as if wanting some sort of control, when suddenly two accents appear to signify a "halt" We then return to the opening theme once more to lead us to a finish. Before the conclusion however, the Scherzo theme re-instates it's ideas before the final bars!
The whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability- It has been set to intermediate level as the range is around 2 octaves with some parts less than this. Mainly Quarter and Eighth notes used throughout- therefore it would be appropriate for some early-intermediate players.
