Beat it! is a piece for 7 musicians using untuned percussion. I was finding it hard to find ensemble pieces for mixed ability groups so decided to write my own. Within the piece you will find parts suitable for very new players alongside some for the more experienced musicians. The instruments involved should be easy to find in most band room environments but, as the parts are all non-melodic, they lend themselves easily to replacement instruments and duplicating parts for additional players. There is a strong focus on groove and interplay between musicians, perfect for developing cohesion in your ensemble. The piece has been well received in national festivals within the UK.

In GRAVITY I explored different gravities as forces we not only feel them in every moments of our lives, but also thinking of living without or escaping from them seems impossible. Likewise, those gravities exist in the music, make us feel the music continuous, desirable, logical and an integrated language of art. The exploration of the path from chaos to unity, and from unity to multiplicity, is where the title came from. GRAVITY consists of two main sections. The first section, which shows the fully-grown and flourished musical ecosystem, and the second part; a flashback to just after big-bang, which tries to musicalize the creation of the gravity! In the first section, I’ve used the concept of horizontal and vertical minimalism. At the very beginning of the piece we have a structure that bring the idea of the vertical minimalism out. In every moment, each instrument plays the same note as others. However, the narrative line is divided into different octaves, so, the melody is not the same in spite of the fact that each instrument plays the same tone. This structure also reminds the paradoxical ladder or optical staircase illusion. The narration is built up until it reaches temporal climax. At the same time, this melody starts again from the beginning with some microscopic differences visible vividly to musicians. This semi reciprocating musical narration, could be observed as a musical example of the staircase illusion. After this part, but still in the first section of the music, I’ve used the horizontal (traditional) minimalism idioms to explore the bounding forces present in the music. Although, what interesting here is the creation of synthetic voices which is the result of different amounts of the nuances and different combinations of the sound. For keen ears, it seems like shades of neon lights, penetrate into one another in the scale of time and create a big picture of micro fluctuating objects. Here, we don’t have melody, rhythm, structure, narration and other aspects of the music in the traditional way, although all of them are present in the music. very single sound or noise is meaningful and showing the assemblage process of the forces in the music to create a melody line. I’ve occupied idioms of contemporary Sonorism genre to create the atmosphere. This highly complex texture shows the virtuosity of interpreters and the capability of the instruments in avant-garde literature and extended techniques. The music is concluded by a fast-tempo finale, with the instruction of fortissimo possiblile (as loud as possible). The piece, in fact, will not be finished as a morendo, but, it opens a space for hypothetically living structure; constantly grows, flourishes, shines and decays.

