Serenade for wind instruments, cello and double bass in D minor (Czech: Serenáda pro dechové nástroje d moll), Op. 44, B. 77, is a chamber composition by the Czech composer AntonÃn Dvořák. The work is dedicated to the music critic and composer Louis Ehlert who praised the Slavonic Dances highly in the German press.It was created in 1878, shortly after the première of the opera The Cunning Peasant, one of fifteen compositions he submitted for the Austrian State Stipendium award. The work was first heard on 17 November 1878 at a concert exclusively dedicated to Dvořák's works, with the orchestra of the Prague Provisional Theatre (Czech: ProzatÃmnÃ). The composition was performed under the composer's baton.

Published by JB Linear (A0.581881). Klarifications for Clarinet Choir is a three movement piece for a large clarinet choir. It is set for Eb Soprano (one player), Bb clarinet 1-2-3, 2 alto clarinets, 2 bass clarinets, and Bb Contra. This would be best in a clarinet choir with at least two on a part in the Bb clarinet section. Here is what Margaret Thornhill wrote about this piece in The Clarinet magazine, June 2017: The dramatic first movement is a dialogue between an eefer (Eb clarinet) and the rest of the ensemble, incorporating paraphrases of excepts from Bach to Bizet. It is followed by a surprising second movement chorale with slap tongue, flutter tongue and finger popping intended to be individually miked. The final movement is an exciting montuno, including a section where each person can choose which riffs to play.The 1st movement, Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so. This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way. The 2nd movement (Close Encounters with Basses) makes use of a number of unusual sounds on clarinet (or parts thereof) along with a few extended techniques that are fairly easy to play with the clear instructions provided. The altos, basses, and contra should be closely miked to be heard.The 3rd movement (Sometimes Free - A Montuno) starts off with a rich beat in the basses and gradually joined with the rest of the clarinets. In the montuno section there are 4 bar phrases each player can choose from to play during the 32 bars. They may choose what they will, either playing a different variation each time, using the same one each time, or choosing to not play for a particular 4 bar section. This is not a free improvisation, however! This is definitely for an advanced group of players. The 1st movement is also available separately. The sample recording uses Finale software in the 1st and 3rd movement, and John Gibson's recording of the 2nd movement.

The movements are: Buzzy Delights (Honey Bees), It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, Jaguar Surprise, and Walrus Jump.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. In his time (1837-1911) he helped found the Schola Cantorum of Paris, and served as Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatoire from 1896 until his death. His Wiki entry is an interesting read!! Oh, and don't be fooled by the gentle lilt of the first movement! 1. CHANT DU MATIN This jolly piece has a very memorable theme, with an almost Music Hall 'middle eight' section, littered with grace notes, and ends with a big 'film' finish! 2. FUGUE GRAVE Blessed with beautifully lush harmonies, and with the unusual theme based on the diminished 7th, it quite literally makes the Clarinet Quartet sing. 3. ASPIRATION RELIGIEUSE Despite the religious connotations in the title, this is an almighty vehicle for the Bass Clarinet to shine!The 3 Bb Clarinets hold a singularly static but lovely theme above, as the Bass Clarinet tumbles over the chords with relish from start to finish. A must play for your Bass player! 4. FUGHETTA IN A MINOR This is just a fantastic musical romp for 4 accomplished players! His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls This is the 1st movement of a piece for clarinet choir written by John Gibson called Klarifications. The complete is also available. This movement is set for solo Eb clarinet; Bb clarinets 1,2, and 3; 2 Alto clarinets (with alternate Bb parts); 2 Bass clarinets; Bb Contrabass clarinet (with an alternate Eb Contra Alto part). To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so. This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way. Considering the Eb clarinet part, and the need for the Bb clarinets to carry the rising staircase, this is for an advanced group. It runs a little over 3 minutes in length. The recording is computer generated, although I plan to record a live version someday.

This is the beginning of Scene 4 of the oratorio, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, after the birth of Jesus. The word pastorale in baroque music is a melody in thirds over a drone bass. Originally called Pifa, this movement was named after the shepherd bagpipers - pifferari - who used to play their instruments in the streets of Rome at Christmastime. This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for a Clarinet Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection which are readily available for a wide variety of instrumenta.

He was a priest in Italy (possibly Verona or Ferrara) and lived from about 1470 to 1521. This song Dal lecto me levava appears to have been one of the first of its kind to signal the move from the traditional frottole (which had mainly a homophonic movement, and often had just a single voice with instruments) into the more familar madrigal style, where all the lines were sung and where the movement was more contrapuntal.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1046783). In the 1910s, Gustav Holst composed the seven movement orchestral suite The Planets. The whole work is very well known but the chorale from the Jupiter movement is often considered to be one of the most well written pieces of music in the Western Classical canon. The chorale has been arranged for clarinet trio by Mark R Lewis. The arrangement is not difficult at all with most of the difficulty coming from the range that needs to be played and/or playing with musicality beyond the notes and rhythms. That said, just about any high school student and most advanced middle school students will be able to play any part. Range: F major Clarinet 1 - 2+ octaves (A3 to C6) Clarinet 2 - 1+ octaves (C4 to E5) Clarinet 3 - 1 octave (F3 to F4).
