The piece then recaps with God Rest You Merry with a slightly fuller instrumentation and a simple flute obligato line.FEATURES: Melody opportunities for all wind parts; Multiple percussion parts give colorful sound; timpani provide bass ostinato; Students sing ahh on a single note - great for improving intonation!; Soli section in middle will motivate players to learn the part so they get to play the melody (keeps your better players challenged); Low brass parts are very simple.RANGES: C minor (3 flats). And though each sequence doesn’t have specific programmatic connotations, teachers and students should use their imagination as to what the spy protagonist has gotten mixed up in! The form is roughly an A-B-C-A-B-Coda. There is much repetition in repeated sections to not add too much extra material for younger players to learn. There are also a few “Easter eggs†of semi-quotes buried within. Spy Game would be a great programming choice to add some excitement and intrigue to the young band concert!This piece directly correlates with the Foundation Warm-Up Series. This series is designed to follow most beginning band methods. The early sets focus primarily on airflow, common patterns, and reinforcing concepts presented in the method books. As the series develops, the sets become more like a traditional band warm-up, including long tones, flexibility exercises, articulation, scale patterns, and a chorale.

Published by John McAllister (A0.778205). Lawson's Fork March is a straight-forward march for young (1st to 2nd year typically) bands. It would be a great first piece to start learning march style. It has simple, accessible melodies, accompanied by the idiomatic low brass (all in unison) and percussion engine. It starts in the key of Eb and modulates to Ab, however it only uses accidentals and doesn't actually change the key signature. I titled the march after Lawson's Fork Creek which I often stroll alongside. This creek and the trails nearby were a tremendous refuge for me during Covid.

The elements of this piece include dynamic contrasts, varying articulations, and a new time & key signature that is often not seen in first year literature, while maintaining an appropriate range for your students—for reference, the clarinets are under the break, with their highest note being the 3rd line Bb and the lowest being the B-natural below the staff. Processional March is written in 2/4, with the first half of the piece in Eb and the second in Bb. With a tempo marking of Moderato {quarter note = 108}, this march comes in under 3 minutes, making this piece an attainable piece to learn for any upcoming concert. The rhythmic structure of this piece is strict quarter and 8th note rhythms for all wind instruments. The snare drum part also has the same rhythmic structure, but also includes 9-stroke rolls, flams, flam-taps and paired 8th-two 16th rhythms. The percussion section has only four parts–Crash Cymbals, Snare/Bass Drum and Glockenspiel—making this ideal for any sized percussion section.Processional March follows an |:AA:|-B-C form. Throughout the piece, each instrument visits the harmonic structure beneath the melody, as well as playing the melodies featured in the different sections. This two-measure pattern ends differently every other time, creating a four-measure pattern that occurs throughout and never changes! All students (except the shaker) play this pattern at the very beginning, establishing the basis for the entire arrangement.Only six notes are used. Students’ familiarity with the music will be an asset as they tackle a melody that may be a new challenge to them. With this in mind, the melody is always doubled or cued elsewhere; no section will ever have to play it alone. There are four opportunities for either a soloist or a soli of any combination! These occur at bars 21, 25, 49 and 53.  Have fun with these spots, giving everyone an opportunity. It will, of course, need to be mapped out for a performance. Students will shout the Bluey characters’ names just like the show’s theme.
