You can find a performance on YouTube.My scores are intentionally devoid of expressive and dynamic markings (even tempo indications). Dynamics and other markings not only seem crude to me, but also imply there is just one interpretation of the piece. There should be significant development of dynamics, tempo and colour within my pieces, but I leave this up to the interpretation of the player.Notwithstanding the above, my fingerings are important. My pieces are 'guitaristic' in that certain notes need to be played at specific places on the fretboard in order to exploit resonances or harmonies only available when playing them there.

Trapped by something you can’t fully understand no matter how hard you try? We work hard to try and propel ourselves out of this nightmare, but we never seem to get totally free, in fact sometimes it feels like we’re just making ourselves feel worse by failing to overcome it yet again. This piece, ...a bridge a-way, exits within, represents that feedback loop, that stuckness. The piece came to me when I felt stuck in life by several things - old scars, old habits, crippling emotions. I had been wanting to write something in a minimalist style for the guitar for quite some time and the repetition found in so much minimalist music seemed like the obvious way for expressing this stuckness. There’s constant motion in the piece, just like when we try to take constant action in our lives to improve our circumstances. But all this motion never seems to get us anywhere new. We’re spinning our wheels…But one of the interesting things about great minimalist music is that it’s not merely about repetition. I don’t believe the greatest minimalists were concerned with having less stuff in their music for the sake of having less. Instead, what I think they more often aimed for was producing the biggest emotional impact that they could through the tiniest of changes. And if in your mind’s eye you zoom out from one of these minimalist masterworks and perceive it on a grand scale, you realize that despite all the seemingly redundant repetition in the moment the piece actually covers a huge distance because all those tiny changes add up.Likewise, in ...a bridge a-way, exits within, it seems like the performer can’t free himself from the territory of the first position on the guitar for the longest time. Even when he does venture higher up the instrument he’s always inextricably pulled back to the starting point. But small changes can have a profound impact.It doesn’t feel like we’re making headway whenever we’re having to crawl out of our skin - until, suddenly, when it’s all over. And you hear this towards the end of the piece, when there’s a sudden magnetic force that pulls the music from a low A to a high E-natural. From A to E, a bridge to exits eternal. The bridge has been found within, in the One I’ve put my trust in, because I can’t reach my eternal destiny on my own. This is ...a bridge a-way, exits within.

The D7 is a slight key change because it has an F# in the chord. It's a secodary dominace chord, V7/V, and often a vii7b5 can replace it. In other words, the F# goes gravitates into the next chord, a G Major chord.4. G6 is really just the 3 thinnest strings of the guitar open. It's a great transition chord.5. The D# is part of the C major blues scale.6. Adding more 7th chords than originally there is almost always an interesting pursuit. Going from G to G7 can certainly aid in helping things sound more goofy.

Some pieces are written in a homorhythmic manner and can constitute an introduction to ensemble music, while others are rather polyrhythmic. They can constitute a first contact with the following techniques and effects: staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, natural harmonic, percussion or crossed strings. This volume is therefore intended for guitarists who already know the notes in first position. Two pieces include a more advanced part with an introduction to playing in 5th position. These are short pieces that do not present technical challenges other than those allowing you to achieve the effects and play expressively.You will find in the scores indications of nuances, timbre, attack and fingerings which constitute suggestions for work and not prescriptions. Teachers and students are therefore invited to make interpretation choices different from those proposed or to try to convincingly render those already written.The pieces were composed or arranged by UQAM music education students as part of a course aimed at equipping musicians for teaching guitar in the school system. I offer an arrangement of Bach’s all-time favourite Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring in an African inspired rendering for solo classical or acoustic guitar. The arrangement uses lots of natural harmonics in an attempt to mimic the African kalimba style of music. The arrangement goes in 4/4 time in polyrhythm with a second tier of accents at 2, 2&, and 4 with a slight swing. The polyrhythm makes the final chord sound like an upbeat! The low bases are notated as quarter notes and should be played so that they do not ring out. They are not muted (staccato), except where notated, but they should be kept short to give the piece a bouncy character.The arrangement contains the main melody and chorus sections of the original in G major, although I have changed the original in a number of ways. The first melody and chorus section in G major is prefaced by several bars of natural harmonics and is repeated only after the melody and chorus section in the key of A minor. Natural harmonics appear in many places in the piece interwoven with Bach’s original melody and chorus. I think the natural harmonics give the piece a really glorious ring. The present arrangement incorporates many sections of a sister arrangement of the piece that I published recently that follows the original more closely and works as an introduction to the music with extensive left and right hand fingerings and tablature for intermediate students of guitar. This arrangement, considering the many natural harmonics, staccatos, tempo, and swing, is perhaps better suited for advanced intermediate students of classical or acoustic guitar. With that in mind, I therefore refrain from any extensive left and right hand fingerings for the present arrangement. The piece is a real joy to play and listen to! The tempo for the present arrangement has been set to 140 bpm. I think the pace gives a real swing to the music. The piece may however be played at a faster tempo, e.g. Presto, or somewhere in between. With this great music you can hardly go wrong.The title I have chosen for the arrangement aims to be a play on words as in many English speaking parts of the world the name Bach often rhymes with the word ‘back’ as in a return to some place or time. ‘Bach to Africa’ is then an allusion to humanity’s primordial roots in Africa. Rejoice!

