Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.1070388). Mountains of Stowe, 2015 is a two-movement piece commissioned by and dedicated to guitarist Adam Holzman. The first movement I Stand Strong reflects the serenity and isolation someone might feel when surrounded by the mountains of Stowe, Vermont in the U.S.A. The second movement …and the Sky is the Limit written in an ABA cyclic form is full of rhythmic gestures starting with the combination of 7/8, 2/4, 5/8 and 3/4 in the first four measures that leads to a slow movement as an attempt to sing a Greek song in those vast territories and to portray the thankfulness of being there and experience the presence of the amazing beauty of it. When asked why he commissioned this piece, Holzman replied, My wife and I spend our summers in Stowe. We love being there, celebrate the summer and spend time outside. We have family and friends who come and share a few days with us and Apostolos is a dear friend who has been coming for several years. We talked about the possibility of him writing a piece that reflected Stowe and the mountains. When asked about the piece, Paraskevas responded, I always write music for the person behind the instrument, so while composing every note of this piece I had Adam in my mind; the way he plays, the way he breathes the way he lives his life. The work is written for the mountains of Stowe through Adam’s eyes and heart and I am the vehicle who translates it.

He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuosoconcert guitarist.He moved to Germany in 1810, gaining almost immediate success. In 1815, he was living in Paris, earning his living as a teacher of both the piano and the guitar. On a concert tour in Germany in 1819, he met his friend Antoine Meissonnier for the first time. Also a famous guitarist, Meissonnier published many of Carcassi's works in his Paris publishing house. For Meissonnier he also arranged a number of popular songs for guitar that were originally written for piano, including works by Théodore Labarre and Loïsa Puget.From 1820 on, Carcassi spent the majority of his time in Paris. In 1823, he performed an extremely successful series of concerts in London that earned him great fame, both as a performing artist and as a teacher. However, in Paris, a long time passed before his talents were truly recognized, partly because of the presence of Ferdinando Carulli.Carcassi was in Germany again during autumn 1824. Afterwards he performed in London, where his reputation now gave him access to more prestigious concert halls. Finally he returned to Paris. For several years, he made concert trips from here to the most important cultural towns of Europe, including London. In the second century AD, Artemidoro de Daldis (135-200), a very cultured man who had traveled a lot, contemporary of Emperor Marco Aurelio, wrote in Ephesus his work Symbolism of Dreams (Oneirocritica). In it he tried to create a systematic theory for the interpretation of dreams, based on experience. Artemidoro claimed that he had written his work in five volumes by express order of the god Apollo, who had appeared several times in his dreams. In his fascinating book he distinguishes five kinds of dreams: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. Artemidoro’s book, Op. 63, is a work for guitar in five movements, which take their titles as the kinds of dreams mentioned above: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. It is an extensive composition, 19 minutes long, and with a great variety of compositional and instrumental techniques: the performer, who is asked for a lot of versatility and imagination, has to play glissandi, harmonics, pizzicati, bells, loops, metric modulations, ordinary and muted strokes, microtones, distortions, various kinds of bumps in the box, etc. The five movements share a special scordature and the same melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material, which is transformed according to the dreamlike atmosphere of the piece, but always maintaining each of the structural elements a recognizable identity. The multiple presences of these essential identities throughout the work articulate the complex form of the Book. I finished the composition of The Book of Artemidoro on April 24, 2006. The work is dedicated to guitarist José Guerola, who premiered it at the Vivanco Palace in Catarroja (Spain), on May 5, 2006.
