A tip of the hat to Stravinsky's Three Pieces,  this and my String Trio (also 2001) I see now as my last 20th Century composition.  Not only was the 20th century over, but these two were the last to fit the 20th century, avant-garde ethos.  By 2003, I'd already begun to move away from most of the Western European Art Music tradition.1. Dance2. Verset3. RantMusic for Solo Clarinet was written in the fall of 2001. These were spontaneous, uncommissioned, un-requested works that seemed to come from nowhere. But looking back, I see that they encapsulate a lot of what I was feeling (what everyone was feeling) in the fall of 2001: confusion, sadness, anger, disappointment... Each movement features one of the three primary ‘colors’ produced by the three different registers of the clarinet, and each is a sonata-allegro form, where tiny gestural figures are used as themes.

This electronically-accompanied clarinet piece is built entirely upon a singular group of four notes (or set) which is called the alpha set. It is categorized with the numbers (0, 3, 4, 7), which create a triad with both a major and a minor third when played together. The sound it creates is quite dissonant but is eerily beautiful. The electronic backing track draws techniques from the composer's early roots creating synthetic boss-battle music. Rainer's Rainbow #6404467. Published by Rainer's Rainbow (A0.902125). Bach wrote this Tocata & Fugue for Organ sometime in the years between 1730 and 1740. It wasn't published until the mid 19th century at the behest of Felix Mendelssohn. It is perhaps one of the most recognizable pieces for Organ. However, it is also one of the most often arranged themes. I have written it here for the first time for a single woodwind (Clarinet) and changed the barlines and time signatures, but melody is the same. I have also transposed for various harmony clarinets so it can be used as a technical study.

He wrote his 30 Caprices for a flautist friend in 1918 and they have since become standard etudes for flute students. With some editing as to range and technical issues arising between the flute and the clarinet, they also work well for clarinet. There were three caprices omitted in this edition since they were unsuitable for clarinet (#18, 23, 28). The clarinetist will find these caprices challenging and instructive. One should note that the convention of accidentals only effecting the note in the octave in which it is first played is usually marked in this edition, and the player should be aware that this is the case throughout. - John Gibson, editor

Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018927). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.
