It firstly emerged as a B-side, but later re-released as an A, going on to spend twelve weeks on the UK Singles Chart, including two at No. 1, however failing to make commercial success in the US. The song was written by Sandy Linzer and L. Russell Brown and produced by Linzer, featuring retro (and distinctive) use of disco and siren whistles. A hi-energy cover by the duo Pat and Mick, produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, reached No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart ten years later in 1990, helping to raise funds for the charity 'Help a London Child'. Originally an art song for voice and piano, the piece was later expanded and reworked into a tone poem for violin and large orchestra, becoming one of Saint-Saëns' most famous works.Representation of Death: Danse Macabre was inspired by the French legend that Death plays the fiddle at midnight on Halloween, causing the skeletons in the cemetery to crawl out of their graves for a dance party. The theme of death as the great social equalizer, where no one can escape the dance with death, is depicted in the music and has inspired various paintings and art pieces.Composition and Reception: The piece is in the key of G minor and scored for an obbligato violin and an orchestra of various instruments.  When it was first performed in 1875, Danse Macabre received mixed reviews, with some critics expressing anxiety due to its dissonance, use of a xylophone, and hypnotic repetitions. However, it is now considered one of Saint-Saëns' masterpieces and is widely regarded and reproduced in high and popular culture.

You walk into the darkened room, already anxious in the silence. In the corner, there is a small, wooden cupboard. Creaking in the shadows. Suddenly, the door swings open! And, a mouse crawls out. Hopefully, that is all that was in the cupboard. The completion of this piece has been a long time coming. Initially started as an excuse to use strange percussion instruments and tense chords swells, Haunted Cupboards has evolved into a cheeky polka dance about ghosts. Further, the subtitle notes it as an essay in Harmonic Septphrygian which is a new scale of my own creation. It is simply built by lowering the 2nd and raising the 7th scale degrees, then removing the 5th.Includes a legal-sized score and a letter-sized set of parts.

The single reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. Queen frontman Freddie Mercury contributed harmony vocals to the song, as an uncredited background singer. A 1992 cover version by British dance outfit Undercover was also an international hit. As revealed in his album liner notes, Gold wrote Never Let Her Slip Away about meeting actress and Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman, who was his girlfriend when he composed the song; Dave Grohl of the rock band Foo Fighters called the song the most beautiful piece of music ever written, and maybe one of the most melodically sophisticated songs I've ever heard in my entire life.
