Premiered at Colorado State University, October 16, 2016.It is common knowledge that the universe we see is composed of tiny particles known as atoms. For much of scientific history, it was thought that atoms were made up of three indivisible particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.Thanks to contemporary advances in physics, we now know that these particles are, in fact, made up of much smaller particles and that these constituents sometimes behave in ways that confound what we thought we knew of the physical universe.In this piece, I have portrayed one type of these subatomic particles, the quark. There are six types (or flavors) of quark: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. These are differentiated by the type of charge they carry and their masses.The first movement is Strange Quark. This flavor has a negative charge and is relatively light. Much like the particle, this movement often behaves in unusual ways.Top Quark, the second movement, portrays the quark flavor that is by far the heaviest. Slow and massive, this particle allowed for the study of the famous Higgs boson.The final movement, Up Quark, is light and decays quickly, much like this particle that contributes to both protons and neutrons.The universe is indeed a wonder to behold and its scale is hardly comprehensible to the human mind. And yet, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there exists an entire universe yet to uncover in the most infinitesimal pieces of matter. Guy de Maupassant was a French writer, remembered as a master of the short story. It has been suggested that the word horla is a blending of the French words hors (outside) and là (there) and the title can be interpreted as the what’s out there. Percussion: Wind wand or bullroarer and two guiros (or similar). Players read from the score. Narrator cues are shown in the score in boxed text and below in square brackets. Each note added continues until a complete musical composition is formed. But it doesn't stop there. Once the composition is formed it progresses to a solemn, smooth 5/4 section. This section then breaks apart to where each instrument has a solo. Then the solos are combined before it returns to the original rhythm with a different chord. The piano part is there for support and filling in. Not a difficult piece and very repetitive and catchy. I have arranged this piece for a school orchestra made up of pupils of grades 1-3. I suggest a solo for the first 4 bars (I did with a recorder). At F there is a ‘jazz’ style solo. Choose your instrument. Once I did with a recorder. A second time with a trumpet. Beware you won’t get the tune out of your head!!

Power Line: for 2 or More Energetic Percussionists is a two part ensemble for first year percussionist.  Performed on a drum pad, the work explores the sound a percussionist can make by playing on the head and rim of the pad and the metal stand on which the pad sits, and stick clicks  In addition, there are also vocal effects.  The performs say tzzzz imitating the sound or an electrical arc.  Rhythms include quarter note and eighth note patterns and a few instances of four sixteenth notes grouped into one beat (1e&a).  The performs are also asked to play flams, paradiddles and multi bounce rolls.  Finally there is a small section which features a drum to drum section where the performers will play on the pads on each side of the performer.  This is a fun and exciting work for your first year percussionist!  Enjoy!

The drama was based on an extremely touching story about a lady named Doue E, and was written by the author Guan Hanqing during the Yuan Dynasty. It is divided into three sections in a cyclic form, with one theme. The instrumentation includes voices for male and female, suona (Chinese cornet), there are more than ten traditional Chinese percussions are used, such as the wind gong, large and small luo (as used in Beijing opera), and the Chinese clapper, Paiban. The sound of suona indicates the lady Dou E with her battle cry and strong faith. The music begins after lady Dou E’s faint narrative. ※The Lament of Tou-Ehr was commissioned by the Neo Classical Music Group. The dance was arranged by Fon-xuei Liu, with orchestra and chorus conducted by the composer, Shui-long Ma himself. The music is presented as a performing score. Where no clef is given, play with as if with a clef as directed in the score text (see Minute two). Transposing instruments play as written and do not transpose. It is allowed, however, for special transposed parts to be created in order to ensure an even distribution of the intended chordal harmony where this would otherwise be missing. There should be a few seconds silence between each of the four sections. During Minute one players other than the soloist strum their fingers rapidly on the body of their instruments, chairs etc., very quietly - producing an almost imperceptible dull sound (not 'tinny' or 'bright'). Programme Note: 'Four Minutes - Four Daydreams' was composed by Paul Burnell in 2000. The moving bass line will surely sound solid and the cellos and double seconds will have a fun time with the short features they get in the transition sections of the piece. In the middle, there is a false ending, which starts the beginning over again and plays a modified finale (Hence the Start Over Soca).
