Nadir (1994) is written for prepared guitar, a term usually associated with a piano in which certain objects have been placed on the strings in order to alter the conventional sound of the instrument. Many composers have written music for prepared piano, among them John Cage, who, according to Mr. Paraskevas, was the inspiration for his transferring of the same technique to the guitar. It is quite possible that nobody has used this kind of technique on the guitar before. After experimenting with various materials, he decided on the use of two metal paper clips, which he puts at specific locations on the fingerboard, so that they best produce the desired sound effect, a sound both harmonic and percussive. Nadir suggests the lowest point, here associated with the notion of death. The piece bears many programmatic references to the struggle between good and evil, life and death, musically portrayed in the persistent ostinato rhythms and the fragmented melodic phrases. Death cuts through in the form of an abrupt strike on the wood, the fingers continue to play but no sound is heard, until two more strikes make their movement stop. Little by little life and sound start again, but the final strike brings about the pessimistic message that fate and death predominate in the end. The piece ends with the inscription ...but sooner or later we live forever - a final optimistic touch. Nadir was the outcome of continuous experimentation on the capabilities of the guitar as an instrument, and all the potential sound effects that one can draw from it. ...Dr. Paraskevas, is an amazingly versatile guitarist. He conquers the many technical challenges of this repertoire with ease, he can sing with the purest tone (try the opening work, Alfonsina y el Mar, and see). What makes Visions of Azure a wonderful guitar CD rather than simply a good one is the last 18 minutes. The guitarist saves his own compositions for last, and if the ear is fatigued at this point in the recital. Paraskevas gives it good reason to wake up....I am sold on Paraskevas's playing, and do not think hunting down the alternatives is necessary. In short, this is an essential CD for those interested in modern classical guitar.

These two pieces; Vista Point and Squirrel Creek were inspired by hiking destinations in the mountains of Colorado, to two foundation ruins of lodges built in the 1920s, then later burned down. My thought was that there was surely a piano in these lodges and Scott Joplin pieces were likely among the repertoire of the pianists of that era. Guitar Sonata No. 5 in G major is open G tuning. It is in three movements and performance time is abut 10 to 10:15. Movements 1 and 3 are to be played using a glass or bronze slide worn on the fourth finger. The movements are:1. Hobo Spider Blues2. Ragged) and Sor(e) (after Sor's Op. 29, 10)3. Ricardo de YakimaThe first movement is a set of bottleneck technique variations on an original blues theme. Each variation explores different timbrel possibilities such as ordinary tone, pizzicato, sul tasto, and ponticello before recapitulating the original form of the blues theme.The second movement reconceives Sor's study in E flat from his Op. 29 as a ragtime sonata form, with a developmental intrusion from another Sor etude. This ragtime sonata leads attaca into the final movement.The third movement is another set of variations, this time on a two-step dance theme cast in the form of a menuet. It was common in early 19th century guitar sonatas to end with a menuet and so I opted to end with a menuet with variations. In sharp contrast to my first guitar sonata, which drew inspiration from late Beethoven piano sonatas and late Shostakovich string quartets, the inspirations here were Muddy Waters, Fernando Sor, Scott Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Don Helms.This sonata was also recorded by Daniel Estrem on Estrem Plays Lawson, which was released through Magnatune in 2016. .

The work draws on original and early piano editions as well as the first guitar transcription made by Severino GarciÌa Fortea who introduced key innovations familiar to most classical guitarists. Guitarists are encouraged to use this arrangement in consultation with the transcriptions by GarciÌa Fortea, AndreÌs Segovia, and Stanley Yates. Asturias is known for its abrupt chord interruptions which gives it its distinctive character. In the original, less well known, transcription for guitar by GarciÌa Fortea, these were plucked with the thumb and three fingers simultaneously. Segovia expanded the chord to a full six strings which is strummed. This six-string variation is now adopted as standard in nearly all classical guitar versions and the work of GarciÌa Fortea has all but been forgotten. Stanley Yates was aware of GarciÌa’s version, though seems to have been misdirected by Segovia and did not appear to get hold of GarciÌa’s work before making his own transcription. A key difference between the piano versions and guitar versions is the fact that the pedal note is missing immediately following the chords played on the first notes of the bar. This seems to be a pragmatic decision made due to the technical challenge of articulating a chord on the guitar and then immediately following up with a pedal note. It may have been also a decision to more strongly emphasise the chord. However, the composer clearly indicated that the chord should be as short as all of the other notes and hence it is reasonable to strike the chord and immediately lose it and start the pedal note.
