Duration: 5:00 with optional repeat. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring Bach composed a cantata called Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Though it is the 32nd cantata, it is listed as BWV 147. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is the 10th movement of the cantata. It was customary to use previous melodies as a basis for a new work - a practice called Cantus prius factus. So, the chorale melody for this piece is a historic tune called Werde munter, mein Gemüthe. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is customarily performed at weddings and during major church seasons such as Easter and Christmas. Bach Overview First, Johann Sebastian Bach may be the greatest composer in music history. Indeed, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. People are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. His most famous vocal works seem to include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, the St. John Passion and certainly the Christmas Oratorio are the most noteworthy.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and, above all, composers. Consequently, he first pursued a career as a church organist. As a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. He worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen for a while. Here he probably developed his organ style and, likewise, his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. This new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, in addition to his complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development, his sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.

This marvelous arrangement of the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts and recitals but if you are considering using this selection for church services in which a congregation may sing along, I would suggest that you look for the arrangements of either I Vow to Thee, My Country, O God, Beyond All Praising, O Spirit All Embracing or Thaxted, also by Regis Bookshar. They are all based on the same excerpt from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets. These arrangements are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these selections as well. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (9 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions.The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Clarinet Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. There are Quintets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls This is the 1st movement of a piece for clarinet choir written by John Gibson called Klarifications. The complete is also available. This movement is set for solo Eb clarinet; Bb clarinets 1,2, and 3; 2 Alto clarinets (with alternate Bb parts); 2 Bass clarinets; Bb Contrabass clarinet (with an alternate Eb Contra Alto part). To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so. This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way. Considering the Eb clarinet part, and the need for the Bb clarinets to carry the rising staircase, this is for an advanced group. It runs a little over 3 minutes in length. The recording is computer generated, although I plan to record a live version someday.

This piece has been arranged and adapted for Clarinet Sextet, wildly ignoring the original articulation and dynamics to suit an ensemble of Clarinet technicians playing at their best!! SOLEMN DANCETypical of Scott's style, the time signature is not a constant throughout, the added articulation is meant to bring out the extraordinary harmonies he employs, a particularly lush piece best performed in a generous acoustic. FUGUEPossibly the most bizarre fugue that I've ever heard, in the original there is an Adagio beginning and coda, which is omitted here simply to get to the 'nuts and bolts' of this unusual fugue. Scott uses chromaticism in both the melody and the harmony, interspersed with soft landings, and hard tranches of vertical and horizontal passages that grow deeper and deeper. As usual the time signatures are, at times, random.Â

The music is to bring to mind pleasure in sightseeing, wandering around cafe's, seeing children at play, people dancing and laughing and families gathering in a happy relaxed atmosphere in the glorious sunshine. The piece is in Concert D flat major establishing the bright swingy rhythm, this then flows into the second section which is more lyrical and legato. A short bridge section follows keeping the motif's heard in the first section but exploring the lower registers and remains largely legato. The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind. Full score 16 pages-parts 4 pages. 4 mins 30 in length. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions.The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Clarinet Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. Si mon moine voulait danser! (Danse, mon moine, danse). The title is a play on words: moine means both monk and spinning top in French. The lyrics speak of persuading mon moine to dance by offering various articles of clothing, such as a hood or cap.After a brief, yet bold, introduction, the piece jumps into a straightforward rendition of the tune. From there, the melody is repeated, bringing in other voices and added flourishes. While the tune starts to repeat a third time, it doesn’t get to finish its full statement. It’s interrupted by a run up through the ensemble into a rollicking 7/8 section.With a rhythmic accompaniment underneath, the jaunty melody begins in the third clarinets. The upper instruments take over briefly in 6/8, then the tune returns to 7/8. After a quick breather, the accompaniment introduces an upward sweep motif. This alternates with the accompaniment pattern heard at the beginning of the 7/8 section.The lower voices then take control, driving downward into a different tonality and mood. An undulating accompaniment sets a dreamlike feel, with different voices quoting fragments of the theme. The accompaniment transfers between voices throughout the section, eventually changing back into a 3/4, then a 2/4 feel, resulting in a transition back to the original feel of the piece.The low voices get the melody, with rhythmic accompaniment and racing runs throughout the other sections. The melody goes a bit topsy-turvy before the group comes together in the descending quarter note motif from the beginning of the piece, bringing us to the coda. There’s one final quote of the opening of the main theme from the low voices, leading to a whirlwind in the first and Eb with accented notes and suspensions underneath. Most musicians will be familiar with the Tonic-Solfa ( Do Re Me etc), without boring you too much, a 'moveable' Do is the tonic of any key, a 'Fixed Do' is always a C !! In this piece Grainger employs his own 'Immovable Do', a C that is constant throughout the piece, even though it's in F!!! Now this would cause difficulties for any wind group!!! Graingers' instructions for anyone playing the melody on the Harmonium & Organ .. these notes should be stuck fast with pencils, and thus held down to the very end of the piece... So my solution is to seamlessly dovetail the C between an Eb and a Bb Clarinet, so that the fixed Do is to all intents and purposes always sounding. Graingers subtitle to the piece was ' The Cyphering C', which according to Chambers dictionary Cyphering means:- ' In an Organ, continuous sounding of a note not played, due to a mechanical failure '! The more melodic parts are a joy to listen to, with an infectious original tune, weaving between all the players.

