Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.

Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; Violoncello Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a Violoncello Quartet. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide students with the opportunity to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Violoncello Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; String Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a String Quartet, consisting of 2 Violins, and 2 Violoncellos. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide students with the opportunity to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. This year's Christmas publication choice fell on a song very dear to me: Hark! The herald angels sing. The text, inspired by Luke’s Gospel (2:14), appears for the first time in a collection of Christmas carols called Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739, jointly written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788 ) and George Whitefield (1714-1770), two of the founding members of the Methodist movement.The version we know today is the one adapted by William H. Cummings (1831-1915) from the section Vaterland, in deinen Gauen of the Festgesang zum Gutenbergfest, WoO 9, by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847). The story, however, is more complex and articulated than that.The original version of the text, written by Wesley, bearing the title Hymn for Christmas-Day, had received only slow and solemn music for its verses, music now almost completely discarded. Also, his original opening lines were Hark! How all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings .The version that has been passed to us is the result of alterations made by different hands, especially those of Whitefield, who changed the initial couplet into the one we know today.In 1840-one hundred years after the publication of Hymns and sacred Poems-Mendelssohn composed a cantata commemorating Johann Gutenberg’s invention of movable-type printing. The English musician William H. Cummings finally adapted Mendelssohn’s music around 1855 in order to fit the music to the verses and give it its present look.In this edition we propose the version that every listener expects to hear when reading the title on the programme and, immediately after, one of the few original versions that have reached us in their entirety, that is the one set to music by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) and available today in The British Minstrel, and Musical and Literary Miscellany, vol. 3, published in 1843.The proposed instrumentations are those of the classical string quartet and the cello quartet. Both variants are very simple to perform and are certainly suitable for small string ensembles formed in musical schools. In the cello quartet version, the only relatively complex part is that of the first cello, which should be left to the teacher or to a student able to play up to the 7th position without excessive troubles.I hope this music can bring you the serenity that made me prepare it.
