If I Can't Have You is a classic disco song written by the Bee Gees in 1977; it initially appeared on the multi-platinum 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack in a version by Yvonne Elliman, released in November that year. The Bee Gees' own version appeared a month later as the B-side of Stayin' Alive. Elliman was originally going to perform How Deep Is Your Love, as she was known as a ballad singer, but the Bee Gees' manager, Robin Stigwood, decided to swap things around. Stigwood's decision proved a success as the soundtrack's first single, the Bee Gees' version of How Deep Is Your Love, shot to number one, followed to the top spot by the soundtrack's second and third singles, also by the Gibb brothers, Stayin' Alive and Night Fever. Elliman's If I Can't Have You, produced by disco pioneer Freddie Perren, was released as the fourth single off the 'Saturday Night Fever' album in February 1978. The song was covered by 80's star Kim Wilde in 1993 and charted well in several countries, along with a later version by Jess Glynne in 2016.

Ernest Farrar (1885-1918) was a talented composer, born in London but raised in Yorkshire, who was deprived of a long and storied career by his untimely death during World War I. He enlisted in 1915 and gained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in February 1918. At the suggestion of Charles Villiers Stanford and Ralph Vaughan Williams, he composed 'Heroic Elegy' (op. 36) in 1918 while in service, and conducted its first performance on 3 July 1918 while on leave. Farrar was summoned to France just over two months later and was tragically killed by machine gunfire at the Battle of Ephey Ronssoy later than month. The simple dedication at the top of the score reads To Soldiers, making his final composition even more poignant. A sombre, but somehow joyful piece that wouldn't be out of place in any military or civic memorial event.

It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in March 1962. The song features a prominent riff from well-known harmonica player Delbert McClinton; while touring the UK in 1962 with the Beatles, McClinton gave John Lennon some harmonica tips; Lennon put the lessons to use right away on Love Me Do and later Please Please Me. Lennon included Hey! Baby in his jukebox and a version of the song was recorded by Ringo Starr in 1976. Hey! Baby! was used in the 1987 hit film 'Dirty Dancing' in the scene in which Johnny and Baby dance on top of a log; a dance remix in early 2000 by Austrian artist DJ Ötzi brought it back to prominence again, reaching number 1 in the UK, Irish and Australian charts. This arrangement for concert band has a harmonica part to tie-in with the original, but is beefed up with elements used from a marching band chart by Tom Wallace.

James Edward Ernest Symington #1092231. Published by James Edward Ernest Symington (A0.1518069). The name of the variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Flex-Band has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

Soul Limbo is the seventh studio album by the American R&B band Booker T. & the M.G.'s, released in 1968 on Stax Records. The title track is perhaps best known in the UK as the theme tune for BBC Television's cricket coverage and later for Test Match Special. It features a marimba solo by Terry Manning and cowbell by Isaac Hayes (apparently captured in one successful take!) It references the Trinidadian dance and game The Limbo, which had a surge of popularity in the United States from the mid-1950s onwards. The song makes use of a common chord progression that was featured in such 1950s and 1960s hits as La Bamba, Louie Louie, and Wild Thing and this arrangement includes an open repeat to accommodate several soloists, as well as a separate drum solo spot, as desired.

Always on My Mind was originally conceived as a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James and first recorded by country artist Brenda Lee in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both country and pop categories. Elvis Presley's recording was the first commercially successful version of the song, followed by a 1987 hi-NRG/synth-pop interpretation from Pet Shop Boys (which reached UK number one and made US Top Ten). This version by PSB came about in 1987 as part of an anniversary show called 'Love Me Tender', to mark 10 years since the death of Elvis Presley (who had also charted well with the song) - in November 2004, The Daily Telegraph placed the version at number two in a list of the 50 best cover versions of all time and ten years later, a public poll compiled by the BBC saw the song voted the all-time best cover version. In the context of the show, gambler Nicely-Nicely Johnson invents a dream about being saved from hell in order to bring together the members of the prayer meeting. It was originally performed on stage by Stubby Kaye who later reprised his role as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the 1953 London production, as well as the 1955 film version. One of our favorite songs that he sang was TheFar North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of hermovies. Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell methey recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch'ssong. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes inthe border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada.The original arrangement, for string quartet, was premiered by the OdeonQuartet on October 21, 2003, at Seattle's TownHall.

Van Beethoven adapted the ode in the finale of his ninth symphony by introducing a few new sections, which is the most well known usage of the poem. The flexible instrumentation enables a mixture of instruments, from small ensemble to orchestra. Essential fingerings and bowings are provided in the string parts. Here is a stunningly beautiful example of Renaissance polyphony and a mesmerizing fast-paced recital number. Program this initially to set an exciting mood or as an encore to leave the listeners in a jubilant afterglow. The parts are not tricky, but plan to rehearse the many subtleties of dynamic contrast between the various sub-groups and the overall articulations. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and, indeed, instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and reverberation for maximum effect. Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was the first to indicate them, such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He, therefore, developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He indeed used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Indeed, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, followed by a group response. Sometimes there was probably a third group near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. Because they could be appropriately situated, the instruments could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper can, in contrast, sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets and his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) seem to move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, the instruments are an essential part of the presentation, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – called Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.