It is a descriptive exciting piece, and the intention was to make it mysterious in style with a film-like storyline flowing through it. It has a calm intro going into a heavily syncopated driving 4 as the main theme punctuated by a heavy accented ostinato figure to add tension. The middle section is calmer and more relaxed where elements of the 1st theme appear in fragmented form. The intro returns once again before returning to the main theme which has slight modifications-extra accents etc, and the piece ends with the recurring stabs heard earlier before flourishing out. The ranges of the Clarinets are between one and a half octaves and 2 octaves depending on the part. Set at intermediate level but the full score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Ideal as a showpiece, contest/festival, concert etc or an additional piece for the repertoire. Price is for the full score and set of parts. 4 Mins 35 in length.

It is set for Eb Soprano (one player), Bb clarinet 1-2-3, 2 alto clarinets, 2 bass clarinets, and Bb Contra. This would be best in a clarinet choir with at least two on a part in the Bb clarinet section. Here is what Margaret Thornhill wrote about this piece in The Clarinet magazine, June 2017: The dramatic first movement is a dialogue between an eefer (Eb clarinet) and the rest of the ensemble, incorporating paraphrases of excepts from Bach to Bizet. It is followed by a surprising second movement chorale with slap tongue, flutter tongue and finger popping intended to be individually miked. The final movement is an exciting montuno, including a section where each person can choose which riffs to play.The 1st movement, Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so. This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way. The 2nd movement (Close Encounters with Basses) makes use of a number of unusual sounds on clarinet (or parts thereof) along with a few extended techniques that are fairly easy to play with the clear instructions provided. The altos, basses, and contra should be closely miked to be heard.The 3rd movement (Sometimes Free - A Montuno) starts off with a rich beat in the basses and gradually joined with the rest of the clarinets. In the montuno section there are 4 bar phrases each player can choose from to play during the 32 bars. They may choose what they will, either playing a different variation each time, using the same one each time, or choosing to not play for a particular 4 bar section. This is not a free improvisation, however! This is definitely for an advanced group of players. The 1st movement is also available separately. The sample recording uses Finale software in the 1st and 3rd movement, and John Gibson's recording of the 2nd movement.

When I was given the composing project of a piece especially for the Zephyr Clarinet Choir of Portland, Oregon I wanted it to be specifically identifiable as a piece for that organization. After research I discovered that an ancient Greek and Roman god was named Zephros and I decided to compose around the god's various aspects. “Zephyros in my Garden†presents aspects of the Greek and Roman god, Zephyros. He was mostly the god of the gentle west wind, but he could also be not-so-gentle and a danger to sailors. He could be a horse, too! As a musician Zephyros was known to hang out with an ensemble of swans and sing cheeky songs. movements: 1. Aspects of Zephyros 2. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (12 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Clarinet Octet, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition.