This section then breaks apart to where each instrument has a solo. Then the solos are combined before it returns to the original rhythm with a different chord. The arrangement allows flexibility, so this piece can be performed using tuned bottles (25cl, 33cl and 75cl), lip whistle, finger snaps, complemented with xylophones and optionally with voices to sing the lyrics too. This arrangement was made during the 2020 quarantine, when the world was shutdown due to a world virus pandemic. Some of the music students didn’t have their music instruments at home, so this arrangement came up to fill that gap and it is perfect to keep doing music with the available option of instruments.On each rehearsal letter, you can play optional improvisations, while keeping the voices 5-8. These improvisations can be easily done using the C major pentatonic scale or the note ranges presented on the right, that even include Eâ™ and Bâ™. If played using lip whistle, bendings will be possible too. This arrangement presents 8 voices and an alternative solution for voice 8, that makes it easier to be performed as it is the place where bottles are divided between the players. There is also an optional bass line to complement voice eight one octave bellow. In order to keep it simple, neither dynamics or articulations were included and the notes were represented always in the middle octave in G clef. The correct pitch ranges are presented in the performance notes.The amount of water will change the pitch differently depending if you are blowing or doing percussion on a bottle. When blowing, the more water you use, the higher the pitch will be, but while doing percussions more water means lower pitch. A good option, in order to save time during rehearsals, is to fill the bottles with water, marking the level with a pen, and then filling the bottle with the desired amount of hot wax instead of water. This way, when the wax cools down you can have a tuned bottle without requiring to tune it again every single rehearsal. Please note that the bottles should be made of glass and that different aspects change the performance. For percussion, straight bottles are better to tune as the curves in the bottles tend to produce unstable pitches. The extreme notes of the range might not be available in every single bottle, so you might need to try some alternatives. For example the high A is available in some beer bottles, while the low G is available in larger 75cl bottles of champaign. The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. Silent Night Prelude for Percussion Octet arr. by Dan Heslink This work is based on the well-loved Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber. This theme is so popular that it was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. And the version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935 is the fourth best-selling single recording of all-time. It’s sure to motivate your audience close to Christmas. The Prelude begins with a brisk tempo. Although notated in 3, as is customary in more modern renditions (the original theme was notated in 6), the tempo must be fast enough that two measures of 3 create a binary pairing (like 6/4 in two). It may be necessary to slightly slow down the roll speed to avoid a frenetic sound. The difficulty level is easy. There are no changes of key, and the timpani part requires only two drums (Bb, F) with no tuning changes. The vibe part could be played with two mallets, but might execute more comfortably with three. The other keyboard parts use only two mallets each. The expression of this beautiful tune will be greatly enhanced by exaggerating the contrasts of dynamics. Accompaniment and ornamental figures must at all times be sublimated to the familiar theme. At the last strain, players should sing the well-known words in order to lead the audience or congregation in group singing. It would be helpful for the conductor to turn and face the audience at this point. This closing passage may be repeated for any number of sung verses. Use a smooth, relaxed stroke to elicit as much legato as possible. At points a continuous arpeggio accompaniment is divided among the instruments. Care must be taken to keep the sixteenth note speed consistent. The opening runs should be performed half-pedal on the vibes for clarity. I wrote Nuevo-Nueve for an ensemble of nine new first-time percussion students. Nuevo meaning new or different, and Nueve meaning nine, seemed to be a good title for the piece. Going along with the concept of nine, the song is written in nine bar phrases and has a total of 99 measures as well. It uses simple and repetitive patterns to introduce students to the instruments that are utilized in the piece. Out of the nine students that I originally wrote it for, six were wind players and the other three had never read music. They had great success with it (and a lot of fun, too!). The first four parts are all listed as generic mallet parts, and all work pretty well with whatever mallet instruments that you have available. Part 3 and 4 double each other, but part 4 is in bass clef. They are written on the same sheet. If you have the equipment for it, I recommend the following instrumentation: Part 1: bells or marimba Part 2: vibraphone Part 3: marimba Part 4: (optional, bass clef, doubles part 3): bass guitar, keyboard, or mallet controller Part 5: hi-hat cymbal, suspended cymbal, mounted tambourine Part 6: guiro, castanets, maracas, two pitched toms Part 7: drum set Part 8: suspended cymbal, china cymbal, splash cymbal, triangle Part 9: concert bass drum, cabasaBe sure to check out my other small ensemble arrangements here on Sheet Music Plus, and thanks for taking a look!

It harkens to an era when steel pans were hung around the neck and marched through the streets.I wasn't there, then, but this song is how I imagine a steel band would sound marching through the streets. The sound is faint at first, but soon the neighborhood is filled with the unmistakable rhythm and soaring melodies of the steel band.

Because her ‘English’ name, Sansan, sounds like the number 33 in Mandarin Chinese, the piece is based on the numbers 3, 33 and various multiples of them. The numbers were used to shape all aspects of the music, but in performance the piece still flows simply and naturally. It is technically not difficult for performers, but they do need good ears for color and balance, and they must work carefully as an ensemble. The Devil's Rag is a fun little xylophone rag based on some of the famous Green brothers' rags that really made xylophone literature catch on. This is more advanced and requires some quick hands, but is really entertaining to play and listen to. It is mostly in C minor, but plays in C major as well to depict the xylophone player trying to entertain the devil while keeping their own sanity. The player is the jester of the underground, making some interesting music and harmony while keeping rhythmic ideas quick and steady. Truly a joy to play. The inspiration for the piece comes from Latin American folklore “mal de ojo†which is essentially staring or looking on someone with envy or praising them without touching them. It is believed that your spirit will haunt the person you’ve looked at with a desire to touch but didn’t. This is the goal of the piece; to keep the audience engaged throughout the work with quick passages, rhythmic variety, and timbre changes, giving the performers ojo because there is no other option but to watch and listen intently.
