Tango d’Elinora is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone.
This duet is written in the style of early twentieth century Tango music. Tango first appeared as in the late nineteenth century in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but it wasn’t long before the dance craze spread to North America and Europe. Performers like Carlos Gardel were the international superstars of their day. More recently the Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla and others has pushed the boundaries and ensured that Tango is still a vibrant art form today.
If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated with the first beat in the bar always strong; the melody should always flow and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Flute and Alto Saxophone Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. The linked youtube performance is the Alto Saxophone version of this duet and the repeats are omitted for brevity.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances.
