Rather, it is the especially toned-down but still rhythmic commercial variant popularized by folk singers. Couched in this style, the arrangement offers Christmas favorites Deck the Halls, Angels We Have Heard On High, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Good Christian Men, Rejoice. This if one of two versions of the calypso arrangement by Dan Heslink, both of which are available through Sheet Music Plus. The other arrangement, percussion sextet, follows similar musical contours and is available separately. Both versions are intended to elicit one primary response from both performers and audience – fun. It does not tax the players technically, but delivers a satisfying sound with carols that the performers likely know and love. General audiences will be enchanted by the familiar melodies delivered in percussion, especially at Christmas time. The introduction opens with a brisk and rhythmic introduction based on Deck the Halls, and establishes the fun calypso rhythm immediately. The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewelry offered by Mydas is also turned into stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.

American composer, James Nathaniel Holland, brings a ballet adapted from the first century Roman novel by Gaius Petronius (cir. 50 A.D.) to the stage. An entertaining ballet for adults (not suitable for general audiences under the age of 18), celebrating the male ballet dancer's physique and a laugh at our own human sexuality. The comedy is a romp of three gay protagonists and their adventures and misadventure in ancient Rome and their characters; an ex-gladiator, Enclopius, his young lover, Giton, and an upper class snob, Ascyltos. It should also be said that this ballet is not pure gratuitous vulgarity, there is a interweaving story containing a deeper message of real human relationships, the satire of ancient Roman archetypes, and a humorous glimpse into ancient Roman life that still rings true even 2,000 plus years later. Regardless of the subject matter, Holland's original music is fantastic tapestry of counterpoint, set in a sort of atonal-ism and heavy percussion, evoking a period of history no longer available to us. Although not all cues and counterpoint is contained here, this piano score is extremely useful for either a performance with 2 pianos and percussion and a dance company, a director's/choreographer's score, or a concise conductor's score, or rehearsal score. Measure numbers line up with the full score. An orchestral, performance CD is available for those company's on a budget.

Celebrations is a mixed percussion ensemble octet utilizing both keyboard and non keyboard percussion instruments. It was written in memory of Ohio Band Director, Dan Meeks. In life we celebrate many occasions: birthdays, holidays, vacations, winning seasons, winning the lottery, anniversaries, marriages and births, just to name a few. But at times of loss we can also celebrate those who have left an indelible mark on us. Parents, mentors and teachers fit into this category. This piece is written to celebrate learning and though who guided us on our path. Specifically this piece is dedicated in memory of Dan Meeks, a teacher, band director, percussionist, husband and dad who touched so many lives teaching and guiding his family, friends and students through part of their lives. We are forever in debt to people like Dan and celebrate them. Dan would often say, Just Have Fun! This piece is written with that joy and love of life in mind. Thanks Dan, you always made it fun. Leads include soprano, mezzo soprano, tenor, and bass with chorus, Asian dance and minor roles. One of the few operas with a love duet between a soprano and bass. Great ensemble scenes. Great for university productions and young voices. Dramatic and beautiful orchestration.
