Among the most recognizable of psychological archetypes is the Self; the totality of all the characteristics,perspectives, and personal natures we can introspectively recognize as our own, and the Shadow; the collection ofrepressed traits, tendencies, and instincts with which we do not identify but nevertheless posses. While the Shadow is always present, hidden within the details of our awareness, it is rarely observable to the conscious mind.However in times of stress or personal growth the antithesis of our self image cancome boiling to the surface. And although it may seem sinister to us, exposure often reveals it as a source of creativity,inspiration, and the keeper of all the honestly simple emotions and drives that we had forgotten.This composition is a programmatic telling of the emergence and (inevitable?) return to the unconscious of the Shadow Archetype.It is also an exploration of the archetype concept itself: having both a conscious texture, and asubconscious harmonic direction. Its key structure consists of a tonal center, and two subcenters which are completetonal areas in themselves, but are nevertheless part of the greater whole. As the conflict betweenShadow and Self progresses, the intervallic distance separating these keys is altered to produce greater dissonance or consonanceas necessary to reflect the greater or lesser concord between the divergent aspects of personality.

Written with the theme of family in mind, Moonrhymes is based on nursery rhymes from different cultures. The piece is comprised of three movements (, in addition to an introduction and a finale, all played without a break): each of them focuses on a traditional song from a different origin: the English-Irish â€œDanny Boy,â€ the Latin â€œA La Nanita Nana,â€ and the Israeli-Yiddish â€œNumi Numi.â€ Â While such tunes have been sung as lullabies for many years, their lyrics are often more bleak than what might seem appropriate for bedtime. My treatment of these melodies takes them thus to mysterious, reflective, and dark places, using folk elements from various cultures.Â Moonrhymes plays with the question of what rhyming could mean in instrumental music. Â Literal rhymes feature similarities in sound between words: the endings of rhyming words usually sound identical, while the beginnings are different. Â Likewise, the themes of the piece are very similar to the original tunes, but each carries a significant musical difference in pitch, rhythm etc. Â Additionally, many moments in the piece â€œrhymeâ€ with one another: Â Accompaniment figurations reoccur while supporting different tunes (such as a repeated arrpegiated minor-7th chord), sounds and textures repeat through the piece (such as â€œglassyâ€ chordsin the violins using harmonics), and musical themes float again and again into the surface (such as the melody of â€œRock-a-bye Baby,â€ another popular lullaby that features disturbing lyrics and serves as a transition between the movements).In the finale, all tunesâ€”and culturesâ€”join together: The Yiddish-based â€œNumi Numiâ€, with its Phyrygian mode, is heard in the bass and provides the foundation for â€œDanny Boyâ€ an its iconic English-American useof the pentatonic scale, while also supporting figurations from both â€œNanitaâ€ (featuring a highly-embellished minor-scale Spanish melody) and â€œRock-a-bye Babyâ€ (whose sweet melody is disguised under darker harmonies).
