The work was premiered in December 2022.I composed this piece using a 5 music notes scale (F to Low Bb), simple rhythmic combinations, an AABA form, unisons, and duet textures. This piece will suit your beginner concert band if you are a band teacher who wants to present a concert with music other than the exercises from the band method. Grade: 0.5.

Published by Anthea John-Phillip (A0.937896). This beginner piece is an excellent choice for a final concert for your first year band. Each section has a soli and will give the listener the opportunity to hear each part of the band play individually. The march-like tempo and style incorporates the first 6 notes of the Bb major scale while keeping simple rhythmic patterns of quarter notes, half notes and whole notes for the wind instruments. The snare drum has sixteenth notes in combination with eighth notes while the bass drum and tambourine have mostly quarter notes and half notes. Two and four bar phrases are used to create a leisurely stroll while Walking to the Park.

Published by John McAllister (A0.1151664). Balloon Parade is a march-like, joyful beginning band tune. It utilizes the first five notes in various combinations and patterns, creating harmonies between the different sections. Each instrument section gets a chance at the melody and melodic-like passages. The brass and woodwinds only have half/quarter notes and rests. Only the percussion (snare, tambourine) has eighth note rhythms. This piece would be a great addition to a first year concert, or just as a learning piece when getting used to playing music with the full ensemble. This piece directly correlates with the Foundation Warm-Up Series #1. This series is designed to follow most beginning band methods. The early sets focus primarily on airflow, common patterns, and reinforcing concepts presented in the method books. As the series develops, the sets become more like a traditional band warm-up, including long tones, flexibility exercises, articulation, scale patterns, and a chorale.

Band On the Green was written for the New Brunswick Public Schools Elementary District Band for their spring performance in the 2012-13 school year. Utilizing the first octave of notes and simple quarter and eighth note rhythms in the winds, along with sixteenth note combinations in the percussion, it still contains the traditional elements and conforms to the standard march form. This is a great piece to teach your young students about the concert march!
