Your audiences will love the melody and harmonies. This arrangement by Donald A. Mills is for barbershop as a quartet or chorus. It is TTBB (TLBB) a cappella, sung softly, sweetly, legato, singing the four dotted quarter notes as a 3/4 time. The Beach Boys have mentioned that they wrote In My Room in 12/8 time because they had tired of the 3/4 time many songs of the day were written in. From Wikipedia, Gary Usher explained that 'In My Room found us taking our craft a little more seriously. Brian and I came back to the house one night after playing 'over-the-line' (a baseball game). I played bass and Brian was on organ. The song was written in an hour... Brian's melody all the way. The sensitivity... the concept meant a lot to him. When we finished, it was late, after our midnight curfew. In fact, Murry [the Wilson brothers' father] came in a couple of times and wanted me to leave. Anyway, we got Audree [the Wilson brothers' mother], who was putting her hair up before bed, and we played it for her. She said, 'That's the most beautiful song you've ever written.' Murry said, 'Not bad, Usher, not bad,' which was the nicest thing he ever said to me. Gary Usher (who co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Wilson) further describes that Brian was always saying that his room was his whole world. Brian seconds this opinion: I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you're not afraid when you're in your room. It's absolutely true. In 1990, Brian wrote, I also enjoyed producing 'In My Room'. There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room', there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse...and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death.

About the piece Can't Help Falling in Love is a 1961 song recorded by American singer Elvis Presley for the album Blue Hawaii (1961). It was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss and published by Gladys Music, Inc. (The melody is based on Plaisir d'amour, a popular French love song composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini). The song was initially written for a woman as Can't Help Falling in Love with Him, which explains the first and third line ending on in and sin rather than words rhyming with you. Can't Help Falling in Love was featured in Presley's 1961 film Blue Hawaii. During the following four decades, it has been recorded by numerous other artists, including Bob Dylan on his 1973 album Dylan, Tom Smothers, Swedish pop group A-Teens, and the British reggae group UB40, whose 1993 version topped the U.S. and UK charts. Elvis Presley's version of the song topped the British charts in 1962, spending four weeks at no. 1. The single is certified Platinum by the RIAA, for US sales in excess of one million copies. In the United States, the song peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 behind Joey Dee and the Starliters' Peppermint Twist and went to No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart for six weeks.About the arrangement This arrangement was inspired by the Elvis Presley version in 1962 and also the Pentatonix version recorded in 2017. It has been arranged for choirs that like to perform off by heart as the verse and chorus harmony are the same with very slight additions. The song was originally recorded by Lennon in 1979 and 1980 and released posthumously in 1988. His demo recording was completed by his former Beatles bandmates (Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr) as part of the Beatles Anthology project released in 1995. It is the last single by the Beatles to become a top 40 hit in the US, the last released record of new material credited to the Beatles, and the last to originate and be included on an album. This arrangement is faithful tribute to both versions, building on the emotional textures of the Odell version by including the additional second and third verses of the original. This arrangement is for TTBB a cappella groups, and sits at an easy-intermediate difficulty for high school/collegiate groups. While there isn’t a vocal percussionist part in the score, it is recommended to perform this arrangement with one.This arrangement features the main soloist, who sings quite lyrically and seriously (satirical, of course) about the relatable experience of FaceTiming with their parents. The echoes in the original recording are included in the score for the soloist to sing, if they wish. Additionally, the piece is relatively easy to learn, with a very repetative chord progression. As the arranger, I imagine the background vocalists miming the various lyrics that the soloist sings when they aren't looking, only for them to appear 'normal' when the soloist turns back. This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!  When my grandmother (“Mimi†to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I can’t help but think of the many times I’ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a ship’s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmother’s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey. My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. James’s beautiful lyrics perfectly capture her journey, particularly the final stanza. Mimi is known for being full of energy and abounding in love for those around her, and she never stops telling anyone who will listen about the divine light of an eternal home. –    Shelton, October 18, 2022.