The arrangement is in the ragtime style of guitar playing reminiscent of Reverend Gary Davis. The melody is played with alternating middle, index, and ring fingers over alternating bases played by the thumb. The melody is repeated in different major keys starting in the key of D and moving through the keys of A , G, and C, returning at the end to D.The arrangement is intended as a fun instructional introduction to the various keys that are good for fingerstyle guitar with alternating bases in normal tuning. There are lots of little ornamentations like pulls-offs, slurs, and trills that liven up the piece and are good practice for the intermediate to advanced student of fingerstyle guitar.I have given Presto as the tempo as that is the tempo in which I first conceived of the arrangement, but the piece can also be played at a slower tempo, i.e. Allegro.In a number of instances in the notation harmonics are marked as sounding one or two octaves higher than notated. These notes are notated and tabulated at the position they are to be found on the fretboard. When played as harmonics they will sound one or two octaves higher.The piece would I think work well also in contexts where the guitarist might like to have some audience participation in the way of hand-clapping of the beat while moving through the various key changes. The piece also works well as a warm-up. I really enjoy playing the piece. It makes my day!

We often live our lives hiding from ourselves, usually because of an artificial sense of fear, embarassment, shame or guilt that we may have acquired because of social pressures. This is why we many people have a mid-life crisis and suddenly change the way they have lived their lives into how they wished to live all along. This piece represents the unraveling of previously held ideals into one which is synchronous with the world around us, beginning with a vision reminding us of mortality, progressing through the difficulties and cognitive dissonances which occur when we must change our lives to find happiness. Kriya began originally as a tremolo etude on the 2nd and 3rd strings, but quickly evolved into a musical composition. Practicing Tremolo on strings other than the first develops control and discipline in the right hand, which was my original intention in writing it- but I felt as if the material that was generated required more and more variation and contrast- and quite quickly I realized that I had to complete it with the intention of performing it as a piece of music rather than simply a technical exercise.**This version is for 10-string guitar. There is a 6-string guitar version available also.

Some of these are new works, some have been re-worked from older ideas. They all incorporate the idea of popular rock style guitar music being combined with standard classical guitar technique and notation.Andante Tremolo creates an eerie yet nostalgic mood with a sixteenth note tremolo figure at the beginning that bursts into a middle section utilizing pull offs to open strings and a more rapid tremolo. It features a descending melodic figure that leads to nowhere... Anniversary Theme is a half-remembered hum-along melody at the end of the formal celebration when the chairs are being put away but the decorations are still up. It uses simple harmonies that don't really make sense but just follow that same half-forgotten melody, cadencing here and there when they feel like it. Cloudburst Arpeggio focuses on the chime-like campanella effect produced by a descending slur pulled-off to an open string, and then hammering it back on again. It begins with a straight-ahead arpeggio pattern going through a standard chord change, and then jumps off the edge of the cliff into other areas...Mobile is a perpetual motion machine that rocks its way into an Arabic sounding riff in the middle. The low D tuning allows utilization of a drone on the high open D string that produces interesting sonic effects allowing for unique sounds to pull off to open strings.

PREFACE AND BRIEF ANALYTICAL NOTESThe three sonatinas op.71 by Mauro Giuliani in C, G, and D were first published in 1816 in Vienna and were intended as student pieces of progressive difficulty. In parallel with this intention they are also fully developed three-movement works which reveal Giulianiâ??s technique as a composer with harmony, counterpoint, and structure.They certainly have the time length and the variety of full scale sonatas, but here Giuliani has chosen to use the supporting structures of sonatas met in movements other than the first, such as Menuetto and Trio, Rondo, Marcia and Trio, Scherzo and Trio, etc,  rather than sonata form itself.As it stands, this first sonatina in C has the following three movements:1 Maestoso (Moderato) which is a set of a theme and three variations, or better termed as a set of mathematical divisions reminiscent of an earlier era, as the accompaniment of the theme is given in crotchets, quavers, quaver triplets, and semi-quavers.2 Menuetto-Trio-Menuetto da capo written typically in the subdominant key of F and fully developed as per classical 19th century usage.3 Rondo. This movement is also written in a classical rondo style and form as an A-B-A-C-B-A-codetta  structure, with a typical tonal scheme of A in the tonic Key (C), B in the dominant key (G), and C in the relative minor key (Am).Therefore in this work we do not meet with structural innovations of any kind, but with strong affirmation of already existing and well established early 19th century structural norms, but the beautiful personal melodic and harmonic style of Giuliani and even his routine guitaristic nuances and formulas are present in all three movements and can be enjoyed as always.TECHNICALThis publication keeps each separate movement within the limit of two pages, thus avoiding page turns. It is published with two versions of the same pieces given in undecorated and decorated pages for the user to select which version he prefers to print out. Here are a few pieces just as they appear in his manuscript (transcribed only). The simple charm of Sanz' music is maintained and therefore they remain accessible to guitarists of modest ability; the ornaments are from Sanz' manuscript.
