Published by Juliettamusic (A0.867175). The ice covered Europa is one of the principle moons of Jupiter. The sound world, which is meant to evoke this frigid environment, is created by using the high registers of both the clarinet and piano and by using square, metrical, brittle rhythms. In the first two movements, motives, and sometimes entire sections, are repeated in retrograde or inversion to further enhance this image of reflective ice. There is a progression from atonal writing which contains many chromatic passages in the first movements to more modal writing in the last movements. This narrowing of pitch material is intended to evoke a movement from the impersonal to the personal. The poetic idea behind the piece begins with an image of a moon in complete isolation which then makes a connection with the distant stars, and then the not so distant clouds surrounding the giant Jupiter which hangs heavily in its sky, and finally with an inward awakening of oceans which could be filled with life beneath the surface of ice. This intended for performers with an advanced level of skill.

The poem was published as part of his Irish Melodies collection between 1807 and 1834 and later set to music by fellow Irishman John Stevenson. The song gained widespread popularity and was incorporated into the opera Martha by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, which premiered in 1847 in Vienna.This sheet music has been adapted for solo instrument, preserving the original melody by Moore and Stevenson in its essence. This edition of the solo clarinet part of the Artie Shaw Concerto for Clarinet is a note for note transcription of what Shaw recorded on the record version and in the motion picture.Shaw’s solos as played in both the motion picture and record version are represented in great detail with the film solo shown as ossia so the player can view and choose which they might prefer to play. As many techniques as possible are carefully detailed to show ornaments, slurs, accents etc.The companion parts available here for big band and strings restores many elements missing in other versions available.  The strings here are restored to the original voicings so  important to the style of the classic sound of the period. The solos are transcribed note for note as played by greats such as Billy Butterfield on Trumpet, Johnny Guarnieri on Piano, Les Robinson on Alto Sax, Jerry Jerome on Tenor Sax, Vernon “Brownie†Brown on Trombone. There is an entire sax riff that was extemporaneously improvised during the session that is missing entirely in other published versions. The instrumentation is also restored to only the instruments that were used in Shaw’s recordings. There are many details that help the ease of performability of the genre and gesture of jazz idiom. Lastly, the intention is that this should be performed with saxophones. However, there are optional parts for clarinets and bassoons that can be used only if saxes are not available. I have performed from this solo part many times and I hope others will do so as well. I give great thanks to several people, who over the course of my career, taught me many skills that resulted in this. This song contains many advanced songwriting techniques and shows a complete mastery of advanced tonal harmony and voice leading. The verses are syllabic and arranged in 8 regular phrases. The last phrase is elided with a contrasting melismatic bridge that suddenly and expectantly modulates to the lowered mediant, causing a foreign chromatic mediant relation. (F major to Ab major). Further drama is evoked by the voice-leading where an ascending leap of a minor 9th signals the beginning of the bridge. The bridge then modulates back to the original key for the refrain, which, like the verses is arranged in 8 regular phrases and elides once again into a final version of the bridge which functions this time as a coda.Â
